To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN HAnLna, a citizen of the United States, residing at 1003 8th St. SE, Vashington, District of Columbia, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scatlold-lh'aclwts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in clamps or supports, designed primarily for scaffolds.
The object of the invention is to provide means for quickly and see' 'ely clamping a support or brace to a post.
A further object of the invention is to provide a clamp wherein a toggle action-is utilized to effect a grip between adjacent parts, the element being so disposed that the greater the weight upported. the greater will be the clamping ellicienev.
The invention also eomprehends improve ments in the details of construction and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter described and particularl; pointed out in the claims.

The numeral 1 indicates a U shap clamping member. and extending act-o same near its vertici-il endportion in a bolt 2, on which is mounted to have a alight rocking movement. a shoe jaw 13. Fitting within the free ends of the U-shape clamping member are the free ends; of a support ing U-shape member 4. a bolt 5, extending through the free ends of the two members above the horizontal centerge, as shown.
A block 6 is confined by the nupporting U-shape member near the free. ends and to one side. the pivot bolt 5.4m is secured rigidly in place by rivets or the like. show at 7. The block 6, is formed with a longitudinal threaded opening 8, disposed below the horizontal center of the U-shape support ing member, and extending therethrough is a bolt 9, the free end of which extends be yond the vertical plane of the bolt 5.
Pivoted on a bolt 10, near the outqawn d of the U-shape supporting member 4 is a combined brace and clamping membe'r 11, formed for convenience from a. single piece Speiiiflcation of Letters Patent.

The vertical member 12, cooperates with the clamping member 1 when the clamp is applied. as will later appear.

To operate the clamp. let it be supposed that it be dwircd to form a scail'old. then the U-shape clamping member 1. is slipped orer a post 20, the shoe 1 enga ing one edge. and the vertical clamping member 12 engaging the opposite edge. The bolt 9 is of course adjusted to set the vertical member 12 with reference to the shoe. to form sutiicicnt hpace for the post. The clamp haw ing been adjusted to lbc deaired height on the post. the latch in now thrown down and he conta ting m'i'ace on the free end eugages the edge of the poo. and the leverage thrown on the pivot bolt in a ts to tilt the U-shapc supporting member on the pivot bolt 5 and the end of the adjusting bolt 9 is forced into engagement with the vertical the post, and the vertical member 122 against the opposite edge of said post, thereby causing a clamping action. frame 21. is placed on the top of the U-shape suppor ng member. the weight of same coupled 1th that of a worlnnan. serves to increase the clamping aetion on the post. In fact the greater the weight on the supporting member, the more etlicicnt will be the clamping action. Furthermore as the boards 21, rest on the latch, they act to prevent the latch becoming disengaged, should it for any reason work out of with the edge of the post.

While I have shown my improved elamp as applied to a post to support a seal'i'old board. it is evident its use is in no wise limited in this regard, as it is intended that the device be employed wherever it be de sired to clamp members together.

A clamp comprising a pair of U-shape members having their ends interlitting one within the other, a pivot bolt connecting the interfitting ends above the horizontal eenter of said members, a block intone of said members, said block having a threaded opening transverse to and out of the phone of the pivot bolt, an adjusting screw in the threaded opening, and a combined brace and jaw pivoted in one of the members and havin its endarrangtal to be engaged by the a justir 'g serew, whereby when the member carrying the adjusting screw is tilted in one direetioti on its pivot the screw will engage the jaw and form with the companion member a grip on a post held therebetween.
