L. A. KIEFER.
FISHING REEL.
(Model) Patented AugQZS, 1881.

NITED STATES PATENT FFICEO LOUIS A. KIEFER, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
FISHING-REEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 246,147, dated August 23, 1881.
Application filed June 16, 188] To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS A. KIEFER, of Indianapolis, in the county of Marion, and in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new andusefulImprovementsinFishing-Reels; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in fishing-reels and it has for its objects to provide for quickly throwing the parts into or out of gear, in order to permit the line to be wound or played out with comparatively little resistance, and also for fastening the reel, when desired, as more fully hereinafter specified. These objects I attain by the mechanism and devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a perspective view ofmy improved reel; and Fig. 2 a side elevation with the inclosing-cap removed, showing the working parts; and Fig. 3 represents a sectional view of the reel. 7
The letter A indicates the reel-frame, and B the reel, which are constructed in the ordinary manner.
The letter 0 indicates a cap secured to. one of the heads of the reel, for the purpose of protecting the working parts.
The letter D indicates a pinion mounted on one end of the reel-shaft.
E indicates a cog-wheel adapted to engage said pinion. The cog-wheel is mounted on an arbor, I secured to the head. The said cogwheel has secured to it a pinion, G, which engages a cog-wheel, H, which is mounted on a hollow sleeve, I, extending through an aperture in the cap, and provided with a winch, K. The arborF is secured to a movable plate, M, which is pivoted to the arbor N, upon which (ModeL) the hollow shaft of the cog-wheel H is mounted in such manner that the said wheel E may be thrown into or out of gear with the pinion D. The rear end of the plate M has bearingagainst it a spring, N, which holds it in a normal position.
The letter P indicates a lever, fulerumed at R to the head L of the frame. The said lever extends through an opening in the side of the cap, so that it can be manipulated to throw the cog-wheel E out of gear with the pinion D, and thus permit the reel to rotate freely to pay out the line.
The letter S indicates a flat spring secured to the head. Said spring is provided with a pin, T, which projects through an opening in the head, and is adapted to engage an aperture in one flange of the reel to holdit.
Uindicates a lever extending through an opening, V, in the cap, the said lever operating to lift the spring and release the reel when its inner end is brought under the free end of the spring.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with the reel and its frame the pinion D on the reel-shaft, the cog-wheel E, and pinion Gr, mounted on the arbor F on the plate M, the cog-wheel H and. its hollow sleeve and winch, and lever P, the spring S, provided with a projection adapted to engage an aperture in the flange ot' the reel, and the lever U, all arranged to operate substantially as specified.
In testimony whereofI affix my signature, in I presence of two witnesses, this 6th day ofJune, 1881.
LOUIS A. KIEFER. Witnesses:
A. G. Hown, JOSEPH W. WALKER.
