Description

G. L. POTVIN. Horseshoe.
No. 226,879. Patented April 27, Isso.
UNITEDv` STATES PATENT OFFICE..
GELOS L. POTVIN, 0F ALPENA, MIGHIGAN.
HoRsEsHoE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 226,879, dated April' 27, 1880.
Application filed January 1D, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GELos L. PoTvIN, of Alpena, in the county of Alpena and State of Michigan,'have invented an Improvement in Horseshoes, of which the following is a speciiication.
The nature ot' this invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the construction of horseshoes; and the invention consists in providing a horseshoe with toe and heel calks of peculiar construction, which can be removed and replaced without removing the shoe from the hoof, all as more fully hereinafter set forth.
Figure l is a perspective View. Fig. 2 is a section through the toe-calli. Fig. 3 isa similar view through one ofthe heel-calks.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specication, A represents a horseshoe, in the heels of which are formed the slots a. The heel-calks B are provided with the dovetail studs b, which fit snugly in the slots a, and they are secured to place by screws c, which pass through them into the heel of the shoe. The toecalk D is also provided with a dovetail stud, d,wl1ich its a correspondingly-shaped slot in the rear edge of the toeof the shoe, as shown, and it is also provided with a short clip, e, which projects in being knocked off when secured in place by the screw c.
It Will be seen that the dovetail d is cut away at the sides at its forward end to admit of its slipping in to place, as otherwise the front calk could not be inserted, on account ot' the clip e.
By this manner of attaching calks to horseshoes they may be readily removed and replaced at will Without removing the shoe from the foot.
What I claim as my invention is l. In combination with a horseshoe, a toeealk, D, provided with a dovetail stud, d, narrowed in front, and a clip, e, and secured to the shoe by means of a screw, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In combination with a horseshoe, the heel-calks B, provided with dovetail studs b, which iit in correspondingly-shaped slots et in the heel of the shoe, and secured to place by f screws c, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
