PROTECTIVE CAP FOR woon POSTS, POLES, AND THE LIKE w. M. KERVIN Filed No v. 18, 1944 Fla-2 mvsn'rolz' KZMMZZZM Z ATTORNEYS Patented Sept. 28, 1948 OFFICE PROTECTIVE CAP FOR WOOD POSTS,
, POLES, AND THE LIKE William Martin Kervin, Montreal, Quebec, Canada Application November 18, 1944, Serial No. 564,121 In Canada March 6, 1944 1 Claim.
The invention relates to protection caps for wood poles, posts and the like, as described in the present specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings that form a part of the same.
The invention consists essentially of the novel features of construction as pointed out broadly and specifically in the claim for novelty following a description containing an explanation in detail of an acceptable form of the invention.
The objects of the invention are to protect the top of wood poles, posts and the like from the inclemencies of the weather and thereby reduce the danger of rotting of the Wood articles to be covered due to moisture of water seepage down from the top through the wood columns; to increase the life of the wood articles and thereby save considerable expense, time and material to construct caps to cover the tops of wood articles and which are self-adjusted as to diameter and formed of simple structure and easily applied; and generally to provide a cap that will be economical, durable in construction and efficient in use.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the cap.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the cap.
Figure 3 is a side elevation of one of theengaging members.
Figure 4 is a front engaging members.
Figure 5 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view of the cap as applied to the top of a pole.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the various figures.
Referring to the drawings, the cap, as indicated by the numeral l5, may be made of any suitable material such as metal, plastic, composite, seamless machine press draw, or otherwise constructed and of various sizes. The cap is provided with a crown l6, suitably shaped such as in the form of an approximate apex I1. In other words the cap is in the form of a circular skirt having a closed and an open end.
Inside the lower diameter of the cap are located a plurality of engaging members l8 having their lower ends suitably secured to the cap. These engaging members may be constructed of any elevation of one of the suitable material and are provided. with a plurality of prongs l9 projecting outwardly and upwardly therefrom and are for the purpose of engaging with the wood article to be protected. The engaging members preferably slant upwardly and inwardly from the inner and lower circumferences of the cap and consequently the engaging members thereof will grip the poles of varying diameters.
In the foregoing of the essential features is having adjustable means for holding the cap on the end of various sizes of poles or other exposed ends of wood article to be protected from weather conditions.
What I claim is:
A protection cap for wood posts, poles and the like comprising a tubular cover having a closed end and an open end and adapted to enclose the exposed end of the article to be protected, and a plurality of engaging members having fixed ends secured to the inner surface of the said cover adjacent to the open end thereof and having free ends extending inwardly and toward the closed end of said cover, and a plurality of prongs extending inwardly and toward the closed end of said cover from the inner surfaces of said engaging members and secured thereto.
