annularspace 59, ports 55 into tail pipe 49 and then .through openings 6 I `into the well hole. The charge is completely expelled from the cylinder by causing the piston to move downwardly with the aid of the jars 42, if necessary, as already described for the preferred form of the device.
Cleaning the apparatus after use may be accomplished by introducing a cleaning fluid into the apparatus through port 22 while the top of the tail pipe abuts the bottom of bushing I, thus opening discharge port 2l, and when the piston `is raised to the top of the cylinder. The cleaning fluid then may flow through the cylinder, discharge valve and tail pipe. i The cleaned apparatus is made ready for reloading as already described.
Among the advantages of the invention are that the liquid charge-is fully protected from contamination by fluids in the well hole; complete expulsion of the charge from the container is assured and return of charge or other uid thereinto is precluded while the apparatus is in the well; by employing a known volume of liquid in the container, the amount deposited in the well can be accurately controlled; and viscid liquids such` as some of the synthetic resin-forming liquids, e. g. phenol-formaldehyde resin-forming liquids which are dicult to place in deep wells by usual methods can be readily and accurately conveyed to the bottom of deep wells and deposited therein with the apparatus.
I claim:
1. A bailer for depositing a liquid in a well comprising in combination a container for the liquid, said container having a discharge port in the bottom; a piston operable in the container for expelling the liquid therefrom; a piston rod having one end attached to the piston to operate the same; latch means adapted to engage the piston rod to prevent longitudinal outward movement of the piston rod relative to the container; latch release means adapted to disengage the latch means from the piston rod; a tail pipe adapted to receive and discharge liquid from the container; and a discharge valve linked to the tail pipe and adapted to control the flow of iluid from the cylinder to the tail pipe` through said discharge port, said discharge valve being operable by longitudinal movement of the said tail pipe relative to the container.

A bailer for depositing a liquid in a well comprising in combination a container for the liquid, said container having a discharge port in the bottom; a piston operable in the container for eX- pelling the liquid therefrom; a ratch having one endy secured to the piston to operate the same; pawls adapted to engage the ratch to prevent longitudinal outward movement of the ratch relative `to the container; means to release the pawls fromengagement with the ratch; a tail pipe in communication with the container and operable to discharge liquid from the container; and a discharge valve linked to the tail pipe and adapted to control the flow of liquid from the cylinder to the tail pipe through said discharge port, said discharge valve being operable by longitudinal movement of the tail pipe relative to the container.
3. Abailer for depositing a liquid in a well comprising in combination a container for the liquid, said container having a discharge. port in the bottom; a piston operable in the container for eX- pelling the liquid therefrom; a piston rod having one endattached to the piston to operate the Same; means on the other end of the pistonrod for; securing the same to a suspension means:- latch means adapted to engage thepiston rod to prevent longitudinal outward movement ofthe piston rod relative to the container; latch release` means for disengaging the latch means fromthe piston rod; a tail pipe communicating with the` container and operable to discharge liquidfroml the container; a discharge valve adapted to control flow of liquid from the container to the tailv pipe throughsaid discharge` port, said discharger l valve being operable by longitudinal movement of 1 the tail pipe relative to the container.
4. A bailer for depositing a liquid in a well comprising in combination a cylinder for the liquid, said cylinder having a `discharge `port in the bottom, a piston operable in the cylinder for ex-` pelling the liquid therefrom, a piston rod adapted to operate the piston, a cylinder head having, an opening therethrough through which the piston rod extends, a latch means supported -by the cylin-` der head and adapted to engage the piston rod to prevent longitudinal outward movement of the` piston rod relative to the cylinder, latch release' means adapted to disengage the latch means from the piston rod, a discharge `valve in the bottom` of the cylinder adapted to control the flow of liquid from the cylinder through the said discharge port, a tail pipe communicating with the cylinder and linked to the said discharge `valve to operate the said valve by longitudinal movement relative to the cylinder, said tail pipe being operable to discharge liquid from said cylinder.
5. A bailer for depositing a liquid in a well corn- .prising in combination a cylinder for the liquid;`
a piston in the cylinder for expelling the liquid therefrom; a piston rod having one end attached to the piston; latch means adapted to engage the piston rod to prevent longitudinal outward movement of the piston rod relative to the cylinder;
`latch release `means adapted to disengage the latch means from the piston rod; a slide valve housing communicating with the bottom ofthe cylinder and having a`cleaning port in its side wall, said cylinder having a discharge port in the bottom forming a passage from the cylinder to the slide valve housing; a slide valve in the slide valve housing adapted to form a closure for the said cleaning port; a discharge valve secured to said slide vvalve adapted to control the flow of iluid through the said discharge port; `a tail pipe operable to discharge liquid from the cylinder, said tail pipe having an end connected to the slide valve, `said slide valve having a passage` 6. A `bailer for depositing a, liquid in a well comprising in combination a cylinder for the liquid, said `cylinder having a discharge port in the bottom; a piston operable in the cylinder for` expelling the liquid therefrom; a piston `rod having` serrations along the surface to form a ratch, one end of the ratch being secured to the' piston; a, cylinder head having an opening therethrough through which the piston rod extends; a housing attached to the cylinder head and surrounding the piston rod; pawls in the housing adapted to engage the serrations onthe piston rod to prevent longitudinal outward movement of the piston rod relative to the cylinder; means to `release,` the pawls from engagement with theV 7, serrations; a cylindrical slide valve housing. communicating with the said discharge port and havingy a cleaning Vport in the side wall thereof; a slide valveV operable in the slide valve housing to open and close the cleaning port; a discharge port closure attached to the said slide valve adapted to control the ow of iiuid through the saidv discharge port; a tail pipe operable to discharge liquid from the cylinder, saidtail pipe having an end secured to the said slide valve whereby longitudinal movement of the tail pipe relative to the cylinder operates the said slide valve yand the said discharge port closure, said tail pipe having a passage communicating with the said discharge port, said cleaning port providing an entrance for the introduction of a cleaning liquid into the slide valve housing, slide valve, and tail pipe when the discharge valve is closed.
'7. A bailer for depositing a liquid in a Well comprising in combination a cylinder for the liquid having a loading port near the top and a discharge port at the bottom, a piston operable in the cylinder for expelling the liquid therefrom, a piston rod having one end attached to the piston,
ka head.A on the top of the cylinder provided with an opening through Which the piston rod extends, latch means secured to the cylinder head adapted to engage the piston rod to prevent longitudinal outward movement of the` piston rod relative to the container, latch release means adapted to disengage the latch means from the piston rod,A a discharge valve adapted to close the discharge port, a discharge valve stem on the discharge valve and extending through the discharge port, a tail pipe having` one end secured to the said discharge valve stem whereby its longitudinal movement relative to the container moves the said discharge valve. to open or close the discharge port, said tail pipe having a passage cornmunicating with the said discharge port.
8. A bailer for depositing gliquid in a well comprising in combination a cylinder for the liquid, a piston operable within the cylinder for expellingthe liquid therefrom, said cylinder having a charging port in the cylinder wall below the place occupied by the ,piston when `at the top of the cylinder and a discharge port at the bottom, a piston rod having one end secured to the piston, latch means adapted to engage the piston rod to prevent longitudinal outward movement of the piston rod relative to the cylinder, latch release means adapted to disengage the latch means from the piston rod, a discharge valve adapted to close the discharge port, a discharge valve stem attached to the discharge valve and extending through the discharge port, a tubular extension below the cylnder and having its interior communicating with the discharge port and adapted to form a, housing for the discharge valve stem, a tail pipe having one end extending into the tubular extension and secured to the discharge valve stem whereby'longitudina'l move-` ment of the tail pipe relative to the cylinder' operates the discharge valve to open or close the discharge port, said tail pipe having a passage communicating with the said discharge port and being operable to discharge liquid from the cylinder.
9. A Ibailer for depositing a liquid ina well comprising Yin combination a cylinder for theV liquid; a piston operable within the cylinder for'expelling the liquid therefrom; said cylinder having a charging port in the cylinder wall below the place occupied by the piston When-at the top of the cylinder and a discharge port at the bottom; a
piston rod having one end secured to the piston; latch means adapted to engage the piston rod to prevent longitudinal outward movement ofthe piston rod relative to the cylinder, latch'release means adapted to disengage the latch means from the piston rod; a valve adapted vto close the` discharge port; a valve stem attached to the:
valve and extendingthrough the discharge port; atubular extension below the cylinder having its' interior communicating withrthe discharge port pipe being operable to discharge liquid from thev cylinder.

