Description

(No-Model.)
W. C. DOHBRTY.
FRUIT DRIBR. No. 245,797. Patented Aug. 16,'1881.
- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
WILLIAM O. DOHERTY, OF ALBANY, OREGON.
SPECIFICATION forming part Yof Letters Patent No. 245,797, dated August 16, 1881. Application med May 24, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, WILLIAM C. DoHEa'rY,
of Albany, in the county of Linn and Sta-te ot' Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fruit-Driers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to makeand use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a perspective view of my i1nproved fruit-drier, parts of the frame or casing being broken away in order to show the construction. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the lineman, Fig. 2; and Fig. et is a horizontal sectional view.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to fruit-driers; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction ot' the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim. y
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents a suitable casing, consisting, essentially, ot' a square bottomless box provided at or near its lower end with anges B, and with a curved or n-shaped partition, C, to distribute and radiate the heat from the furnace, upon which the drier is in practice to be placed. Vertical slides or dampers D are provided near the lower end ot' casing A. The sides E E ot' the casing A are provided upon the inside with vertical bars, F, having upward and outward projecting spring-brackets Gr. Adjoining the said bars F are ttted verticali y-s'lidin g bars H, which are also provided with upward and outward projecting spring-brackets I. The lower guides, J, are arranged, as shown, to form shelves .on a level with the bottom ofthe front door or opening, K, with which the device is provided.
Journaled in the upper end of the box or casing are a pair of rock-shafts, L, having crank-arms M, to which the sliding bars H are connected by means of straps or pitmen N. The said shafts are also provided with cranks O connected by a pivoted rod, P, so that an oscillating motionimparted to oneot the shafts shall be instantly communicated to the other. One of the shafts L is provided outside the casingwith aband-wheel or crank, Q, by which it may be conveniently operated.
Shelves or trays R, made of wire-cloth, perforated metal, or in any other suitable manner, are to be employed in connection with my invention.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood.
A tray filled with pared and sliced (or otherwise properly prepared) fruit being placed upon the bottom shelves, J, the shafts L may be operated by the cranks, thus causing the springbrackets I of the vertically-sliding` bars H to lift the said tray up upon the lowermost ofthe brackets Gr of bars F. In the same manner each successive tray may be lifted or elevated, step by step, from the bottom to the top ot' the casing, thus giving to each tray of fruit the benefit ot' the gradually-increasing heat from the bottom to the top ot the drier.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent ot the United States- As an improvement in fruit-driers, the combination, with the herein-described casing A,
having suitable means for radiating the heat, and vertically-sliding bar mechanism for ele.- vatin g the trays step by step from the bottoni of the box, ot the rock-shafts L, journal-ed in the upperend of the casing, having crank-arms M, to which the vertically-slidin gelevating-bars are connected by a pitrnan, N, and cranks O, connected by the pivoted rod P, all arranged and operating substantially as herein shown and specied.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM U. DOHERTY.
