UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHRISTIAN J. DEYHLE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
REFRACTING APPARATUS FOR USE WITH AN ILLUMINATING-BllRNER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 244,798, dated July 26, 1881.
' Application filed April 14, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN J. DEYHLE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Refract-mg Apparatus for use with an Illuminating-Burner, which improvement if fully set forth in the following specification and accompanyingdrawings, in which- Figure lis a face view of the apparatus embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view thereof. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of a modification.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding portions in the several figures.
My invention consists of a water-lens adapted to concentrate light, the same being adjustably mounted so as to direct the light with the best efl'ect to the desired place, and constructed and arranged substantially as hereinafter set forth.
The device, being portable, will be found serviceable for machinists, shoe-makers, and others.
, Referringtothedrawings,Arepresentsaglass bottleorhollowtransparentbodyofdouble-convex form, but other forms may be adopted. To opposite side edges of the body A are attached clamps or clips B, which conform to the curvature of said edges, and embrace the same above and below the center, and fitted to said clips are screws or bolts (3, which are moiinted on arms D, thus providing the horizontal axis of said body.. The arms D are of 'curved or angular form, and 'their lower ends are united to a stem, E, which is fitted in the I boss or tubular portion F of a stand, G, which latter supports the device, said boss having a set-screw, H, for holding the stem E.
In order to prevent downward displacement of the body A from the clips B,the lower ends of the clips have connected to them a strip, J,
of metal or other suitable flexible material which allows the ready application of the clips to the body A, and serves to sustain said body object to be illuminated, thedevice beingreadily handled. The light will be concentrated on the object, as is evident, to accomplish which the body or lens requires to be adjusted so as to properly receive the light and transmit the same with the best efl'ect to the desired place. For this purpose the body may be turned on its journals, screws, or axis 0 and set at various angles, or rotated on the stem E as a vertical axis, and-raised or lowered by said stem, itbeing held in its angular position by jamnuts I), which are fitted on the screws 0 and tighten against the arms D. The stem is held by the set-screw H, as has been stated.
As the body A is tightly corked the escape of the contents is prevented in any position of the body; but it may be opened when desired for access to the water, replenishing, &c.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The clips B, fitted to the body A at the point of axial attachment,in combination with the flexible strip J, which extends from one clip to the other, under the lens, substantially as set forth.
2. The lens-body A, provided with the lugs a, in combination with clips B, arranged to come in contact with said lugs, and thus prevent rotation, substantially as set forth.
CHRISTIAN J. DEYHLE.
