GEARING FOR CLOTH ES-WRINGERS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 245,694, dated August 16, 1881.
Application filed June 16, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEROME BACON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Medina, in the county of Outagamie and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Modes of Operating Olothes-Wringers and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in gearing for clothes-wringers; and it consists in a double pawl attachment for giving motion to a pair of cog-wheels, whereby the rollers may be rotated by a reciprocating lever instead of the ordinary crank method, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention.
Figure'l is a side elevation of a wringer with my attachment affixed thereto. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Figs. 3 and 4 are detailed views of the pawls.

To the end of the shaft b which extends out from the lower roller is rigidly affixed the pinion 0, having the ratchetwheel don its outer face, the pinion and ratchetwheel being in one piece. Meshing in with the pinion c is the large wheel 0, which revolves upon the shaft f, which projects out from the casting g secured to the end of the frame.
On the outer end of the shaft I) is pivoted the lower end of the lever h, which is provided with a suitable hand-grasp, i, and a pawl, is, pivoted at Z. This pawl has its lower edge slightly rounded, and is provided with suitable teeth or projections, m, for engaging the teeth of the ratchet-wheel cl.
Pivoted to the shaft f is the rock-lever a, in the outer end of which is pivoted a second pawl, 0, having a single tooth or projection, 12, which is adapted to fitinto the spaces between the cogs on the periphery of the large wheel 6. The end of the rock-lever n is connected to the hand-lever h by means of the connecting-rod g.
The operation of my invention is as follows:
Upon taking hold of the handle of the lever and drawing it toward you the pawl 0, en gaging with one of the teeth on the large wheel 0, will cause it to rotate in the direction indieated by the arrow, Fig. 2, the pawl It being dragged loosely over the ratchets on the wheel (I. On reversing the motion of the lever and pushing it from you, the pawl 70 will engage with the ratchet-wheel d and cause it to revolve, while the pawl 0 will be loosely dragged over the cogs on the large wheel 0 until the motion is reversed, as will be readily understood. The lower roller, being connected to the shaft I), will be caused to partake of its rotation, imparting motion to the upper roller by friction.
By swinging the pawls around, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 2, thus reversing the angles at which they engage with the wheels, the motion of the rollers can be reversed.
By this arrangement of devices I am enabled to substitute for the ordinary crank movement a reciprocating one that will drive the rollers with as much speed and with a great deal more ease to the operator than the crank movement.
Of course I do not limit myself to the precise arrangement herein described, as this might be altered without departing from the spirit of my invention; nor do I wish to confine the application of my invention to wringing-machines, as it will be found equally useful on other machines in which it may be desired to change a crank movement into a reciprocating one.
Having thus described my invention, I claim-- 1. The combination of the wheel 0, provided with the ratchet-wheel d, large wheel 6, meshiug into wheel 0, hand-lever. h, provided with the reversible pawl 70 for engaging with the ratchet-wheel d, rock-lever a, carrying in its outer end the reversible pawl 0 for engaging with the large wheel 0, the rock-lever being connected to the hand-lever by means of the connecting-rod (1, whereby the reciprocating motion of the hand-lever will impart a rotary motion to the wheels, and through them to any desired machinery, substantially as described.
