Description

Feb. 1, 1949. J. T. MILLER GLASS SETTING DEVICE Filed June 22, 1944 INVENTOR. 6%71626? 77%17 Patented Feb. 1, 1 949 guess SETTING ni vIcE James T.-'Miller, Niles, Mich., assignor to The Kaw ieer .Go'mpany, Niles, Mich, a corporation f Mi hi n The present invention relates to a novel setting device for a pane of glass for holding this glass in a window opening or store front, and especially to a novelmeans and mechanism for ,adiustably mounting the 'facemoulding or'oute'r sash mem ber in position for holding the glass.
"Among the objects of the present invention to provide a novel sash assembly in which the outer sash member or face moulding is adjustably mounted by locking mechanism actuated and controlled from the interior of the window or store front. This adjustable locking mechanism permits variation in the thickness of the pane of lass to be mounted and a quick replacement of the glass when that becomes necessary.
Another object of the present invention is to providea novel retention means for a glass holding device in which the edges of the glass are held between a pair of sash members, one of which is fixed and the other drawn into contact or engagement with the glass whereby these edges are 2 Claims. (Cl. 20 56.4)
held firmly, yet with sufficient resiliency as to prevent the pane from splitting or cracking when subjected to vibrations and pressure from external sources.
Further objects are to provide a construction of maximum simplicity, efiiciency, economy and ease of assembly and operation, and such further objects, advantages and capabilities as will later more fully appear and are inherently possessed thereby.
The invention further resides in the construe tion, combination and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and while there is shown therein a preferred embodiment, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of 'modification and change, and comprehends other details, arrangements of parts, features and constructions without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary view in perspective of the novel sash assembly.
Figure 2 is a view in vertical cross section through the assembly. 7
Figure 3 is a top plan View of the clip or bracket.
Figure 4 is a view in front elevation of the clip or bracket and Figure 5 is a view in side or end elevation thereof.
Referring now more in detail to the disclosure in the drawings, the embodiment therein selected to illustrate the invention is shown in a window construction or store front comprising a sash assembly including a face moulding l and gutter 2, the latter being suitably connected to a jamb section 3 and the face moulding and gutter forming inner and outer sash members for holdin pane of glass 4 in'the desired position with'the lower edge of the glass resting upon a cushion 'ii mounted in a dovetailed slot in the upper surface of asetting block 6. Projecting from "the'rear of this setting block is a flange "I provided with "a turned down leg '8 fitting intoa groove aprons"- ed inabase it of a gutter's'ection. i
Lugs II are suitably spaced apart and carried within the face moulding with the upper edge I2 .01 the lug seating against a flange or lip l3 and a lower edge M mounted within the longitudinally extending groove 15 of the face moulding and therein staked to prevent the lugs from slipping. By this construction and arrangement each lug II is held accurately spaced and interlocked at its upper and lower edge with the upper and lower edge of the face moulding.
Each lug is provided with a rearwardly extending leg l6 provided with a downwardly extending rib I'I adapted to seat upon the base I of the gutter and an upwardly inclined wedge surface or cam face l8 adapted to be engaged by a screw I 9 carried in aclinch nut '20 in spaced, resilient clips or brackets 2!. Each clip or bracket is resiliently retained within the gutter 2 by having its lower edge 22 seating within the channel or recess 9 and its upper inclined leg 23 snapped into the gutter and held between the rear surface thereof and the flange or lip 24 adapted to engage the inner surface of an edge of the pane of glass 4. In order to hold the face moulding down'into contact with the jamb sections, the base In of the gutter is provided with an embossed loop 25 adapted to receive a projection or foot 26 seating against the jamb section 3.
As the screw I9 is turned down against the wedge or inclined face I8 of the lug H, the face moulding I is retracted or pulled in against the glass and down against the gutter and thereby retained'in adjusted position. Due to such adjustment, the holding device accommodates itself to variations in the glass thickness and permits easy replacement of the glass or face moulding by merely unscrewing the screw H) which allows withdrawal of the face moulding and lugs.
Having thus disclosed my invention, I claim:
1. A glass setting device for a window, store front and the like having an encompassing frame, comprising a gutter member provided with a glass engaging lip at its upper edge and a base having a longitudinally extending recess and spaced embossed loops, a face moulding adjustably and removably mounted with respect to the gutte member and provided with a glass engaging lip at its upper edge and a longitudinally extending groove at its lower edge, a plurality of lugs mounted in spaced relation in the face moulding and having an edge bearing against the glass engaging lip and another edge seating within the longitudinally extending groove, resilient brackets located within the gutter in alignment with the lugs and having an edge adapted to be anchored in the longitudinally extending recess in the baseand an edge bearing against the glass engaging lip of the gutter, a rearwardly extending leg on each of said lugs, each provided with a downwardly extending rib adapted to seat upon the base of the gutter member and an upwardly and inwardly inclined cam face, a projection on each lug adapted to be received within a loop in the base for holding the face moulding down into contact with an encompassing frame, and a screw carried by each resilient bracket and adjustable from the rear of the glass having its end seating against the cam face on the lugs for drawing the lugs and face moulding into glass holding position.
2. In a glass setting device mounted within an encompassing frame, a gutter section secured upon the frame, a face moulding removably and adjustably mounted upon the frame, and means for adjustably and detachably connecting the face moulding to the gutter section and comprising, extruded lugs secured to the face moulding in spaced relation, resilient brackets snapped into the gutter in spaced and aligned relation with the lugs, a projection on each lug and spaced embossed loops in the base of the gutter section for receiving the projections and thereby holding theface moulding against the frame, an inclined part on each lug adapted to provide a cam surface and an adjusting screw carried by each resilient bracket adapted to engage the cam surface in such manner as to retract the lug and face moulding into adjustable glass holding re lation when it is screwed down and to release the lug andface moulding for disassembly or replacement of the glass when the screw is retracted sufficiently to release the lug.
