DISCHARGE NOZZLE Filed Aug. 2, 1945 I I I 5 l2 I, I3
I 9 llflllhlllllllllllill Anthony P Arno QWLLW Attorney Patented Sept. 21, 1948 DISCHARGE NOZZLE Anthony Peter Arno, United States Navy Application August 2, 1945, Serial No. 608,548
1 Claim.
(Granted under the act of March 3, 1883, as amended April 30, 1928; 370 O. G. 757) This invention relates to discharge nozzles, and is particularly directed to nozzles adapted to discharge fluids into a container without loss of fluid due to overflow.
An object of the present invention is to provide a discharge nozzle with a return flow line so that after filling a container, fluid will overflow through the return line without loss.
A further object is to provide a gasoline nozzle having a gas cap with a back flow vent line in the cap for venting to a second container when the container has been filled to capacity.
These and other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following specification when taken with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a view of the nozzle partially in section; and
Fig. 2 is a front elevational view.
As shown by the drawings, the numeral I refers to a main line which is threaded at one end 20 to receive the discharge end of a gasoline or any other fluid line, and which extends axially through the mid portion of a cap 2 being welded at its other end to a short length of flexible metal hose 3. The cap 2 consists of two parts, namely a hub 4 having an opening 6 and a cup-shaped member having an opening I, through which openings the main line I extends and is welded thereto to form a unitary leak-proof device. The hub 4 is dish-shaped and has a horizontally disposed flange 8 with bayonet type clips I I extending therefrom for engaging the inlet of the container being filled with gasoline. The cupshaped member 5 has a vertically disposed flange 9 extending outwardly from the open end of the member 5 and its circumferential portion resting against the back wall of the hub 4 to form a liquid-tight chamber ZI. A gasket may be positioned between the flange 9 and the hub 4 to form a leak-proof seal. A second gasket I0, preferably made of rubber, is positioned on the exposed side of the flange 9 which cooperates with the bayonet clips II to form a seal with the inlet of the container being filled. On the hub 4 there is a second opening I3 to which an overflow line I2 is welded. A plurality of back flow vent openings I 4 are spaced laterally along the face of the cup-shaped member 5.
In normal operation of the device, a fluid discharge line is threaded on the free end 20 of the main line I and a return line secured to the free end of the overflow line I2. The flexible hose 3 is inserted into the inlet line of the container to be filled, with a bayonet clip I I clamped over the edge of the inlet to secure the cap thereto. Fluid is then permitted to flow into the container being filled, causing the air within the container displaced by the incoming fiuid to flow outwardly through the openings I4, the chamber 2| and the overflow line I2. When the container being filled has reached its capacity the fluid will overflow through the line I2 without permitting any of the fluid to spill over. Fluid flowing through the overflow line will also serve as an indicator that the container is filled. This device may be adapted to be used for filling any tank or container and is especially useful for filling gasoline tanks where spillage creates an especially dangerous condition.
While the form of device herein shown and described constitutes a preferred form of embodiment of the present invention, it is understood that other forms might be adopted, all coming within the scope of the claim which follows.
The invention herein described may be manufactured and used by or for the Government of the United States of America for governmental purposes without the payment of any royalties thereon or therefor.
What I claim is:
A container filling discharge nozzle comprising a main line, a flexible discharge hose secured to one end of said main line, cap means axially disposed about said main line and secured thereto, said cap means comprising a hub member having an overflow vent therein and a cup-shaped member with a flange portion abutting against said hub member to form a leak-proof chamber within said cap means, means secured to said cap means arranged to cooperate with the inlet of a container being filled to attach said cap means to the inlet, said cup-shaped member having a bottom wall extending a substantial distance below said inlet securing means, said bottom wall having a plurality of openings therethrough providing a fluid escape passage to said chamber and through said overflow passage, whereby the filling of the cointainer is limited to a level below its inlet determined by the depth of said cup-shaped member and thus provide a reservoir to drain the nozzle without overflowing while said nozzle is being removed.
