Description

Oct. 12, 1948. I B. M, DEAN 2,451,014
STRAINER Filed April 4, 1947 Bea'i 'riceMDean abtomwx Patented Oct. 12, 1948 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE STRAINER Beatrice M. Dean, Los Angeles, Calif.
Application April 4, 1947, Serial No. 739,447
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to a strainer for hot beverages and the like and has relation more particularly to a strainer adapted to be employed in connection with a vacuum type of percolator.
Primarily, it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this kind which, when in applied or working position, provides means to prevent grounds of cofiee, leaves of tea, and the like to be in the decoction when served.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved strainer, whereby certain advantages are attained, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order that my invention may be better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in top plan of a strainer constructed inaccordance with an embodiment of the invention;
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 22 of Figure 1, with parts in elevation; and
Figure 3 is a view in perspective of the device as herein illustrated in applied position, the associated percolator being indicated diagrammatically by broken lines.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawing, the strainer comprises an elongated stem I of desired dimensions and preferably made of a non-corrosive material which can be readily immersed within a percolator or kindred hot drink maker without objectionable results. The top end of the stem I is provided with a circular head 2 of relatively small radius and which is rigid with the stem I. This head 2 is integral with and at right angles to the axis of the stem I.
Riveted as at 3 or otherwise secured to theperipheral wall of the head 2 is an annular screening element 4 herein disclosed as constituting a reticulated fabric of fine mesh. The edge of the head 2 has an encircling groove therein in which is fitted the inner edge of the annular screen, said rivets passing through the groove as shown. This element 4 entirely surrounds the head 2 and the outer or peripheral portions of the element 4 are reinforced by the binder 5 of metal or other suitable firm material which not only protects the outer margin of the element 4 but allows for effective contact of the device with the bowl B or the like of a percolator.
The device as herein disclosed is particularly adapted for use in connection with a percolator of a type wherein the bowl is provided with an elongated depending nozzle 6 which discharges within a collecting vessel 1 of a type from which the decoction is to be served. The lower or free extremity of the stem I is threaded, and engaged with such threaded portion 8 is a nut 9. Extending outwardly from the nut 9 at diametrically opposed points and disposed downwardly therefrom on a predetermined angle are the arms I0 of desired length and which, as the nut 9 is turned home, are adapted to have contact with the lower end of the nozzle 6 whereby the binding rim 5 will be brought into close contact from above with the base portion of the bowl B, By this means the strainer is effectively maintained in working position and in a manner whereby it can be readily and conveniently removed and applied. The arms ID as herein disclosed are in substantial alignment with respect to the nut 9, although, of course, this could be varied.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a strainer constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated.
I claim:
A strainer of the class described, comprising a long stem, a flat disk head forming an integral part of one end of the stem, said disk having a surrounding groove in the edge thereof, an annular filtering element surrounding the head and havin its inner edge fitting in said groove, a binding rim secured to and enclosing the peripheral margin of the strainer element, a nut threaded upon the opposite end portion of the stem, and arms carried by the nut.
BEATRICE M. DEAN.
