Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose kof illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral designates a yoke formed of a pair of spaced parallel vertical rods 6 connected at their ends by cross bars 'i and 8, the upper cross bar 'I having the lower end of a rod 3 attached thereto, while the lower cross bar 8 has the upper end of a pump rod I0 attached thereto.
A motor cylinder II is positioned between the rods 6 of the yoke, the cylinder having guides I2 #port 11.3adapted'fior attaching to the :upper 'end of a Yconventional form of punrp barrel I4 :byset -screws or the like I5. 'The support |3 is formed with 'vertically extending slots` 256 in which 'the llower cross-bar lil 4works. 'The valve stem -23 is formed with an annular groove ZSin'which spring--projectedballs 29 carried by thepistonare adapted to seat to releasably secure the valve '23 'in its downward open position.
A-cylindrio-alfchamber'30 is formed at one side ofthe cylinder'li, the chamber andcylin'der having communication at their upper ends by way of a passage 3l and the bottom of the chamber 30 is closed and provided with a passage 32 leading to the intake side of a gear pump 33 of conventional construction. The pump 33 is secured to one side of the support I3 and includes a shaft 34 driven in any suitable manner from an electric motor 35 attached to the lower side of the vchamber 30.
A passage 36 connects the outlet side of the pump 33 to the bottom of the cylinder II under the piston I8. The passages 32 and 36 are also connected to each other by means of a by-pass 3 passage 31 having a manually operable valve 38 therein and by means of which uid is adapted to pass directly from the lower portion of the chamber 30 to the lower portion of the cylinder II when the pump 33 is not in operation.
In the operation of the device, the lower section of the pump rod i is attached to the well pump and the valve 38 is closed and the motor 35 operated, whereby the pump 33 will force liquid from the chamber 30 into the bottom of the cylinder II and thus force the piston or plunger I8 upwardly to raise the pump rod I0.
When the piston or plunger I8 reaches its upper position, the trip 24 will strike the bumper 21, whereby to force the valve 22 downwardly into its open position where it is held in its open position by the spring-projected balls 29 engaging the -groove 28 of the stem of the valve. The weight of the pump rod, yoke and piston I8 will then lower the pump rod, the liquid in the cylinder II being by-passed through the'passages and 2l in the piston around the piston so as not to interfere with the lowering movement thereof. When the valve 22 engagesthe bottom of the cylinder I I, the valve will be closed and fluid pressure entering the lower portion of the cylinder through the passage 36 will then again raise the pist-on and the operation will continue.
A windmill (not shown) may be attached to the upper section of the rod 9 for operating the pump of the well when the motor 35 is not in use and the valve 38 is then opened so as to provide for the free passage of liquid from the lower portion of the chamber 30 through the by-pass passage ,31 into the cylinder Il, so that the piston I8 may work freely' in the cylinder.
A light weight oil is preferably provided in the `cylinder I I and chamber 30 for operating the piston I8 and a passage 39 is provided in the gear pump 33 leading to a bearing assembly 40 for the shaft 34 for utilizing the oil for lubricating the shaft.
It is believed the details of construction, manner of operation and advantages of the device will be readily understood from the foregoing without further detailed explanation.
While I have shown and described a preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed. i
Having thus described the invention, claim is:
1. In a pump jack, the combination, which comprises, a motor cylinder xedly mounted on a well casing, a double end yoke associated with said motor cylinder, a pump -rod extending into the well casing from the lower end of the yoke,
what I .and a piston rod extending into the motor cylin- Vderfrom the upper end of the yoke; a piston in vthe said motor cylinder positioned on the end of said piston rod, a valve having a stem longitudinally positioned and slidable in said piston, contact ngers extending from the end of said valve stem positioned on opposite sides of said piston rod, said piston having a valve seat associated with said valve, said valve extending beyond the end of the piston and positioned for contact with the end of the motor cylinder wherein contact of the valve with the inner surface of the end of the cylinder closes the valve, said piston having a passageextending therethrough associated with the valve and adapted to be closed thereby, said ngers of the valve stem positioned to actuate the said valve to open position upon engagement thereof with an obstruction in the opposite end of the cylinder and means resiliently holding said valve in the open position.
2. In a pump jack, the combination, which comprises, a motor cylinder xedly mounted on a well casing, a double-end yoke associated with said motor cylinder, a pump rod extending into the well casing from the lower end of the yoke, and a piston rod extending into the motor cylinder :from the upper end of the yoke; a piston on the said piston rod positioned in said motor cylinder, a valve having a stem longitudinally positioned and slidable in said piston, contact ngers extending from the end of said valve stem positioned at opposite sides of said piston rod, said piston having a valve seat associated with said valve, said valve extending beyond the end of the piston and positioned for contact with the end of the motor cylinder wherein contact of the valve with the inner surface of the end of the cylinder closes the valve, said piston having a passage extending therethrough associated with the valve and adapted to be closed thereby, said fingers of the valve stem positioned to actuate the said valve to open position upon engagement thereof with an obstruction at the opposite end of the cylinder, means resiliently holding said valve in the open position, a complementary bypass cylinder positioned parallel to said motor cylinder, and means connecting said bypass cylinder to said motor cylinder for freedom of travel of said piston.
