2 Claims. 1 This invention relates to vehicle window regulatorsbut more particularly to cross arm regulators which are employed for actuating window panels of automobiles.
An object is to produce a regulator of the above type in which the operating unit is spaced substantially from the regulator mechanism but is connected thereto in such manner that the effort required for. operation is substantially reduced.
Another object is to provide a cross arm window regulator with bell crank means actuated by the remote control unit, the parts being so constructed limitation, embodiments of the invention arev shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an inside fragmentary side elevational view of an automobile door partly broken away, illustrating a window regulator in which the present invention is embodied;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary transverse sectional view of the mechanism shown in Figure 1, taken substantially on line 2-2 of Figure 1; and
Figure 3 is a perspective view of a portion of the invention.
The present invention embraces, in particular, adjusting means for window regulating mechanism and is especially applicable where a window regulator of a substantially standard design is to be installed in the window well of an automobile door. Such apparatus may be employed in either front or rear doors with equa1 facility. Minor adjustments to the mounting members are not infrequently necessary during installation due to inaccuracy or irregularity of the door structures. Furthermore, variously styled doors may provide for the window operating handle in different positions or relation with respect to the location of the regulator. In Figures 1, 2 and 3 of the drawings, I have shown an embodiment of the invention, a description of which follows.
An automobile door D (Figure 1) which may be, for purposes of illustration, a front door of standard construction, includes outside and inside panels l I] and l I respectively, enclosing a well l2 into which the usual window regulating mechanism is disposed. A window panel l3 arranged to slide vertically into the well in guide channels I4 is under the control of a window regulator indicated generally at 15. The guides l4 extend into the well to support the window It when it is lowered and concealed from View by the door panels. In this lowered position, the regulator 15 assumes the broken line position I511.
The window panel l3 has secured to its lower edge the usual channel bar ll to which are secured depending laterally spaced horizontal guide members or retainers l8 adapted slidably to receive studs or rollers l9 carried by the arms of the regulator l5. The crossed regulator arms designated respectively as a driving arm 20 and a guide or balance arm 2| are pivoted together medially of their length at 22 and are arranged to swing through an arc of substantially degrees as the window is lowered into the well l2 to the concealed position.
The arm 20 is mounted at the end opposite its stud IQ for swinging movement about a fixed stud 2t fixed to a mounting plate 25, which is adapted to be secured to the inside door panel, as shown in Figures 1 and 2. The arm 2i is provided on its end opposite the stud l 9 with a stud [9a adapted to slide within a horizontal slot lllb formed in the mounting plate and extending in a direction parallel to a plane passing through the fixed stud 24.
Driving means for operating the regulator comprises generally a relatively short lever arm 30, to be described in detail presently, connected at one end to the driving arm 20, inclining upwardly and laterally therefrom, and having its other end connected by a link 3| to a gear sector 32 pivoted on a mounting plate 33. The sector 32 and associated parts form a substantially unitary assembly for attachment to the inner door panel II, which further includes a drive pinion 34 for driving the gear 32 mounted on a driving shaft 35 supported within a conventional friction clutch device 36 also secured to the mounting plate 33. A conventional crank handle shown in broken lines may be attached to the shaft 35 for actuating the regulator mechanism from the inside of the door, as will be readily understood.
The mechanism thus far described represents a construction, which is adapted to be assembled as a unit into a previously formed door. At times, doors of different manufacture often provided for locating the crank handle in diiierent positions with respect to the regulator mounting plate 25. This may require for instance, reducing'or enlarging the length of the link 3| from that shown in Figure 1 and also altering the ansular relation of the lever 30 with the arm 20 so that proper leverage at all times can be main- 3 taind. This is accomplished in the present invention by forming the lever 30 separately from the arm 20, as shown in Figure 3, and, when the desired relation is determined, securing the two members together by means of rivets 31. Holes 38 for the rivets in the lever 30 may be formed prior to assembly with the arm 20 and holes 39 in the arm 20 drilled to assure proper alignment of the members. To enable adjustment of the angular relation of the arm 20 and lever 30, additional rivet holes 394: (only one of which is shown) may be provided in the arm 20. Irithis: manner, the lever 30 may be initially adjusted to compensate for different length links 3|.
It is to be understood that numerous changes; in details of construction, arrangement and operation may be effected without departing from the spirit of the invention especially as defined in the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1.--Automobile window regulator "mechanism comprising a swinging regulator arm adapted operatively toengage at its outer end an edge portion of a window panel for actuation thereof, a "pivotal mounting for the inner end of said arm,
separate actuatingmeans disposed at one side of the plane of window movement, an operative conne'ction between said actuating means-and said *regulator arm,said connectionincluding a horizontally' disposed link and a relatively short arm to the outer end of which said link-ispivoted, said short arm extending at substantiallyright angles 1 to-the inner end of said swinging arm and-being initially adjustable angularly relative thereto during installation of the regulator mechanism, and means for securing said short arm rigidly to the end portion of said swinging arm.
2. Automobile window regulator mechanism as claimed in claim 1, comprising enlargements on p the adjacent ends of the swinging regulator arm and the'shortarm; said enlargements having apertures for selective registration and fasteners insertable through the registering apertures en- "'abling rigid securing of the parts after proper ,"angular adjustment of the short arm has been effected.
