SUPPORT FOR 'GOLF BAGS Filed Jan. 22. 1946- IN V EN TOR Zniw V Patented Nov. 9, 1948 UNITED STATES PATENT" OFFICE William A. Barden, Waynesville, N. C. Application January 22, 1946, Serial No. 645,021
This invention relates to attachments for golf bags, and particularly to a novel means for bolding the golf bag substantially upright or vertical while the clubs are being applied to it or removed from it, it being the purpose of the inventor to provide an anchoring means attachable to the 2 Claims. (01. 248-96) bag, which anchoring means functions to penetrate the ground to an extent that an anchorage is effected to hold the golf bag in an upright position.
Furthermore, an object of the invention is to provide an anchoring means of the character indicated which has adjustable features adapting the device to be used in connection with golf bags of different heights, although golf bags are usually of standard or uniform character in this respect.
A further object of this invention is to provide an anchoring means, as stated, rotatably attached to a golf bag, the said anchoring means having a pedal or plate which can be pressed by the foot'of an operator for causing the impingement of the anchoring end of the device, and the said pedal or plate furthermore acts as a brace to prevent tilting of the golf bag when it is released by the user.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a holding device for the golf bag comprising few, inexpensive parts which have been found efficient and satisfactory in use.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction, and in the arrangement and combination Fig. 4 illustrates a sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
In these drawings I denotes a conventional type golf bag and 2, a rod which comprises a part of the anchoring means therefor, the said rod having an angularly disposed handle 3, by which it is manipulated or turned, since the said rod is rotatably mounted in eyelets or loops 4 of material anchored to the golf bag structure. The
loops 4 may comprise lengths of metal shaped to form a loop and having ends which penetrate the material of the bag, the ends of said material being wrapped around and anchored to stayrods, such as 5, with which many golf bags are supplied for the purpose of stiffening or strengthening their structure. provided for rotatably mounting the rod on the golf bag so that a pedal or plate 6 on the rod may be moved to a position under the bag.
The lower end of the rod is shaped to form a boring implement such as a drill or auger 1 to facilitate the penetration of the anchoring portion of the rod into the ground. The said rod is furthermore provided with a threaded portion, as at 8, near its end, and the pedal 6 is held at different points of adjustment thereon through the use of nuts 9 and ill on the threaded portion 8 above and below the pedal or plate. By this means, the location of the pedal or plate may be adjusted with relation to the length of the rod for properly positioning the pedal or plate, according to the height of the bag.
When the pedal or plate 6 is under the bag as shown in Figure 1, it can be carried to better advantage than if the pedal is extending outwardly at right angles to the position in which it is shown in Figure 1, although in the outward position, it rests on the surface of the ground, out of line of the bag, and therefore to better advantage braces the bag and retains it upright.
As shown, the invention comprises comparatively few parts which are adjustable, and the handle serves to aid in forcing the anchoring ends into place by rotating the rod, whereas pressure on the pedal or plate furthermore facilitates the said anchoring procedure.
I claim:
1. A support for a golf bag comprising a rod having a handle, a boring end and a threaded portion near the said boring end eccentrically positioned, a plate or pedal having an aperture to receive the rod, and nuts threaded on the threaded section of the rod, one above and one below the plate or pedal and bearing thereagainst whereby the plate or pedal is held at different positions of adjustment on the rod, and
whereby when the rod is turned to one position the plate underlies the end of the bag and when the rod is turned to another position the plate extends outwardly beyond the bag to form a support.
2. A support for a golf bag comprising a rod having a handle at one end and a ground penetrating point at the other end, a plate provided In any event, means are REFERENCES CITED The following references are of record in the file of this patent:
