To all whom it may concern Be'it known that L'THoMAs BRODERIOK, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improv-ementsin Combined U01- lar and Hames; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which itappert-ains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective of the metallic twopart frame in open position. Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the tug-hooks. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of one side at the hamering. Fig. 4c is a detail. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section of the lower ends of the two parts of the combined collar and hames. Fig. 6 is a modification of Fig. 2.
This invention relates to a combined horseeollar and hames; and it consists in the con-' struction and combinationofpartssubstantially as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Instead of a separate collar and detachable hames, I propose to give the hames such form as to serve as a basis for the construction and attachment of the rolls or pads of the collar, andforconnectingandlocatingthehame-rings, tug-hooks, and other parts.
In the drawings, A B designate the two halves of the skeleton frame-work. Parts A and B are metallic, preferably of malleable cast-iron, and each flat, and in the general shape of a horse-collar, as shown. Each part is skeleton, having the web a for bracing the hams-rings 1), whose shanks pass through holes 0 therein, and webs d to brace the tug-hooks e, which are attached by means of the bolts f, whose shanks pass through holes i in webs d, as shown.
Parts A B are connected together at their tops by the lugs 75, perforated for a pintle, l, which also fastens the small housing m, covering the joint. Part A, at its lower end, is
made in the form of the hook-bolt n or catch- Part B, on the upper side of its lower end, is fitted with the hook-shaped keeper 0, which is pivoted, as shown, and held normally closed by the spring 8. Keeper 0 is pivoted strongly to the end of part B, and is protected by the semicircular socket-casting O, which is bolted or at both ends for the entrance of the lower tips of the rolls or pads D. (Shown in Fig. 2 by the dotted lines.) 7
Both parts A and B have the flange or bead p on one or both edges, as shown at Fig. 2, for the purpose of more certainly securing the leather covering, which is drawn over the frame and held by stitching inside, and the beads 12 also'act to prevent displacement of the pads.
The rolls or pads D are built on a base of strong leather, which is padded inside with suitable material, and covered with leather, as usual. At points in the base leather t corresponding to the holes 0 and t in webs a, and d are located metallic flanged nuts 12, which, for more stability, may be riveted to the leather bases t. The rollsD are placed in position on the inside of their respective frames A B, the hame-rings b are placed with their shanks through holes 0 of webs a, after which the rings 1) are screwed home in nuts o, thus drawing the rolls D tightly against the frames A B at their upper portions. The lower portions are secured by the boltsf, which pass through the tug-hooks c and holes 0 in webs d, and are screwed home in nuts 0;, as before.
When the device is to be placed on the horse the hook-bolt n is released from engagement with the keeper 0 by pressing aside the keeper 0 by means of a stud, 00, on the latter, which projects through a slot in the bottom of frame B. Then the parts A andB are opened till they can pass down over the horses neck, and when in position they are pushed together. In doing this the keeper 0 yields to the hook-bolt n, and when it has passed the keeper 0 springs back and securely holds the parts A B together.
To adapt the collar for single or double harness, I have the opening or slot w in thelower part of web (1 of frame A, and into this I insert the curved end of a hook,y, in which the polestrap ring 2 is inserted previous to setting hook y in place. Hook 3 has a long nose, which, when partsA and B are closed together, passes inside the socket in frame B, thus being held securely.
The frames A B are very light, but the curved form and the webs beaded edges give them abundant strength for all purposes. The colfastened to the frame B, and is open-mouthed lar and hames thus become one substantial structure, whereby much trouble is avoided in hitching up and unhitching, for the collar and hames may be removed along with the rest of thebody-harness'by simply releasing the lower ends by means of the thumb knob or stud m.
For heavy hauling the frames A and B may be each cast solid, instead of being webbed only at two points, as shown above. In this case it would not be necessary to fit a glazedleather cover to the frames, as they could then be japanned or otherwise ornamented; but the construction and manner of attaching the pads, hame-rings, 850., would be the same as before described.
The casting G will be secured by bolts or screws passing up through the lower end of frame B.
Instead of the form of tug-hooks shown in Fig. 2, Ihave that shown by Fig. 6, in which the hooks e are recessed at their rear ends for the reception of the trace T, and the rear bolt, Q), passes through the trace, as shown, thus holding the trace securely, and saving the expense of the usual clips used in this part of ordinary harness.
I claim as my invention 1. The combined collar and hames consisting of the hinged frames A B, having flange-s p, in combination with rolls or pads D, secured thereto, substantially as described.
2. The combination of frame A, having web a and flange p, with pad D, nut c, and screwshanked ring 12, substantially as described.
3. The combination of frame A, having web cl and flange 19, tug-hook 6, nuts 12 'v, and bolts f, substantially as shown.
4. The combination of frame A, having hook n, with frame B, having the pivoted spring-retracted keeper 0, and socket O, substantially as specified.
5. The combination of frames A B, having lugs k, with housing on, having a similar lug, and pin Z, substantially as set forth.
6. The combination of frame A, slotted at w, pole-strap hook y, ring 2, and frame B, substantially as described.
