NITED STATES GEORGE W. NIoHoLs,
PATENT QrricE.
OF CLINTON, IOWA.
LOG ROLLING AND SORTING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 245,312, dated August 9, 1881.
' Application filed March 23,1881. (No model.)
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. NICHOLS, of Clinton city, in the county of Clinton and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Log Rollin g and Sorting Machines and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description oftheinvention, whichwillenableothers skilled in the art to which it appertainsto m ake and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawing, and to letters of reference marked I thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to log rolling and sorting machines in saw-mills, in which the logs are moved from the logwa-y to the carriage by means of a post adjustable laterally and vertically, and by two lines of carrying or transfer chains operated by sprocket-wheels, the object of the invention being to effect the transfer of the logs by machineryinstead of byhandlabor, and in the shortest practicable time, as hereinafter fully described, and as illustrated by the drawing, which is a vertical section showing the essential operating parts, substantially the same being required at each end of the machine.
A is a log in position on the live rollers O, to be transferred to the log-deck and rotary carriage.
Arepresents the log on the log-deck being transferred to the rotary carriage B.
G is one of the carrying-chains, arranged to run in suitable ways on thelog-deck, and provided with the lugs or spurs I).
E EE represent the sprocket-wheels which carry the chain 0.
F designates the timbers of the log-deck.
J is a friction-sheave at the lower end of the post N for the chain M to run in, one end of which chain is attached at b to the machineframe, and the other end of the chain is attached to the spool K, which is adjusted to be revolved by a friction-wheel, K, operated by anywell-knownpoweranddevices. (Notshown in the drawing.)
P P are chains attached to the upper end of the post N and to the machine-frame at P P".
X is a slide, provided with a recess at 0 to receive loosely the post N, and is arranged to slide in the guide 61 attached to the machineframe, or in any other suitable well-known guide. This slide is attached, by the link-connection b, to the arm Y, rigidly fastened to bar Y, pivoted at c to a bearing secured to the frame of the machine by any well-known devices. (Not shown in the drawing.)
Z Z are foot presser-bars attached to the ends of the bar Y.
A log being deposited by a bull-chain on the live rollers 0, as shown at A, the bar Z is pressed downward, which, by means of the bar Y and arm Y, moves the slide Xoutward, throwing the upper end of the postbeyond the center of the log, as shown in the drawing. The spool K being set in motion the chain M is Wound up, raising the post and chain P. The devices at the other end of the machine being operated in the same way and at the same time, the log is raised at both ends and rolled over onto the log-deck and carried forward by the carrying-chains, as shown at A, to the rotary carriage, as shown at A, where it is dogged ready for sawing.
In case it is desired to transfer a log to the opposite side of the live rollers, the bar Z is pressed downward, moving the slide backward, carrying the upper end of the post beyond the center of the log in the opposite direction to that shown in the drawing, and the raising of the post in that position will roll the log to the opposite side of the live rollers.
In double saw-mills the sorting of logs and transferring them to different carriages in the usual way requires much time and labor; but with my improved devices the logs can be sorted and sent to either side, at the will of the operator, by simply shifting the post N to the one or to the other side of the center of the log, as herein described.
WVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The post N and chains P P, attached rigidly at one end and connected at the other end with the top of the post, adjustable laterally andvertically, the upper end of the post being arranged and adapted to be shifted to either side of the center of the log arranged on the live rollers, and, with the chains, to be raised vertically by mechanism substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. The combination, with the post N, having IOC post may be shifted, of the carrying-chains 0,
provided with the spurs D, and adjusted torun in ways on the log-deck, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own invention 1 aftix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE WASHINGTON NICHOLS.
