INVENTOR WITNESSES! UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY A. STEARNS, OF LINCOLN, ASSIGNOR OF TWO-THIRDS TO JOSEPH R. BROWN, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, AND JOHN M. HALL, OF
WALLINGFORD, CONNECTICUT.
AUTOMATIC FIRE-EXTINGUISHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 245,885, dated August 16, 1881.
Application filed May9, 1881. (No hiodel.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY A. STEARNS, of Lincoln, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fire-Extinguishers; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same. reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
[0 When distributers are secured to a system of pipes arranged to distribute water through a building so as to extinguish a fire, whether they are operated automatically or by hand, the impurities in the water, the oxidation of the pipes or fittings, and such impurities as are liable to be in the pipes when they are put up, will be brought from the pipes by the force of the water and lodged in the distribnlers, which, when they are perforated, as is usual, are liable to be closed in whole or part, and are thus prevented from performing the functions for which they are intended, and the safety of the building is thus endangered, notwithstanding plenty of water is available. The object of this invention is to avoid such danger; and the invention consists in providing the distributor with a chamber in which such impurities or solid matter may collect Without interfering with the action of the distributer proper.
Figure l is a view of my improved distributer; and Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same, shown as provided with a seal, so as to form an automatic fire-extinguisher.
3 5 In the drawings, a is a nipple, threaded so that it can be readily secured to the end of a pipe.
1) represents a ball that fits the end of the nipple a, and may be secured by solder fusible at a low temperature. 40
c is the distributor, perforated with small holes; and cl is the sediment-chamber, provided with one or more rows of holes, so that thegwater may pass through the holes and allow the solid matter to settle into the chamber 5 d. When the ball I) is used to close the outlet a large hole is made in the bottom of the chamber (1 to receive the ball, as is shown in Fig. 2 in broken lines; but such large hole may be dispensed with, as there is ample room for the ball in the chamber (1.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure byLetters Patent- 1. In a fire-extinguisl'ier, the combination, with the dist-ributer, of a chamber placed below the distributor to receive the sediment, as described.
2. A perforated distributer provided with a sediment-chamber perforated with holes, as and for the purpose described.
3. The combination, with the nipple a and perforated distributer 0, of the chamber d, constructed to receive the sediment, as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto affixed my name.
HENRY A. STE ARNS.
Witnesses:
DESHLER F. STEARNS, J. E. MONROE.
