` SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 245,301, dated August 9, 1881. Application iiled February 16, 1881. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRED. MANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cork-Extractors, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ot the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it apperta-ins to make and use the same, reference being had to theaccompanyiug drawings, and to the letters and iigures marked thereon, which forni a part of this specitication.

My invention relates to improvements in cork-extractors, and pertains to that class which are applied to the periphery ofthe cork when extracting it from a bottle, whereby a cork may be withdrawn without being punctured or damaged.

The object of my improvements is to provide a cork-extractor which may be folded together in a neat and compact form and he convenientl y carried in a persons pocket.

My invention is further explained by reference totheaccompanying drawings, in which- Figure l representsa perspective view. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section. Fig. 3 represents one ot'the lifting-arms detached from the handie.

Like parts are represented by the same ret'- ere`nce-letters throughout the several views.

A is the handle ot' the extractor, which is tubular in shape, whereby great strength, in proportion to the weight ot' material used, is attained, while the space within its walls serves as a convenient receptacle for the lifting-arms F and Gr'. One end of the tube Ais provided with a rigidly-fixed cap, O, while the opposite end is provided with a nicely-fitting detachable cap, B, to which arm F is rigidly secured. Arm G is attached at one end of the handle A by pivot n., upon which it turns as the free end is swung from and toward the handle. The upper and lower sides of the handle A are respectively provided with slots E and K, for the reception of the arms F andG.

When desirous to carry the device in a compact forni in a persons pocket or otherwise arm Gis inclined downward into the handle through the slot E, as shown in Fig. 2, when arm F is inserted in the opposite end of the handle, and the cap B pressed firmly over the end of the same, to which it is closely itted. The circular flange of cap B projects far enough over the end ofthe handle to engage upon the free end of arm G when arm G is closed, and thus retains said arm in its closed position, as shown in said Fig. 2.

When desirous to extract a cork from a bottle, arm F, with cap B, is iirst withdrawn from the handle and inserted through the slots E and K from the upper side ot' the handle, as shown in Fig.1, and arm G is swung downward, thus bringing the two arms in a position nearly parallel to each other and at right angles to the handle. When the arms are thus arranged they are respectively inserted between the cork and the neck of the bottle, as shown in Fig. I. The cork H is first loosened by turning the extractor toward the right or left in the neck I, when by simultaneously drawing and turning the cork is readily withdrawn.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In cork-extractors, the tubular handle A, provided with slots E and K, removable cap B, and fixed cap O, as adapted to serve both as a handle to and a receptacle for the liftingarms, substantially as set forth.

2. In cork-extractors, the detachable arm F, provided with cap B, adapted to closely lit the end oi' the handle and retain the arm therein, substantialiy as set forth.

3. In cork-extractors, the combination of the tubular handle A, provided with slots` E and K, with pivoted swinging arm G,and detachable arm F, provided with cap B, said arms being adapted to be inclosed within the handie, or arranged at right angles thereto, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

4. The cork-extractor herein described, consisting in the combination ofthe tubular handle A provided with slots E and K, pivoted swinging arm G, pivot a., detachable arm F, provided with cap B, all substantially as and for the purpose specitied.
