Description

description in connection with STATES PATET OFFICE CONNECTING BASE PLATE Ignatius J. Israelski,
to Federal New York, N. 11.,
Jersey City, N. J., assignor Telephone and Radio Corporation,
a corporation of Delaware Application January 20, 1945, Serial No. 573,795
The present invention relates to a base plate used for mechanically and electrically interconnecting two electrical devices, such as a converter with a regulator.
Mounting one electrical device upon the top of the other, it could not be avoided that the wires of the electrical connections were exposed and consequently, when working with tools, short circuits damaged those devices.
It is, therefore, the main object of the present invention to provide box-like means in which the electrical and mechanical connections between two electrical devices are concealed and not easily accessible.
An additional object of the present invention is to provide box-like means for receiving the electrical and mechanical connections between two electrical devices, whereby the box is open at its bottom to be closed up by the flat surface of the electrical device on which the box is mounted.
It is another additional object of the present 2 Claims. I Cl. 173-328) necting box formed as 2 I Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of Figure 4 is a fragmentary cross the base plate. sectional view of the regulator, showing one of the slotted bolts.
the intercona base plate consists of a plate I of preferably metal sheet, the edges 2 of which are bent downwards as shown in Fig. 2, thereby providing a hollow body with an open base. Four lowered holes 3 are provided near the four corners of the plate I to receive screw bolts (in dotted lines) attaching the plate I securely to the surface Ia of an electric device, as a converter to which another electrical device, as a regulator, is to be connected. This other electrical device (not shown) has a three-point Referring now to the drawings,
connection withthe base plate I by fastening invention to provide a connecting box formed of abase plate with turned over edges thus being open at its bottom whereby the edges being pressed against the surface of the electrical device onwhich the base plate is mounted.
A further object of the present invention is to provide simple means which assure simple connection and easy removal of one electrical device from the other by quick mechanical and electrical connection and disconnection, respectively.
It is another object of the present invention to provide'means for fastening the base plate to one electrical device which base plate is equipped with terminals electrically connected with the leads from the other electrical device.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide spring connections for mounting of another electrical device on the base plate, in order to have fast connecting and'removing It is still another object of the present invention to provide plug-like means for connecting the leads of one electrical device with spring.
contact means of the base plate and to connect said electrical device with the terminals receiving the leads from the other electrical view of the connecting three springs 4 below corresponding holes 5 in the base plate I, which holes are adapted to receive connecting bolts of the other electrical device, as a regulator.
On one side of the plate I a grommet 6 is I provided which is adapted to introduce the leads of theconverter to the terminals fastened to the base plate I.
In order to provide the necessary four terminals for the electrical connection of the leads of the converter with the base plate I the latter is equipped with eight holes 1 arranged in four pairs (Fig. 3). Below the base plate I, where the holes 1 are arranged, two insulating plates 9 and I0, respectively, are provided in spaced relation and are held in the distanced position by insulating tubes 8, which tubes 8 serve not only, as stated as distancing but also as insulating means. Four lugs II extending parallel in one direction and four springs I2 extending parallel in the other direction are provided between the two insulating plates 9 and I0. Rivets I3 extending through the base plate I, the upper inlower insulating plate I0, keep all these elements v in proper position close to lower face of the base plate I ,whereby the tubes 8 insulate the rivets I3 from the lugs II and the springs I2. The base plate I has a longitudinal cutout Hi Just above the ends of the springs I2 and the upper insulating base plate 9 is equipped with four openings I5 in order to receive electrical contacts I5a from the regulator to be mounted on the interconnecting base plate I. Just above the four lugs II the base plate is equipped with another cutout I6 which has on one side a tongue-like projection I1. special plate I8 by means of a screw l9. This cutout I6 is necessary to allow the electrical connection of the leads from the converter to the The cutout I6 can be covered by a 3 four lugs II representing the terminals of the base plate I and after securing the latter connection the plate II covers up the cutout I and the terminals II.
In order to connect the regulator with the converter, it is necessary to fasten the box formed as a base plate I to the surface of the converter by inserting screw bolts (Fig. 2, in dotted lines) into the holes 3 of the box, thereby using the surface of the converter as base for the box. Then the cable from the converter is drawn through the grommet 6 and the wires connected with the four lugs I'I', then the plate I0 screwed on the plate I by means of the screw I9. In order to mount the regulator on the base plate I, three slotted bolts 190., shown in Figure 4 of the regulator 20a are inserted into the holes ii of the base plate I and by turning the bolts 90 the regulator is automatically secured to the base plate I due to the springs l. The four contact bolts of the regulator are inserted into the respective holes I5 of the upper insulating plate 9 through the cutout ll of the base plate I and the mechanical and electrical connections with the base plate I and thereby with the converter is achieved. It is possible to remove the regulator in shortest time just by disconnecting the contact bolts of the regulator from the holes I5 and to turn the connecting bolts of the regulator 90, whereupon the regulator can be removed merely by lifting from the base plate i.
The construction according to the present invention provides a box tightly fastened to the plane surface of one of the electric devices, which box receives and covers up entirely the electric connection between the mentioned and another electrical device to be mounted on the flat box, yet still allows fast disconnection of the electrical and mechanical connection means of the said other electrical device. Thus a very simple interconnecting means between two electrical devices is achieved, which means contains all advantages aimed for in the connection of two devices.
While I have disclosed the principles of my invention in connection with one embodiment, it
' will be understood that this embodiment is given 4 by way of example only and not as limiting the scope of the invention as set forth in the objects and appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A connecting base plate between two electrical devices, comprising a box open at the bottom, a top plate substantially flat, a plurality of terminals insulatedly fastened to said top plate withinthe box, a plurality of contact springs,
each of which is connected with one of said terminals, said fastening and connecting means being such as to maintain both the terminals and spring contacts accessible through openings in said top plate, said contact springs being adapted to receive contact bolts of one of the said electrical devices, and portions of said base plate being depressed from the plane of said top toward the plane of its open bottom, and perforated to secure said plate to the substantially plane surface of the other one of said electrical devices.
2. A connecting plate according to claim 1, in which said top plate is provided with an opening near one edge for entering conductors to be united to said terminals and in which a removable cover plate is provided for the opening affording access to said terminals.
