Description

(No Model.)
RPELTON. GAR 'GOUPLING- No. 245,973. fmt-ema Aug. 23.1881v UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
PHINEAS PELTON, OF MARTELLE, IOWA.
cAR-oouPLlNe.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 245,973, dated August 23, 1881.
Application led J une 18, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, PHINEAs PELToN, of Martelle, in the county of Jones and State of Iowa, haveinvented certain new and usefulImprovements in Car-Couplings; and I do hereby declarethat the following' isa full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had totheaccompanyingdrawings, which form a part of this speciiication.
Figure 1 is a perspective view, Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view, and Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section, of one of the draw-heads.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
Thisinvention relates to automatie'car-couplings; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which'will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the dra-wings hereto annexed, A A represent the draw-hernie, which are each provided with a horizontal recess, B, for the reception of the coupling-link, a vertical perforation, C, being provided to receive the coupling-pin D, in the fashion ot the ordinary pin-and-link coupling. The front end of the draw-head is provided on each side with a vertical slot or mortise, denoted, respectively, by the letters EF. In theformerispivotedasuitably-shaped coupling-hook, G, and the latter is provided with a beveled front, H, to permit the said slotor mortise to engage the coupling-hook of the opposite draw-head.
It will be observed that the formation ofthe vertical slots E F leaves a central raised portion, F', and a side raised wall, E', between which the coupling-hook is pivoted. Also, that the pivoted portion of the coupling-hook inside the slot is provided with an elbow, a, which, by bearing against the front wall, B', of the slot lessens the draft on the pivot-bolt.
The ends or noses I of the coupling-hooks are folded back, as shown, so as to form eyes J, in which the chains, ropes, rods, or other devices used to elevate the hooks in the act of uncoupling may be secured.
From the foregoingdescription, takenin connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and ad vanta ges of my invention will be readily understood.
The construction of my improved car-coupling is simple and durable. inexpensive, and easily applied and operated.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. As an improvement in car-couplings, the combination, with the draw-liead A, constructed substantially as described, having the centrai longitudinal mouth or opening, B, through which passes the vertical central circular opening, O, and provided with two vertical slots, E F, passing entirely through the draw-head from top to bottom, one on each side of said horizontal mouth, leaving a wall between said slots and mouth, and a strong front wall, B', extending from top to bottom, and forming central raised portion, F', and side raised wall, E', between which is pivoted the coupling-hook Gr, the front wall of one of the side slots being beveled at its top, of the pivoted gravity couplin g-hook G, havin gelbow a to bear against the front wall ot' the slot in which it is pivoted,
yand having its hook end folded back to form PHINEAS PELTON.
