mesne assignments, to Arbee Products Company, Kansas City, Kans.,a firm composed of David M. Lorenz and Bernhard W. Alden Application mam, 1945, Serial No. 624,837
2Claims. (o1. zis ss) This invention relates to bag supports in general and particularly means for holding bags adapted to receive refuse such as kitchen garbage and the primary aim is to provide simple, inexpensive, rugged and effective equipment for mounting a refuse bag so that it may be conveniently opened and closed through a minimum number of operating parts.
This invention has for one of its salient aims the provision of a refuse bag support having a pair of jaws arranged to engage opposed stretches of the bag at the mouth thereof and simple structure for supporting the jaws for movement to and from a closed position where the mouth of the bag is maintained tightly closed to eliminate the escape of odors and to prevent the entrance of flies, gnats or other animal life that maybe attracted by the contents of the bag.
Further aims of the invention will appear during the course of the following specification referring to the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a top plan View of a refuse bag holder showing the same in a condensed condition to illustrate in detail the mechanism at each end of the sack engaging jaws.
Fig. 2 is a transverse cross sectional view taken on line II-II of Fig. 1 with the jaws in a closed position.
Fig. 3 is a similar cross sectional view illustrat ing the jaws in an open condition or at one end of their path of travel, and
Fig. 4 is a front elevational view of the refuse bag holder with the jaws in a closed position.
The form of bag holder chosen for illustration embodies the broad features of my invention and the numeral I designates a bracket, substantially U-shaped in form and having a base plate I2 through the medium whereof the entire assembly may be mounted upon a supporting wall. Laterally projecting legs I l form a part of bracket I0 and each mounts a pair of arms I6 and I8 respectively. These arms are arcuate and practically L-shaped and the means for attachment to the legs I4 are rivets about which the respective arms oscillate. The free ends of the lowermost stretches of arms I6 and I8 are developed into gear segments 22 and 24 respectively and these gear segments are in mesh, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
The arms I6 and I8 are formed of sheet material and lie in the same plane immediately adjacent to the inner face of the supporting legs It. The opposite free ends of each of the arms I6 and I8 carry jaws 26 of like character in that each jaw comprises a strip 28 rigid to the arms I6 and I8 as the case may be and a swingable clamp 30 designed to grip a portion of the bag at the mouth thereof. These clamps 30 are U- shaped in transverse cross section and straddle strips 28, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
A handle 32 mounted on one of strips 28 near its medial line affords a grip for the operator and when outward force is imparted to this handle, .opposed arms I6 carrying one strip 28 will be drawn toward the open side of bracket I0 and due to the intermeshing of gears 22 and 24 at each end of the assembly, the opposite arms I8 will be moved about their. pivotal points of support toward the open position.
A spring 34 having one end anchored to arm I8 and its opposite end anchored to bracket III, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3, serves to yieldably maintain the pairs of arms I6 and I8 in either the completely closed condition, as shown in Fig. 2, or the open position, as illustrated in Fig. 3. The past center action of spring 34 is rendered clear in these Figs. 2 and 3 and it is also apparent from an observation of Fig. 3 that arm I8 is limited in its movement toward the open position by a pin 9 on bracket I0.
When the arms are closed, clamps 30 are in juxtaposition and parallelism to form a closed mouth for the bag. The bag depends from jaws 28 and its flexibility permits unrestricted movement of the parts as above described. Simultaneous movement of arms I E and I8 is always insured because of gears 22 and 24.
Simplicity of structure and positive action is the result of utilizing the assembly just described and since slight modifications as to structural details might be made it is desired to be limited only by the spirit of the invention and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A refuse bag holder comprising a support; a pair of jaws each having means for holding a bag along opposite portions of the mouth thereof; a pair of arms at each end of the pair of jaws, there being an arm to mount each jaw in operative position; said arms each being separately, pivotally mounted on one face of the support, said arms being substantially L-shaped and each provided with a gear at the free end of the base leg thereof, said gear of each pair being in mesh to insure simultaneous movement of the arms about their pivotal connections when the jaws are shifted toward and from each other to close and open the bag held thereby; and a spring interconnecting one of these arms and said support for yieldably holding thearms in either the open or closed position.
2. A refuse bag holder comprising a support; a pair of jaws each having means for holding a bag along opposite portions of the mouth thereof; a pair of arms at each end of the pair of jaws, there being an arm to mount each 'jawin -op'erative position; said arms each being separately, pivotally mounted on one face of the support,
said arms being substantially L-shaped and each provided with a gear at the free end of 'thebas'e leg thereof, said gear of each pair 'being imme'sh to insure simultaneous movement of the arms abouttheir pivotal connectionswhen the jaws are shifted toward and from each other 'to close and open the bag held thereby, one-of the arms hatfing a spring for yieldably holding the arm in either the open or closed position; and a pin on said one REFERENCES CITED The following references are of record in the file of this patent:
