Description

Patented Sept. 7, 1948 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE BILLIARD CUE TIP FILE.
Grigsby J. Fleshman, Oak Hill, W. Va.
Application June 17, 1946, Serial No. 677,315
1 Claim. l
This invention relates to files and more particularly to a ille which is particularly adapted for roughing the leather tip of a billiard cue.
An object of this invention is to provide a billiard cue tip ille which will roughen the surface of a leather cue tip without pulling and tearlng it and which is designed to be self-cleaning and will not become clogged `by particles of leather from the cue tip.
Another object of this invention is to provide a billiard cue tip ille which is formed of a series of parallel toothed blades, each tooth being pyramidal so as to provide a relatively ilne illing groove.
Yet another object of this invention is to provide a billiard cue tip ille having a series oi parallel toothed blades and a deep groove between the blades, the groove between the blades being substantially greater than the groove between successive teeth on the same blade to prevent the Illing grooves from becoming clogged.
Still another object of this invention is to provide a ille of this kind which maybe made in one piece, or built up from a series of parallel blades ilxed together to form a ille.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the arrangement, combination and details of construction disclosed in the drawings and specification, and then more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings, wherein similar reference characters designate similar parts throughout the respective views,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a ille constructed according to an embodiment of my invention,
Figure 2 is a vertical section taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a side elevation. broken away, of an end of the file,
Figure 4 is a vertical section of a modli'led form of this invention.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral III designates generally a billiard cue tipiile constructed according to an embodiment of my invention. The ille I0 is formed of a series of parallel blades II fixed together in side abutting relation by welding as I2, or they may be secured together by screws or rivets, or any other suitable means for holding a series of blades rpyramidal teeth Il on each blade II.
Thus, when a number of blades II are secured together by welding I2 or any suitable attaching means, there is formed a ille I0 having parallel 2 series of toothed blades II, the teeth Il of each blade so formed that there is formed a series oi relatively deep longitudinal grooves I8 and finer transverse filing grooves I9 at right angles to the grooves I8, whereby the cutting action of the `teeth I1 will remain free from the clogging particles of leather removed from the cue tip, the particles being free to move from the finer illing grooves I9 to the deeper longitudinal grooves I6 from which may fall freely from the ille I0.
Such illes are adapted for use in a billiard parlor where there are many such cue tips that require constant care, and so for attaching the ille I0 to a suitable cord there is provided a ring 20 which may be attached to the ille I0 through a suitable opening 2| in one end oi the blades Il.
In Figure 4 there is shown a modiiled form of file. This ille 22 is formed 4of an elongated rectangular body 24 having a series of parallel triangular grooves 25 longitudinally of the body 2l 0n one side thereof and a series -of parallel illing grooves 26 at right angles to the grooves 25, transversely of the body 24, resulting in substantially the same file as shown in Figures 1 to 3.
I do not mean to confine myself to the exact details of construction herein disclosed, but claim all variations falling within the purview of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
A cue tip ille comprising a body comprising a series of longitudinally extending parallel cutting blades, each of said blades having a cutting edge of triangular cross section forming a series of parallel spaced apart Ilozngitudinal grooves between each of said blades, said blades formed with triangular teeth along the upper edge thereof, the teeth of adjacent blades being aligned transversely of said body forming a series of transverse longitudinally spaced apart pyramidal teeth on said body, said longitudinal grooves being of a depth greater than the height oi said teeth whereby material removed by said teeth may pass freely from said ille.
GRIGSBY J. FLESHMAN.
