UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALMAN D. WASHBURN, OF OCON'IO, WISCONSIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 245,986, dated August 23, 1881.
Application filed May 20, 1881.
' To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, A. DELoss WAsHBURN, of Oconto, in the county ot' Oconto and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bob-Sleighs; and I do hereby declare that the following is ai'ull, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form apart of this specification.
Figure l is a plan view. Fig. 2 is a side View. Fig. 3 is a longitudinalsectional view. Fig. 4t is a vertical cross-section through one ot' the bobs; and Fig. 5 is a detail view, in perspective, of the tongue-holding device.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention has reference to'bob-sleighs, such as are used especially for hauling logs; and. it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A A represent the bobs, which consist each of a pair ot' runners, B B, connected by cross-bars G C, supporting the platform or sand-hoardD. The
cross-bars C C are also connected by binders F F are the bolsters, which are pivoted centrally upon the sand-boards D by the kingbolts Gr. The adjoining sides of the holsters are provided with staples H, connected by a strong hooked metallic rod, I, and the ends of the bolsters are connected by the side bars, J.
The runners B B, it will be observed, are beveled at both ends, so that the sleigh may be drawn equally well in either direction, and the inner or adjoining ends of the runners are connected by diagonal rods K K, crossing each other, as shown. The said rods are connected to the runners by means of rings or links L, adjusted in staples IVI, thus forming loose joints, which will permit the said rods to work freely. The shoes N of the runners are triangular or V-shaped in cross-section, this being in order to cut or form a track for the (Model.)
sleigh, out of which the shoe will not jump, thus preventing the sleigh from sloughingi The sand-boards VD are provided attheir outer ends with recesses O, for the reception of the tongue P, which is adjustable at either end of the sleigh. Gross-bars Q R are secured upon the upper and under sides ot the sandboards, across the inner and outer ends of the recesses O, respectively, in order to retain the tongue in an approximately horizontal position, and the upper side ot' the tongue is provided with a cross-piece, S, which will rest, as shown, upon the sand-board and assist in retaining it in position.
The upper side of the tongue is provided with a staple, T, to which is secured a hook, U, for the attachment ot' the whiftletree and a link, V, which latter is to be adjusted overa hook, W, pivoted upon the sand-board, to which the draft is in this manner connected.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood.
The sleigh is especiallyintended for hauling logs, and the advantage ot' being able to attach the draft at either end, thus avoiding turning the sleigh, will he appreciated by -all lumbermen.
The tongue-coupling is exceedingly convenient, and enables the tongue to be adjusted or shifted in a moments time.
The draft, it will be observed, is direct from the sand-board and king-bolt, thus throwing the strain upon the stout metallic rod I, connecting the holsters, and avoiding unnecessary strain upon the runners.
In turning corners the runners of the front and rear bobs are turned simultaneously by the diagonal connecting-rods, thus facilitating the turning of sharp corners. The advantage of the triangular or V-shaped shoes has been already described.
Having thus described my invention,Iclaim and desire to'secure by Letters Patent of the United Statesl. The bobs A, consisting ofrunners B, crossbars C, sand-boards or platforms D, and bolsters F, pivoted centrally upon the latter by In testimony that I claim the foregoing as 1o the king-bolts G, as herein described, for the my own I have hereto affixed my signature in purpose set forth.' presence of two witnesses.
2. The combination, in a. reversible bob- Y sleigh, of the sand-boards D, having recesses ALMAN DELOSS WASHBURN.
O, cross-bars Q R, and pivoted hook W, ofthe tongue l?, having cross-piece S, staple T, hook Witnesses U, and link V, as herein described, for the pur- W. B. MITCHELL, pose set forth. l H. L. SoRENsEN.
