TYPEWRITER PAGE END INDICATOR Emmett A. Randolph, La Grange, Tex. Application March 14, 1946, Serial No. 654,453 a claims. (Cl. isi- 189) The invention relates to a new typewriter page endin-dicator which will givea setting for any amount of margin at the bottom of paper'being typed on and vgive an audible signal when the selected margin is reached. It affords more emcien-t typing, and banishes the guessing of Vmargin or trouble of typing too yclose to bottom of paper.l The bottom margin rset is operated in connection wi-th ya, small gear placed on the knob shaft of the platen and the -setting is not effected by any amount of forward or backward turning of the platen within the complete -typing area of the paper. The bottom ma-rgin set is designed to allow continued turning of the platen in ely-ther direction even after the setting or signal has been reached, and does not interfere with any movements of the typewriter.
One form of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure `1 is a side elevational sectional View of the page end indicator attachment according to Ithe present invention Figure 2 is an end elevational view, with parts broken away, of the indicator attachment shown in Figure 1.

The mounting plate I holds. the bottom margin set mechanism. The bracket' 2 which is attached to the mounting plate I is vfor mounting the assembly to the typewriter. The entire mechanism, with the exception of the bell and the clapper assembly, revolves in the bearing 32 in mountingplate I. The large gear 6 turns with the shaft 8. Shaft 8 is held in the bearing 32 by the gear 6 and the flange 4 which is held to the end of shaft 8 with screw 5. The small gear 3 on the platen knob shaft of the typewriter meshes with and drives gear 6. All parts revolve on shaft 8 except the gear 3. Dial plate 'I is driven by the friction from the friction plate I6 against the gear 6. Thi-s friction is sucient to turn the mechanism to trip the signal clapper, but not enough to interfere with the continued turning of gear 6 `or the platen on the typewriter. Dial plate 'I and the setting plate Il) travel only between the -two stops 33, 34 carried by the mounting plate. The nut 20 is adjusted to give suilicient pressure against the pressure plate I6, and
the nut 20 is locked by screw 2|. When the setting mechanism dial plate 1 and setting plate I 0 reaches either of stops 33, 34 ythe pressure is not great enough to apply any noticeable amount of friction gon or against gear 6 thereby allowing continued turning of the platen on the typewriter, gear 3 and gear 6 with practically no added effort.
Dial plate 'I has attached to it the segmental ange I5 Vhaving graduations thereon, knob 35. and the index plate 9 as is shown in Figure 4. Plate 9 has many index holes for receiving pin I4 in setting for ya desired margin at the bottom of the paper. The lever 40 is attached to the setting plate I0. The setting plate I0 h-as on it a trippingmember or pin I2 in position to trip the bell clapper 26 in giving I'the signal that the desired margin is reached. On the lever 40 is the pointer I3 which is in position over the graduated segmen-tal flange I5 of the dial plate l. Washer I9 is Iplaced between the nut 2D and the setting plate IIJ.
When setting, the paper is 4turned until there i-sv about a 11/2 inch top margin, and the setting for the bottom margin is then made by exerting a. slight outward pressure against the knob II of the lever 40 and moving it to the desired point on the graduated flange I5. On the release of knob II, the pin I4 enters a hole in the index plate 9 which makes a permanent setting for the same amount of margin on the same size of paper. Immediately after this setting with knob II knob 35 is pushed back to stop 34. The machine is now ready'to type and the signal will sound when. the selected bottom margin is reached. The knob II is not changed or pushed anymore unless 'changing for a different margin or a different size paper. If not making any change in the paper size or margin, the next sheet of paper is merely placed as before and the knob 35 is pushed back to stop 34 and the signal will sound as the same bottom margin is reached.
Pin I2 is in a position on plate I0 so that when the knobs II and 35 are on an even line with each other and as they are moved to stop 33 the bell will ring a little before the knobs II and 35 touch the stop 33. The setting of the pointe-r I3 is always between the knob 35 and the stop 33. As shown in Figure 3, the bolt 24 is designed to hold the part 29 and the -trip piece 28 with the nut 3I screwed down only enough to allow the part 2B and the trip -piece 28 to move freely on the shaft of bolt 24. The bell clapper 26 is attached to the part 29 by the rod 30. A small spring 21 is attached to the point 31 of the trip piece 23 and to the part 29 at the point where the cl'apper rod 3i! is attached. The spring 21 allows the ltrip point 31 to b-e pushed back by pin I2 when it goes back to its starting position. The shoulder 36 on the trip piece 28, when the paper is nearing the bottom margin, catches against the clapper piece 26 up from the bell 22 until the pin I2travels far enough to allo-wthe point '31' to :return toits original position, whereupon the bell lclapper 26 falls on the bell 22 making a signal that the desired margin is reached. The bell 22 could be of a. different tone, or be replacedby'agong to distinguish the bottom margin signal from `ide or the regular margin bell.` Figure 1, the hole i1 in the mountingf plate Vl holds the bell bracket 23 and the bell 22, while As yshownV in' 2Q :and raises clapper the hole i8 in the mounting plate l holds the clapper 26 and the :trip assembly.