A bailer for depositing a liquid'in a Well comprising in combination a cylinder for the liquid; a piston operable within the cylinder forV expelling the liquid therefrom; said cylinder having a charging port in the cylinder wall below the place loccupied by the piston when at the top of the cylinder and a discharge port at the bottom; a piston rod having one end secured to the piston; means attached to the other end of the piston rod for suspending it on a cable; a cylinder head attached to the top of the cylinder having an l opening therethrough through which the piston rod extends; latch means supported by the cylinder head for preventing longitudinal outward movement of the piston rod relative to the cylinder; latch release means adapted to render inoperative said latch means; a valve adapted to close the `discharge port; a valve stem attached to the valve and extending through the discharge port; a tubular extension below the cylinder having its interior communicating with the -discharge port and adapted to form a housing for the valve stern; a tail pipe having one end extending into the tubular extension and secured to the valve stem whereby longitudinal movement of the tail pipe relative to the cylinder operates the valve to open or close the dischargev port; a head on the tubular extension having an opening therethrough to admit the tail pipe in` sliding relationship, said tailpipe having a port' in the side wall near the point of attachment 'to the valve stern whereby liquid released through; the discharge port enters the tail pipe, said tail pipe being `operable to discharge liquid .from thev cylinder.

a piston rod having one end secured to the piston; means attached to the other end of the piston rod for suspending it on a cable; a cylinder head attached to the top of the cylinder having an opening therethrough through which the piston rod extends; latch means supported by the cylinder head for preventing longitudinal out# ward movement of the piston rod relative to the cylinder; latch release means adapted to render inoperative said latch means; a cylindrical slide valve housing attached to the cylinder and having its interior communicating with the discharge port of the cylinder and provided with a cleaning port communicating With the exterior of the housing near the end attached to the cylinder; a cylindrical slide valve adapted to open and close fthe cleaning port by longitudinal movement Within the slide valve housing; a top end member on the slide valve having ports for the passage of liquid therethrough; a valve closure means carried by said top end member adapted to close the discharge port of the cylinder when the slide valve moves l into the position opening the cleaning port; a bottom end member on the slide valve forming a closure therefor; a tail pipe attached to the bottom member and in communication with the interior of said slide valve whereby liquid from the cylinder entering the top end member of the slide valve passes through it into close the cleaning port and open the discharge port, respectively, when the weight of the apparatus is borne by the tail pipe, and to open the cleaning port and close the discharge port when the weight of the apparatus is borne by the piston rod, said tail pipe being operable to discharge liquid from said cylinder.
