UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VOLNEY M. BRAFFETT, AUGUST BUSOHMANN, AND WILLIAM BUSCHMANN, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
HORSESHOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 245,935, dated August 23, 1881. Application filed May 10, 1881. (No model.)
To an. whom it may concern Be it known that we, VoLNEY M. Bla-AFFE'IT, AUGUST BUscIIMANN, and WILLIAM Buson- MANN, citizens of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Horseshoe-Galks and Mode of Attaching them to Horseshoes, of which the following is a specitication.
Our invention relates principally to the construction of calks for horseshoes and the mode of securing them to the shoe; and the object ot' our invention is to provide horseshoes with heel andtoe calks which may be placed on the shoe or removed therefrom without taking the shoe from the hooi'. This object we accomplish by the devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a plan view of a horseshoe, showing the front calk screwed onto the toe and the heels prepared to receive the heelcalks. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same. Fig. 3 represents a plan view of the shoe, showing the heel and toe calks in position. Fig. 4 is a side view of Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is aperspective view ot' one ofthe heel-calks.
Similar letters in the various views refer to like parts.
A represen ts a horseshoe, with tenons B and shoulders a formed at the heels.
The front calk, C, is L-shaped, the part E being provided with screw-holes, by means of which and the screws D the calk is secured to the toe of the shoe.
The heel-calks F are constructed similar to that shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 5-that is, the rear end forms a head, the part j' forming the call; proper, the part J forming an extension ofthe heels of the shoe, and is provided with a hole, K, to iit on the tenons B ol' the shoe. The arm G projects forward, and has a hole, H', in its end, by means of' which and the shoenail H the calli is secured on the shoe as the shoe is made fast to the hoof. When it becomes necessary to change the calks F,.or to remove them, the nail H is drawn out and the calk slipped oft' ot' the tenon B. The front calk, O, may be removed by removing the screws D.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The calk F, with parts f to act as the calk proper, the part J, with hole K to receive the tenon B, and arm G, with hole H', to secure the calk to the shoeandhoof,sl1bstan tially as shown and described. l
2. The shoe A, with tenons B B at the heels, combined with the ca-lks F, having holes Kfor said tenons, and arms G, with holes H to re ceive a shoe-nail, H, for securing the calks to the shoe, substantiallyas shown and described.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence ot' two subscribing` witnesses.
