A compression spring 38 around the link 36 is confined, endwise, be! tween said pin 35 and a shoulder 39 on the pivoted end of said link. The upper end of the arm 33 is forked as at 40 for the pivot 31 and also to accommodate the spool24. A pair of pins 4! extend from the bifurcations of the fork into thegroove of the spool to effect rotational connection of the element 1' and the toggle means 30. It is obvious that the toggle 30 has two positions to, correspondingly, hold the blade 25 against or spaced from the outer face of the buck pad 2|.
The lower free end of the arm 33 carries a roller" designed to engage the inner face of the cam means 9 to move the arm 33 from the full to the dot-dash line positions shown during rotation of the column in the clockwise direction of arrow Ill.
In operation, a garment such as a shirt S is draped over one buck 6 so that the front edge facings 43 of said garment extend vertically along the outer face of the buck pad 2| on either side of the blade 25. The normal position of the latter is vertical as shown by the dot-dash lines and outwardly spaced from said pad. The shirt facings can now be pulled into place, side by side, and held with one hand as the other is used to press the blade 25 rearwardly. The groove 21 now becomes effective to rotate the blade, the toggle spring 38 is compressed as a dead center position of the toggle is approached, and said spring-becomes effective to draw the rotating blade firmly against the shirt facings 43 and press them smoothly against the pad 2|. The blade 25 is now transversely disposed and, therefore, has an efiective clamping hold on said shirt facings.
The machine is then operated to rotate the column 5 and to bring the shirt draped buck into pressing register with a pressing head (not shown). This rotation will bring the other buck 6 into position to receive a shirt S in the manner above set forth. During the mounting of the latter shirt, the previously mounted shirt is being pressed by the introducing of steam to the chest I8 and to the pressing head.
The machine is then again operated to rotate column 5 in the same direction of rotation. Now, as the roller 42 encounters cam means 9, the arm 33 of the toggle 30 is moved from the full line position to the dot-dash line position, effecting outward and quarter rotational movement of the clamping blade 25 and, therefore, release thereby of the shirt facings 43. The pressed shirt S is then removed and replaced by one to be pressed. The operation continues as above.
5 While I have illustrated and described what I now regard as the preferred embodiment of my invention, the construction is, of course, subject to modifications without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. .1, therefore, do not 4 wish to restrict myself to the particular form of construction illustrated and described, but desire to avail myself of all modifications that may fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described by invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. Mechanism'of the character described comprising a movable buck for receiving a garment to be pressed, a clamp element extending through the buck movable therewith and including a clamping member manually movable to clamp portions of said garment, mechanical means connected to and movable with the clamp element, and stationary means engageable with the mechanical means for effecting release of the clamp member. 2. Mechanism of the character described comprising a movable buck for receiving a garment to be pressed, a clamp element extending through the buck movable therewith and including a clamping member manually 'movable to clamp portions of said garment, mechanical means connected to and movable with the clamp element, and stationary means engageable with the mechanical means for effecting release of the clamp member, said mechanical means comprising an over center spring toggle for holding the clamp element in moved position, and said stationary means comprising a cam for operating the toggle to move the clamp member to release position.
3. In mechanism of the character described,
a buck, an'elongatedclamp plate associated with the front face of said buck, means guiding said clamp plate for bodily movement toward and from a buck, and means for rotating the clamp plate during the latter movement between a spaced aligned position with the face of the buck and an engaged transverse position with respect thereto.
4. In mechanism of the character described, a buck, an elongated clamp plate associated with the front face of said buck, an elongated support for the clamp plate, said clamp plate and support being movable along the axis of the latter, towards and from said buck, and means for rotating the clamp plate during said axial movement between a spaced aligned position with the face of the buck and an engaged transverse position with respect thereto.
5. In mechanism of the character described, a buck having a passage therethrough, an axially movable rod in the passage, means for rotating the rod during axial movement thereof, and a clamp member on the rod and associated with the buck to spirally move toward and from the buck during the mentioned movement of the rod.
'6. In mechanism of the character described, a buck having a passage therethrough an axially movable rod in the passage, means for rotating the rod during axial movement thereof, a clamp member on the rod and associated with the buck for manual spiral movement toward the buck during endwise movement, in one direction, of the rod, spring toggle means for holding said rod in moved position, and means for operating the toggle means to move the rod in the other direction to spirally move the clamp member away from the buck.
7. In a garment pressing machine, a pressing buck element for a garment to be, pressed, an elongated clamp mounted to be turned from a releasing" positiori'lengthwise of the buck to a clamping position crosswise of' the buck and return, over-center, snap-acting spring means on the back of the buck, a helically movable plunger extending through the buck and connecting the clamp on one side of the buck with the spring means on the opposite side of the buck, the spring means at one side of dead center being arranged to tend to move the clamp to a clamping position and at the other side of dead center being arranged to tend to move the clamp to a garment releasing position, a relatively stationary part of the buck and the plunger having helical groove and engaging pin means arranged to effect the turning movement of the plunger and clamp when the spring means is going from one position to the other, a pressing head element, and mechanism connected to move one of said elements to a pressing position with relation to the other element.
