In order that when pressure isapplied. all strainmayhe removed from the bearin gs which form the fulcrum of the lever B, and to secure simplicity "of constructionand ready separation of. the parts, we support this :lever by means of trunnions, whichzare supported upon suitable curved. hooks or slots. 'These trunioo nions may extend from the arm 0 on either side, as shown in the drawings at G G, and rest in curved hooks H H, extending from the under side of the arch, or may be formed from narrow stepped shoulders on the extremities of these curved hooks H H, which engage in slots or recesses cut on either side of the arm, so as to form courseways for the trunnions.
The projecting hooks may be cast in one piece with the arch, and the trunnions G G may be cast in one piece with the arm 0 of the toggle-joint. The center of motion of this arm is at the point where it bears against the under side of the arch, and consequently the center of the supporting-trunnion must be the generatrix of the arc of the bearing-surface of the slot or hook; but in order that the trunnions may be easily removed, the curve is a volute. The thickness of the upper arm from its butting-surface to the trunnions need only be sufiicient to enable the arm in one position alone to be raised up from and removed from the supporting hooks or slots, so that all necessary working positions of the arm will be permitted, and yet the parts will admit of being separated and of being expeditiously put together, and consequently the upper arm, 0, may be so short that the arch of the press will not have to be any higher than in a screw copying-press of the same size.
The lower arm of the toggle-joint is made in three partsviz., the upper butting piece or screw, H, the lower butting-piece, l, and a jacket or nut, K, which connects these two parts. The upper piece or screw, H, is a rod, which is rounded on its upper end, fits within the recess I) in the lever B, and bears against the under surface of the upper arm, 0. This arm is also supported by trunnions, which extend from each side of the screw H and bear in slots or recesses L L in the side projections, E E, of the lever B. These slots or recesses are curved in an arc whose center is the center of motion of the lever B, and are slightly wider than the diameter of the trunnions, so that when the toggle-joint is straightened the trunnions will rise up from their bearing-surfaces and thus be relieved from strain.
Instead of placing trunnions on the screw, projections which will act as trunnions may be formed upon the inner side of the side pieces, E E, and each of these projections will rest in a slot on the side of the screw, opposite to one another. The screw H fits into the jacket or nut K, and its thread engages with an internal screw-threadinthejacketornutK. Thisthread is made in any suitable manner. In the drawings it is shown as babbitted into the jacket, which is a convenient manner in small presses. Upon the outside of the jacket is a milled rim, N, by means of which it may be rotated in a horizontal plane. The lower butting-piece, I, cannot rotate when the jacket or nut K is turned, and this is effected by securing the piece I to the jacket or nut K in any suitable. manner which will accomplish this result. A
convenient method is shown in Fig. 1, which consists in attaching to the piece I a stem, at, provided with a flange, I), which, by means of Babbitt metal around the stem at, secures the piece I to the jacket or nut K, and the latter is permitted to rotate.
The platen Pis supported by means of curved hooks R R, which rest upon trunnions S S, on each side of the piece I, and which may be cast in the same piece with it or secured thereto in any suitable manner. The converse of this method of support-viz., placing trunnions or the equivalents thereof on the platen and slots or recesses on the piece I-may be used. The bearing-surfaces of the supporting hooks, slots, or recesses R R are in the curve of a volute which has for its center the center of the supporting-trunnion. I
To the under side of the lever B is attached a projection or lug, T, which bears against the lower arm of the toggle-joint below its supporting-trunnions, and this projection acts, when the lever B is depressed, to assist in straightening the joint and to increase the efi'ectiveness of the pressure, while at the same time removing strain from the trunnions.
The arch of the press may be secured to the floor of the same in any suitable manner. A desirable manner is that shown in Figs. 2 and 3, in which the arch is provided with a tenon, C, which fits within a mortise, d, on the baseplate, and is secured therein by means of a wedge-shaped key, j, which is driven through a cored opening, preferably of rectangular section, against an inclined surface, 6, on the under side of the base-plate.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-- 1. In presses or punching-machines,atogglejoint for causing the movement of the platen or punch, which toggle-joint has both of its arms supported by means of trunnions or their equivalents resting in hooks or slots, and in which the upper arm of the toggle-joint forms part of the lever which is used to straighten the joint, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In presses or punching-machines in which pressure is applied by means of a toggle-joint, trunnions or their equivalents resting in hooks or slots, and thus supporting the arms of the joint and the platen or punch, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. Slots or hooks in which the trunnions supporting the arms of the toggle-joint and the platen rest, which slots or hooks have their bearing-surfaces in arcs which have for their generating-points the centers of the supported trunnions, and which slots are slightly wider than the supported trunnions, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. The lever B, having one end enlarged, so as to form the upper arm of the toggle-joint, and provided at said end with a recess for the reception of the lower arm of the toggle'joint and with side projections having curved slots or recesses therein, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5. The combination of the lever B, construct-- ed as described, the trunnions G G, attached to said lever, the curvedhooks H H, attached to the under side of the arch and supporting said trunnions, the lower arm of the togglejoint, and trunnions attached thereto and resting in curved slots or recesses L L in the lever B, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. i
6. A toggle joint for presses or punchingmachines, having its lower arm constructed in three parts, connected as described, whereby the length of the arm may be varied as may without rotating the butting-piece I, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
8. The combination of the lower buttingpiece, I, jacket or nut K, stema, flange b, and Babbitt metal, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
9. The combination of the lower buttingpiece, I, provided with the trunnions S S, and the platen P, provided with the curved hooks R R, resting upon the trunnions, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
10. The combination, with the lever B, of the projection T, extending from the under side of said lever and bearing against the lower arm of the toggle-joint, below its supporting-trunnions, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
