Description

1949. F'. w. SCHMIEDEBERG I 2,460,906
PACKAGE HOLDER Filed Aug. 50, 1946 //\/A/E/\/ TU FEEDRICK W- SCHMlEDtbERGz Maw M fl TTUR/VE W5 Patented Feb. 8, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE I 2,460,906 I I l PACKAGEHOLLDEB, Fredrick W. Schmiedeberg, Portland, Oreg. Application August 30, 19i6, Serial No. 694,046
2 Claims. (Cl. 248-311) This invention relates to a package holder and i v has particular reference to a holder for a box of disposable tissue and the like.
The general object of the present invention is to provide a holder suitable for a box of dispos- 1 able tissue which will hold the box in an accessible position on a wall surface in a house or in an automobile with one side of the box exposed in such manner that the tissue may easily be withdrawn therefrom. The present holder is especially designed to receive disposable tissue boxes of the type having a longitudinal slit in the middle of the box top for drawing tissue therefrom one sheet at a time, the sheets being interfolded within the box to project a portion of the next sheet each time one sheet is removed.
It is, therefore, afurther object of the invention to provide a holder to support such a box of tissue on its side with the tissue dispensing slot freely exposed on the front side thereof and unobstructed by the support." Another object is to provide a tissue box holder which is of simple, inexpensive construction, neat in appearance, and which will grip a tissue box withsufi icient firmness and rigidity to be suitable for automobile use and to permit tissue to be drawn there from in the manner described without dislodging the box from the holder when a pull is exerted on a piece of tissue. Another object is to provide a holder which will firmly grip a tissue boxbut from which the box may readily be released for replacement without difiicu1ty."A still'further object is to provide a holder of the type described having novel hanger elements adapted to hang either on hooks or'screws or through holes or over the edge of a vertical flange or sheet.
With these and other objects in view, the present holder comprises a single resilient piece of plastic material or wire having supporting hooks formed in the ends thereof, and having various bends and convolutions formed therein for embracing a tissue box and the like-firmly on the back, front, ends and bottom thereof without obstructing the tissue dispensing slot therein.
The box is thereby gripped securely on five of'its sides to hold it against dislodgment from jostling movements and from the pull exerted thereon each time a piece of tissue is removed therefrom, but with sufficient, resilience to permit the easy removal and replacement of the box when empty.
The exact nature of the device and the details of its construction will be more readily understood with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: 1
Figure 1 is aperspective view of a preferred embodiment of holder formed according to the principles of the present invention and showing in phantom a disposable tissue box supported therein;
Figure 2 is a rear view of the device in perspective with the box shown in full lines and with portions of an automobile body included to show the manner of hanging the device therein; and Figure 3 is a front elevation view showing the approximate shape assumed by the holder in relaxed condition after a box has been removed therefrom. I The numeral l0 designates a tissue box having a longitudinal slit II extending substantially the length of the box in the middle of one side for dispensing individual sheets of tissue 12. The holder for the box is formed from a single piece of flexible wire or plastic material having an eye IS in each end thereof adapted to hang on a screw or hook received-through the loop of the eye and also adapted to hang as a hook over the top edge of an upstanding sheet such as the sheet M in Figure 2. The sheet M in the present illus- I tration is intended to represent a stiff vertical modern automobiles extending from the fioor up the front or side walls in front of the drivers seat and beneath the cowl. The numeral l5 may represent either the underside of the cowl, or glove compartment built into the cowl. If the sheet l4 does not have an exposed upper edge as shown, small slits or holes may be cut therein to receive therethrough the extreme ends of the strip material forming the eyes l3. These extremities [5 are each twisted rearwardly outof the general plane of the eye to form effective supporting hooks which may eitherbe projected through openings in the sheet or hung across the upper edge of the sheet in the manner described. I
From each of the eyes IS the strip is formed to extend straight down behind the box in a vertical reach IE to a right angular corner I! from which it then extends horizontally along the rear side of the box to the rear corner I9. Between the rear and front corners l9 and 2| a side portion 20- extendsalong the end of the box just below mid height, and from the corner 2! the strip curves downwardly at 22 just beneath the slit II and across the front side of the box to a lower corner 23. .From the corner 23 the strip edge of the box so that the two portions 24 and the two portions 26, together with the two angular portions 25 and the angle point 27, form a W in a horizontal plane to provide bottom sup.- port for the box.
