` UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM J. HATFIELI), OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF .TO HENRY A. MILLER, OF SAME PLACE.
KNIT MITTEN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 245,066, dated August 2, 1881.
vApplication filed April 19, 1881. (No model.)
To all rwhom t't/may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. HATEIELD, of the city'of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Kuit Mittens, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates more particularly to the manufacture of mittens composed of two ro thicknesses or webs, and it has for its object to produce such mittens in a more expeditious manner than heretofore.
My invention consists of the particular con- Like letters of reference refer to like parts 2 5 in the several figures. v
A represents the blank of the hand portion. This blank is formedof a circular web which is closed at t at the end of the Wristband, wherethe webvis" commenced in knitting and 3o open at the opposite end, as shown at b. The
blank is made twice as wide as the mitten for which it is intended, so that it will form a mitten ofthe desired size when folded lengthwise.
.O represents the blank of the thumb, which 3 5 is formed of a circular web, which is closed at d, where it is commenced and open at e. This blank is also made twice as wide as the thumb for which it is intended, so that it will form a thumb ofthe required sizejby folding the blank 4o lengthwise. The blank A for the hand portion is now folded lengthwise, and its two longitudinal edges are sewed together with the exception ofthe place where the thumb is to be joined to the blank, which lis left open to 4 5 form the thumb-slit f. The thumb-blank C is also folded lengthwise, and its two longitudinal edges are sewed together with the excep, tion of the tapering portion g, which is to be connected with the hand-blank around the thumb-slit f. The thumb is then attached to 5o the hand-blank by sewing the edges of its open tapering end to the hand-blank along the edges of the thumb-slitf, and the open ends b and e of the hand portion and the thumb are closed by Sewing, whereby the mitten is completed. YThe adjoining longitudinal edges of the hand-blank andof the thumb-blank are formed by the ordinary web of the blanks and not by selvage, whereby a smooth, soft joint or seam is produced.
The circular web is produced in about the same time in which a flat web of half the width is produced, and a mitten of double thickness is thereby produced as rapidly as an ordinary mitten of single thickness. As the circular .6 5 web of the hand portion is commenced at the edge ofthe Wristband, the circular web is closed along the" edge of the Wristband, whereby a seam at that edge is avoided.
I claim as my invention- 1. The method of forming a hand portion, A, of double thickness, which consists in first knitting a circular web closed at the edge of the Wristband, then folding the web lengthwise and sewing the edges of the web together, with 7 5 the exception` of thethumb-openin g, substantially as set, forth.
2. The method of forming the thumb O of double thickness, which consists in first knitting a circular web of the required shape, then 8o folding the web lengthwise and sewing the edges together, with the except-ion of those portions which are to be sewed to the hand portion, substantially as set forth.
3. A knit mitten of double thickness, con- 85 sistin g of -a hand portion,A, and thumb G, each composedfof a circular web folded lengthwise, and having itsedges sewed together, except -around the thumbppening, where the edges of the thumb portion are sewed to the edges of 9o the web of the hand portion, substantially as set forth.
