This invention relates to planers, and is cncerned with an effective, relatively simple construction for the vertical adjustment of a planer bed over which the boards planed are moved and fed, and which at their upper sides are planed usually by l a rapidly rotating cutter or cutters which are fixed in vertical position. the bed being vertically adjustable with respect thereto for difierent thicknesses of lumber which are to be processed.
It is a primary object and purpose of the present invention to greatly simplify the vertical adjusting and holding mechanism which has been previously used, and to get a greater range or distance of vertical adjustment, also an elimination of looseness or lost motion and other-factors disturbing such adjustment, and to generally provide a more effective, simpler andmore certain and accurate adjustment of the table than has heretofore been attained. More specifically the invention is directed to a practical and efiective hydraulic means of adjustment readily controllable as to extent and also as to the speed with which the position of the adjustable table may be altered.
An understanding of the invention may be had from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which,

Like reference characters refer to like, parts in the different figures of the drawings.
In the construction a heavy supporting base 8, shown as of rectangular form, has guide posts 2 cylindrical in form extending upwardly one at each corner of the base and permanently and rigidly secured at their lower end portions in heavy vertical cylindrical bosses 3 integral with the base I. The frame of the planer includes vertical sides 4 spaced from each other and connected by transverse horizontal frame members 5 and B of channel form, as shown.
Between the sides l of the frame and near their upper edges a rotating cutter cylinder 1 of conventional construction may be mounted for rotation between horizontal rotatable pressing rollers 8 which bear against the upper side of lumber fed through the machine and with the usual side chip breaker bars, etc., 9 between which the cylindrical planing cutter I is located, and having the conventional covering guard l0 'fragmentarily shown in Fig. 1. The detail of mounting and driving and of other construction need not be entered into as this is old and well known in planers.
A horizontal table support ll, adjacent corner portions thereof, has downwardly extending cylindrical guide sleeves it which telescope over the guide posts 2. The regular lower rollers it, one under each of the rollers 8 are carried by this table support H and over the upper side of such table support the immediate table it for passage of the lumber processed thereover is secured, with the necessary openings for the upper portions of the rollers i3.
A piston rod it extends downwardly from the central portion of the table i i. It passes through the closed upper end of a cylinder it, the lower end of which is connected to and closed by the base i as shown, and has a piston ii at its lower end within the cylinder. It is apparent that by the introduction of a pressure fluid into a selected end of the cylinder with exhaust of such fluid from the other end of the cylinder, the table may be raised or lowered in accordancewith the selection of which end of the cylinder the pressure fluid is introduced.
With my invention the pressure fluid preferably is a liquid, such as oil or any other equivalent liquid, a supply of which is contained in a tank l8 mounted at the upper side of the base i to one side of the cylinder it. The oil is withdrawn from said tank through a conduit pipe iii and leads to a rotary pump 2! driven by a motor 21!, the liquid being forced under pressure through an outlet pipe 22 to a valve housing 23 which contains a regulating valve, manually operable to regulate the amount of the pumped liquid which will pass to the two pipes 24 and 25, the latter of which returns to the tank it. Thus while the pump will pump a continuous volume or supply of liquid the portion thereof wanted for doing the desired work in adjusting the table vertically as hereinafter described is regulated by the valve, such work doing portion following the pipe housing or other similar conduit 2 and any excess being returned to the tank 18.
The pipe 24 leads to a control valve 26 preferably mounted at a proper height on the frame member 6. From such control valve two pipes or conduits 2'! and 28 lead to the upper and. lower ends, respectively, of cylinder It. An exhaust pipe 29 also leads therefrom back to the tank I8.
The control valve in the housing 25 is manually operated so that the oil or other liquid pumped under pressure through the pipe 25 may be selectively directed through either the pipe 21 or 28 to the upper or to the lower endof the piston. When directed through the pipe 28 to the lower end of the cylinder, piston ll, rod l5 and the table are elevated and the exhaust of oil or other liquid above the piston is through the pipe 21 and housing 26 and thence back to the tank It through the return pipe 29. In another position of the control valve the liquid is forced through pipe 21 to the upper end of the cylinder, forcing the piston downward and the exhaust is through the pipe 23 and the return pipe 29 back to the tank.
The construction described is very practical and is sure, certain and accurate in the adjustments of the table which are made, The guiding of the table by the guide posts 2 and sleeves l2 maintains the table accurately in proper horizontal position. The speed of vertical movement of the table in either direction, up or down, may be regulated by the regulatin valve at 23. Liquids being to all practical purposes incompressible, the table is held with certainty and in any position to which adjusted. The extent of over-all adjustment which may be made is anything within 'the permissible range of vertical movement of and is to be considered comprehensive of all forms of structure coming within their scope.
I claim:
1. In a construction as described, a horizontal base of substantially rectangular form, vertical guide posts connected to and extending upwardly, one at each corner of the base, vertical supporting ends spaced from each other and connected with said base, a horizontal rotary planer cutter mounted on and between said supporting ends at their upper portions, a horizontal table between said supporting ends located below the planer cutter, downwardly extending vertical guide sleeves on the table, one for each post, telescopically receiving the upper end portions of said posts, hydraulic piston-cylinder means having a fixed connection and mounting relative to the base, means for pumping liquid under pressure, means for conducting said liquid selectively to either end of the cylinder of said means and for carrying liquid away from the cylinder at the oppbsite end, manually operable means for controlling the selected end of the cylinder to which the liquid is carried, and operative means for raising and lowering said horizontal table and the guide sleeves carried thereby in conformity with the end of the piston to which said liquid is pumped under pressure.
2. A construction as defined in claim 1, and manually operated means for regulating the portion of the liquid pumped which shall be carried to the selected end of the cylinder.
3. In a construction as described, a horizontal base of substantially rectangular form, a centrally disposed cylinder secured to said base, vertical guide posts connected to and extendin upwardly, one at each corner of the base, vertical supporting ends spaced from each other and connected with said base, a horizontal rotary planing cutter mounted on and between said supporting ends at their upper portions, a horizontal table between said ends of the supports located below the cutter, downwardly extending vertical guide sleeves on said table telescopically receiving the upper end portions of said posts, a piston within the cylinder, a vertical piston rod extending therefrom through the upper end of the cylinder and connected with said table, means for pumping liquid under pressure, means for conducting said liquid selectively to either end of the piston and for carrying liquid away from said cylinder at the opposite side of the piston, and manually operable means for controlling the selected end of the cylinder to which the fluid is carried.
4. A construction as defined in claim 3, and manually operated means for'regulating the portion of the liquid pumped which shall be carried to the selected end of the cylinder.