The holder is made to assume approximately the shape shown in Figure 3 whereby the resilient spring action throughout the length of the strip tends'to bring the upright portions I6 and the eyes 13 on "the two ends substantially together. In order to insert a box-in the holder the sides" 20 are sprung outwardly as shown in Figure 1 to cause the arms [6 to separate and assume approximately vertical positions with the eyes A3 spaced substantially as shown to provide relatively 4 ity where these qualities are needed so as to result in an efiicient and inexpensive holder which is relatively easier to manufacture than conventional holders for such purposes. The strip material of which the holder is formed may be of any available cross sectional shape, a circular cross section being preferred for wire and either a square or flat rectangular cross section being preferred in plastic material. There are no welds or aiitaohmen'ts to work loose from vibration, and if plastic material is used there is'no painting or enameling required to protect against rust.
"The device is capable of various changes and all 'suchmodifications within the scope of the apdistantly spaced points of supportaiorrthe ih'dlder and box. The spring action of v the material, thereby resiliently grips the ends of the "box and exerts suflicient frictional force thereon tto-pre vent the box from jostling out of the holder when the latter is installed .in an automobile and -to prevent .the box from becoming dislodged -.0r twisted in the holder when sheets of tissue lar. pulled through the slit ll,
.It. will be observed that the corners 2-l .andwthe front portions :22 are disposed immediately below andwcloselyadiacentthe ends of the slit Ll where the greatest resistance-is usually encountered in withdrawing sheets :of tissue through the slit.
Thus; the drontsupportfurnished by portionsZZ immediately adjacent these. points of. resistance acting in conjunction with the gripping effects exerted bythe =endportions-l2fl, and the bracing efiectof the back portions, tend .to hold the box firmly and. prevent it from tilting in the Jnolder if a tissueis =di-flieult .to withdraw fromthelbox. Since thevarious portions of the .holder .substantially encompass fiversides of the box, unintentional movement the holder is effectively preventedeven though. the holder bemade of Jightand fiexiblematerial. The proximityof the upper part .of portions 22 .and the angles .21 to the. ends .of the-slit H also holds inthefront wall .of vthe hox beneath theslit to prevent the box fromryieldingflto its normal tendency to tear at these points, the holder thereby .serv'ingas a reintorce nent for the .box rat its weakest points.
Thebox .is easily removed fromv the holder by pressing down .onthe-end portions 120 with the thumbs and pressing up onthabottomof the .box
with the .fingers,if there'is sufficient :free space aboye theholden .;If a cowling or. glove compartment, [5 prevents. the raising of the box in this manner, the holder and'box togetherrmay "readily be liftedaway from the supporting sheet ,jin which case only suflicient upward movement is required tol'ree the ends l5 from the sheet '18.
In such case the holder is easilyreplaced with anew box therein by merely extending the thumbs over or alongside the eyes l3tof1ocate the top edge of the sheet I4 orthe holes therein through which the ends I5 are to be extended.
It will be observed that the improved supporting'actlon of the present holder is attained by the novel shaping and forming ofrajsingle strip of "flexible material toprovide 'stifinessand rigidpended claims are included in the invention. Having now described my invention and in whatmanner the same may be used, what I claim as new and desireto protect by Letters Patent is:
ll. iAIhdlder for a tissue box and the like having a horizontal tissue withdrawal opening extending across :a vertical side thereof, comprising- :a single stripof (resilient material formed to snuglyengage five sides of said box, saidmstrip havingaa mid portion extending transversely and longitudinally inla horizontal .plane to form .a bottom support embracing a substantial area of 'the bottom of said box, portionsof said strip extending upwardly and laterallyfrom said bottom support to embrace and confine the front of said box adiacentthe endsofsaidopening, portions of said strip extending across the ends of said-box at approximately mid height and thence laterally towamdaeach other across the back side of said box,'said .last named portions being formed to spring together bythe resilience of said bottom support to [grip the ends of said box, straight verticalends on said last named (portions extending upwardly acrossithe :back side 'of said box, and-deformedeyes constituting hooks inthe ends of saidstrip for suspending said holder, said-single strip of material constituting the sole supporting andcon-fining member in said holder.
2. Apackage' holder formed in .itsientirety from a single-striprof flexible material, saidstrip ihaving unrestrained vertical end portions extending upwandly on the back side :of said holder and tarminating in hanger ends, said strip .havingunrd strained portions in immediate continuation of said end portions constituting ends for said holder, and said strip having a mid portionextending transversely and longitudinally across the bottom-of said holder in continuation of'the portion-s forming the ends of the holder and exerting a spring action on said unrestrained portions to pull said unrestrained portions inwardly to grip the ends of a package in said holder.
