Description

Nov. 23, 19,48. 7 .1. R. TAcKETT ETAL 2,454,490
I MACHINE TOOL SHAPER ATTACHMENT Original Filed June 12, 1945 Kzyz.
James E Eckefif, Va] '6. Evans,
ATTD RNEYS Patented Nov. 23, 1948 MACHINE TOOL SHAPER ATTACHIHENT James R. Tackett and Val G. Evans, Olive Hill, Ky.
Original application June 12, 1945, Serial No. 599,074. Divided and this application October 23, 1946, Serial No. 705,092
4 Claims.
Our present invention relates to an improved machine tool shaper attachment and more particularly to a combined structure permitting the use of the same tool in alternate positions to plane convex or concave surfaces.
The present embodiment is a divisional application of our pending application Serial No. 599,074, filed June 12, 1945.
In the accompanying drawings we have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention according to the best mode we have thus far devised, but it will be understood that various changes and alterations may be made in the exemplified structure within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational View of the attachment of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a partial front elevational view.
Referring now to the drawings wherein like characters indicate like parts, we have illustrated the present embodiment of our invention as comprising a concrete base 2 for the support 4 of shaper 6. Upon the support 4 we provide the vertically disposed spaced parallel arms or supports 8 forming a vertical guideway for the crosshead l having outstanding spaced flanges or plates l2. The vertical position of the crosshead is fixed on the guideway by set screws [4 and in the outer ends of the flanges we provide a block l6 having pivot arms or pins l8 journaled therein.
A shaft or rocking arm is adjustably secured in the block by screws 22 and the lower end of the shaft is restricted at 24 to receive the tool holder 26 pivotally secured by pin 28 and the cutting tool 36 is detachably secured by screw 32.
A swivel arm or link 34 is provided between the conventional reciprocating ram 36 and a pair of plates 38 so that upon reciprocation of the ram the tool will swing on the pivot l8 to cut or plane a concave surface in' the work on the shaper 6. To efiect a convex surface we provide in a pit 40 a fixed support 42 for the arms 44 pivotally secured at 46 and holes 48 and 50 in the support and arms respectively may receive pins to secure the arms in vertical position. A counterweight 52 eases the movement of the arms 44. Guides 54 are pivotally secured to the arms 44 by pivot boxes 56 secured by set screws 58 and the ends of these guides are connected by a cross head 60 secured by bolts 62.
The lid 64 resting upon supports 66 in the pit may be removed and the arms swing upward and are locked in position. The guide will pivot on the box 56 and with the tool holder detached from the shaft 20 and secured on the crosshead in slots 68 having a hole 10 for the pin 28, the ram will reciprocate and plane the work in a convex curve.
Radii oi the curved surfaces may be selected by adjustment vertically of the block 16 or the block 56 and any radius curve may be cut within the limits of the machine.
Having thus fully described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A shaper attachment for shaper rams comprising a pair of vertically-disposed spaced parallel support, a cross head mounted for vertical sliding movement mounted in the supports, a block pivoted in the cross head, a rocking arm adjustably mounted in the block, a swivel link connecting the lower end of the arm with the shaper ram, and a tool holder on the lower end of the arm.
2. The invention as defined in claim 1 wherein the spaced parallel supports are connected by a cross member, and the cross head has spaced supporting plates for the block, and wherein the block has lateral pivot pins engaging in openings in the plates.
3. The invention as defined in claim 1 wherein the link is pivoted in a housing on the shaper ram, and has a ball head, and the arm carries a block with a ball socket to receive the head.
4. A shaper attachment for shaper rams, comprising pivoted rocking means, supports for the rocking means, a tool holder on the rocking means, and a swivel connection between the rocking means and the shaper ram.
