RINDING-Mint.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 24,473, dated June 21, 1859.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, J. C. LYoNs, of Auburn, in the county of Cayuga and State of New York, and HENRY F. PHILLIPS, of Seneca Falls, in the county of Seneca and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Grinding-Mill and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which Figure 1, represents a vertical central longitudinal section of a grinding mill constructed according to our improvement, and Fig. 2, is a detached plan or top view of the lower half of the case which contains the grinding apparatus.

To enable others skilled in the art to fully understand, use and construct our invention we will proceed to describe it.
A, is a box, on the top of which a case B, is rigidly attached, which forms the bearings for a shaft C, to which the grinding cone ,,D, and the corn cracker E, are rigidly attached. Corn is introduced to the cracker by means of a funnel F, and a hopper box G, serves to bring cracked corn wheat or coarse meal on the grinding cone in order to reduce it to the required fineness. The hopper is agitated by a vibrating lever H, which receives motion by means of an eccentric a, which is rigidly attached to the shaft C, and which gives motion to a rod (2, which is pivoted with its lower end to the side of the box A, and the upper end of which forms a fork c, which embraces the end of the lever H. From the grinding apparatus the meal passes in a smutting cylinder I, and after having been cleaned from all impurities it is discharged at the bottom of the box A, and the impurities pass out by a tube a.
The shaft 0, extends on both sides beyond the case B, from which bosses f, extend on both sides so as to form proper bearings for the shaft, and a collar cl, is rigidly attached to the shaft beyond the boss f, and at such a distance from the same, that the shaft has suflicient play in a longitudinal direction between the grinding cone D, and between this collar. The boss f, is provided with a screw thread over which a screw 6, screws which is cut in the interior of the hub of a hand wheel J, which fits loosely over the shaft C, and outside of this hand wheel a ring g, is slipped over the shaft which can be confined in any position on the same by means of a set screw it, so that the hand wheel J, can be confined on the shaft between the ring 9, and the collar d, leaving the same free however to rotate in either direction. In order to prevent the hand wheel J, from turning spontaneously the,
hub of the same is confined in a clasp 2', which slides on a -pin j, which is attached to the side of the box A, and if this clasp is drawn up to the hub by means of a screw 70, the hand wheel J, is kept rigid without being able to rotate or to move either way.
K, is the shell into which the grinding cone works, and this shell is secured to the case B, by means of screws Z, so that in case the shell is worn out, that it can be replaced by a new one without making it necessary to throw away the whole case, and at the same time it enables us to use hard metal for the grinding shell and soft metal for the case, so that it is less trouble to fit it up. The shell L, of the corn cracker is also made of a separate piece from the case and it slides in the cavity M. A rod m, which 1s rigidly attached to this shell, extends through the case B, and through the side of the box A, and it bears a fork n, which embraces a double flanged pulley 0, which is rigidly attached to the shaft C. By giving a longitudinal motion to this shaft, therefore the shell L, is drawn along and kept in the proper position without injuring the teeth of the corn cracker E. By this arrangement all those parts which require oiling, are kept outside of the case B, so that not only they are less liable to be filled up with dust or meal but they can easily be kept clean and well oiled all the time, and the shaft C, extends on both sides beyond the case B, so that a balance wheel N, may be attached to one end and the fast and loose pulleys O, to the other, and that the weight attached to one side of the shaft counterbalances the weight attached to the other side.
Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
