P. H. GERRITS GOLF CLUB GRIPPERS Filed Jan. 25, 1947 Paw! H.6 errz'zs Patented Aug. 17, 1948 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE GOLF CLUB GRII'PER Paul H, Gerrits, Appleton, Wis. Application January 23, 1947, Serial No. 723,792
1 Claim. (01. 273--35) This invention relates to golf games and more particularly a golf club gripper or stabilizer.
The primary object of this invention resides in the provision of a golf club gripper adapted to be secured in one hand of a golf player so as to retain his golf club in adjusted position and thereby improve his playing of the game.
Another object of this invention resides in the provision of a golf club gripper adapted to be secured in the palm of one hand of the golf player so as to tightly engage the handle of his golf club and thereby retain the head of the golf club in predetermined adjusted position for striking the golf ball and causing it to follow an approximate straight line toward the goal elected by the player.
A further object of this invention resides in the provision of a golf club gripper adapted to prevent the handle of a golf clug from rotating in the hand of the golf player after being adjusted.
A still further object of this invention resides in the provision of a golf club gripper adapted to eliminate longitudinal rocking of the upper end of the golf club handle in the hands of the golf player upon impact of the head thereof with the golf ball.
With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of elements to be hereinafter more fully set forth in the specification, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claim and although this disclosure depicts my present conception of the invention, the right is reserved to resort to such changes in construction and arrangement of elements as come within the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application:
Fig. 1 is a face view of the gripper fastened to the palm of the hand of a golf player and showing the upper portion of a golf club fastened thereto.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the gripper.
In the present illustration of this invention the numeral 4 designates, in general, a golf club gripper or stabilizer consisting of a substantially yoke-shaped base member 5 formed of leather, buckskin or any suitable material into substantially triangular configuration having its apex or staff portion provided with a finger receiving loop or portion 6 and the base portion of the same cut out as at 7 to form leg portions 8 to which is attached a gripping strap 9 adjustably secured around the hand transversely of a golf player through the instrumentality of a buckle In or other suitable adjusting means. That portion 9' of the strap overlying the cut out portion of the base member 5 is sufiiciently arched to permit the upper handle portion of a golf club to be inserted beneath the same for tightening it against the triangular base member retained within the palm of the players hand by the aforesaid adjusting buckle.
Although the preferred form of the gripper or stabilizer is constructed along the aforesaid lines, it is to be understood that it is within th purview of this invention to vary the design thereof without departing from the salient features of the device just so the alterations thereof do not affect the utility of the same.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
A golf club gripper comprising a substantially triangular shaped body portion adapted to be disposed in contact with the palm of a hand with one apex of said triangular body portion being adjacent the index finger and the base of the same extending across the heel of said palm, an index finger surrounding loop at said apex of the body portion, a portion of the body portion adjacent the loop extending between the crotch formed by the thumb and index finger of a hand, said portion providing a bearing surface for the shaft of a golf club, said body portion having a notch formed in its base portion, the base of said body portion havin a loop extending across said notch and laterally from the sides of said body portion, said loop being of sufiicient size to form a securing loop disposed about the heel end of the hand, and said notch and the portion of the loop extending thereacross being adapted to encircle the shaft of a golf club handle.
