This invention relates to improvements in means and method for cow stall sanitation.

One of the principal objects of the instant invention is to provide a simple means for encouraging the animal to refrain from standing in the excreta trench common to cow stalls.

Another object is that of such means being marketed in a form for convenient association with varying widths of trenches.

Still another is to provide such an instrumentality that after a comparatively short use may be readily removed for use elsewhere, or be placed in storage without changing the normal functioning of the stall.

Other objects and advantages may appear in the further description of the invention.

Referring now to the drawing, forming part of this application, and in which, like reference numerals indicate like parts,

Fig. 3 is a central sectional view of a fragmental portion of a common cow stall having one embodiment of the sanitary devices installed in the trench thereof.

In the drawing, I represents the common cow stall oor having associated therewith an excreta trench 2, it also being common to such stalls and usually being from fourteen to eighteen inches in width.

3 and 4 represent elongated rectangular strips upon which the main body of my invention is mounted, said strips being made preferably of Wood and of sufficient length so that they may be cut to the width of the trench to which they are to be applied.

Spaced somewhat from the forward ends of these strips, as clearly seen in the drawing, is mounted the triangularly-shaped metal guard comprising the vertical upright portion 5 and the inclined portion vI5, both of whose lower edges are turned inwardly to form'the flange- like portions 8 and 9 that provide suitable means for bolting said guard to the strips 3 and 4. The ilange 8 is of greater width than the one 9 providing con venience in attaching same to said supporting strips.

The vertical wall 5 of the device is, when mounted upon the strips 3 and 4, not to exceed the depth of the trench as shown in Fig. 3. and the inclined wall of same being approximately at a forty-five degree angle with respect to the bottom of the trench.

The spaced relationship of the vertical Wall of the guard from the end of the strips, is for the purpose of providing such space between said vertical wall and the end of the stall, making it possible for a cow, when attempting to step backwardly, but slightly, to quickly realize that such movement is objectionable on her part in that the dewclaws engage the uppermost apex of said guard causing her quickly to refrain from such attempt of stepping backwardly. Then should she persist in such movement by reaching further backwardly, the toes of her hoof will engage the inclined Wall making it still more uncomfortable to continue in such practice; hence she will ordinarily try but few times to find comfort in changing the inclination of her body.

Thus there is provided a simple auxiliary device for application to any ordinary width of trench. and which may be of any desired length, although it is found in practice that from two to three feet is sufficient for the common cow stall, and it has proved exceedingly satisfactory in preventing a cow, when said stall is thus equipped, from standing with her hind feet in the trench where possibly contacting manure, which, when the animal steps up in the stall, subsequently becomes dabbed on her body, and especially about her udder and adjacent portions so objectionable to sanitation.

It has also been conclusively proved that from two to four days use of the device in a stall of an ordinary cow, will train same to refrain from such practice without the use of a guard; thus said guard may be preserved in storage for subsequent use when necessary.

Furthermore, when the exereta fall upon the inclined baffle, they do not splash in all directions as is the case when same contact the level surface of the floor of the trench.

It has been found in actual practice that these instrumentalities may be handled individually with a fork for example, when objectionably fouled as the case may occur at times, and for removal for individual cleansing purposes, as well as that for cleaning the trench, and again returned in a most expeditious manner.

Having thus described one embodiment of my invention, what I claim is:

1. A portable instrumentality for application within the excreta trench at the rear of a cow stall, comprising two spaced parallel base members, said base members being in length substantially the Width of said trench and an elongated baiile having a vertical wall and an inclined wall,

said balile being xed upon said base members longitudinally of said trench with the vertical wall of said balile spaced inwardly a relatively short distance from one end of said base members whereby when installed within said trench in the rear of said stall a vertical open space exists intermediate of the trench Wall of said stall and the vertical face of said baille.

A portable sanitary rack for tile excreta trench of a cow stall, comprising in combination, spaced'ibasemembers of .a length to readily t transversely Within-said trench and an elongated metal baffle fixed to said base members, said baille having a Vertical and an inclined wall, said vertical Wall being spaced inwardlyr atene end of said base members for spaced relation to the trench Wall of said stall wheniinsta'lled within said trench.

4. A portable sanitary instrumentality adapted to be installed Within the eXcreta trench c ommon to coW stalls, comprising a plurality of transverse base members for engagement upon the floor of said trench and an elongated baille mounted upon said base members longitudinally of said trench,
