JOSEPH BRUNETH A TTOENEY Patenteci Feb. 1, 1949 MOLDED PLASTIC CONTAINER HAVING HINGED COVER Joseph Brunetti, Carlstadt, N. J., assignor to Columbia Protektosite Company, Inc., Carlstadt, N. J a corporation of New Jersey Application May 6, 1948, Serial No. 25,452
4 Claims. (Cl. 220-31) This invention relates to portable cosmetic accessory devices and more particularly is directed to improved cover fitted boxes or receptacles of a size to fit into a pocket or handbag for holding face powder, powder pufis or the like.
Among the objects of the invention is to generally improve devices of the character described, which shall comprise few and simple parts that are readily assembled to form a rugged, neat appearing structure having swingable cover closure, which shall be lightweight yet adapted to withstand rough usage, such as frequent opening and closing of said cover closure;
which shall be relatively cheap to manufacture, which hall provide a tight powder leakproof box or receptacle that is easily opened and closed, and which shall be practical and efiicient to a high degree in use.
Other objects of the invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists of features of construction, combination of elements and arrangements of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter disclosed, the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the claims following.
In the accompanying drawing in which one embodiment of the invention is shown,
Fig. 1 is a cross sectional view taken centrally through a closed pocket or handbag size of powder and puff cosmetic box constructed to embody the invention showing details of the improved cover hinge and snap latching means.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the improved cosmetic box shown in Fig. 1 with the cover in side open position.
Figs. 3 and 4 are rear and side elevational views, respectively, of the improved cosmetic box shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary cross sectional view showing details of the hinge construction taken on line 55 in Fig. 1, and
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary cross sectional viewholder portion i I provided with a swingable cover closure I2 which as shown in Fig. 2 is circular shaped; Said cover closure I2 may be relatively shallow with respect to the receiver portion II and as shown in Fig. 1 is proportioned to have a depth of about one-half that of the receiver portion. The receiver or holder portion ll may be formed with a circular fiat bottom side l'la which has upstanding therefrom a peripheral wall ilb which terminates in a plane parallel to said bottom side I la and is provided with a rim, cutback or rabbet ilc. On a front side of receiver ll midway between said rabbet ilc and the bottom -of side wall llb, an integrally formed protuberance ll d may be provided. Diagonally opposite said protuberance lid, said wall l'lb may have integrally formed therewith an outwardly projecting hinge anchoring box-like structure He. The latter may be made hollow as at III with parallelly spaced apart walls Hg, having aligned outwardly extending pivoting bosses llh, positioned a substantial distance from said rib rabbet ilc and said peripheral wall I lb toward the bottom side I la as seen in Fig. 1.
Cover closure l2 may be formed with an arched top and peripheral flange i2g having a rim rabbet or reverse cut back l2a corresponding to and cooperating with "eceiver rim rabbet 0 to provide a tight peripheral closure between receiver portion II and cover closure l2. Said cover closure i2 may be integrally formed with a snap lockingtab extension l2b having a recess l2c positioned to receive and to yieldably interlock with said protuberance lid, as is clear from Figs. 1 and 4'.
Diametrically opposite said tab I'Zb and integrally formed with said cover closure i2, there is provided a yoke shaped hinge portion |2d formed with an intermediate top cross extension l2h and parallelly spaced apart side members We positioned to nearly fit against said walls Hg. Said members We are provided with aligned openings I2, positioned to receive bosses llh and forming swingable attachment means for the cover closure It on receiver portion II as is clear from Figs. 1 to 5. Members l2e are of sufilcient peripheral length between the flange l2g of cover portion I: and opening I2 to provide material capable of a slight stretch so that when recess I20 of locking tab l2b is snapped over protuberance lid the cover closure is clamped in closed position.
Anchoring structure ll e may be made with a cross bracing wall Hy provided in the plane of bottom side Ila as shown in Figs. 1 to 5. The
intermediate top cross extension I271. is'formed so as to cover anchoring structure I Ie, as is clear from Figs; 1, 3 and and for serving as a stop means for limiting the swing of the cover closure I2 in full open position as shown in Fig. 2.
Fig. 6 shows a modified form of the invention having identical parts, such as receiver portion H I, cover closure II2, yoke shaped hinge portion II2d, openings H21, cavity III and bosses III]: to those in the form inFigs. 1 to 5 except the cross bracing wall III which is provided in the plane of the rabbet He thus leaving the cavity I'IIf open at the bottom and closed at the top thereby preventing the face powder from entering the anchoring box I2e.
After constructing the parts of thereceptacle III as described above the cover closure I2 is hinged to the receiver portion II in the assembly by inserting the anchoring structure Ile between the members In of the yoke portion I2d. Said members I2e may then be flexed to spread the ends thereof for fitting over the bosses I In which when released snap in place forming a hinged interconnection for trunnioning the cover closure I2 on receiver portion I I as is clear from Figs. 2, 3 and 4.
To close the box ID, the cover closure I2 is trunnioned on the hinge construction above described until said rabbets lie and In are interfitted and the tab I2b is forced over the protuberance I Id and the latter is seated in the recess I2c.
In assuming this closed position the tab resiliency locks the cover closure I2 to the receiver portion II and due to the leverage of yoke members I2e and the position of protuberance IId said members I2e are placed under tension because of their size, shape and position thereby placing the entire cover closure in clamped position on the receiver portion I I when the relatively rigid tab I2!) is in locked position as is clear from Figs. 1 and 4.
It will thus be seen that there is provided an improved cover fitted receptacle or box whereby the several objects of this invention are achieved and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiments above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawings is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
