ATTORNEYS Patented Aug. 17, 1948 UNlTED STATES PATENT OFFICE TURBINE William J. Pugh, East Lynn, Mass. Application August 13, 1945, Serial No. 610,550
1 Claim.
My present invention, in its broada-spect, has reference to improvements in raising and lowering turbine casings in relation to a fixed turbine, and more particularly it is my purpose to provide a simple, sturdy, efficient and practical raising and lowering mechanism which will properly support and sustain the weight of the turbine casing and lend to its'handling without excess exertion or labor.
Other and equally important objects and advantages of rnyvinvention will be apparent from the following description and drawings, and it is pointed out that changes in form, size, shape, materials, and construction and arrangement of parts is permissible and within the purview of my broad inventive concept, and the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawings, wherein I have illustrated a preferred form \of my invention:
Figure 1 is a side elevation;
Figure 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Figure 1, and V Figure 3 is a fragmentary front view.
In the drawings, wherein like characters of reference are used to designate like or similar parts throughout the several views:
The numeral I designates a dam across a body of Water A, which dam may be made of wood, concrete, or any other suitable material, and the form of dam shown is simply for purposes of illustration. It has supports 2. The water level is shown at 3 and the Water level of the tail Water is shown at 4. A fixed turbine having a shaft 5, is provided with a casing 6, which is movable in vertical relation to the fixed turbine. A slidable gate 1 is shown extending about the casing of the dam and the casing is mounted with its gate at the water level 3 and its mouth at the level of the tail water 4. The casing 6 is provided with an opening 9 rearwardly of the gate 1 and adjustment of the gate with regard to the opening determines the amount of flow to the casing or the flow may be discontinued by completely closing the opening 9 in the casing. Carried about the casing 6 and by the dam is a sleeve 8, the an of which corresponds to the angle of the dam, and the sleeve is provided with vertical side slots l through which the vertical and angularly disposed racks II of the casing 6 extend to present their toothed faces at either side of the casing to be engaged by cogs l2 mounted on ang-ularly opposed shafts 13, which are supported by depending brackets l4 and attached by bolts It to the dam. The ends of the shafts t3 extend to points the turbine so that the opening 9 is in a position adjacent each other and carry beveled gears H, which intermesh with beveled gears P8 in a vertical operating shaft l9, mounted in a sleeve 20, attached to the dam. The shaft I9 has a hand wheel 21, and a steady bracket 22 supports the sleeve in place. By these means, simple turning of the hand wheel 21 raises and lowers the turbine casing 6, and the turbine casing may be raised by the rack and pinion and the locking pin 23 inserted in the sleeve 20 and shaft l9 to lock the turbine casing in place when the turbine is used to convey power through a shaft, or pulley, or belt for any distance from the unit.
In use the casing 6 is moved with relation to relative to the water lever 3 of the water A. Since the turbine remains within the casing at all times, the height of the casing opening 9 will depend upon the mean level of the water. The travel of the sleeve is limited by the position of the turbine. The casing thus permits Water to flow into the casing through the opening 9 regardless .of the water level, since the casing is moved in relation to the water level.
There has thus been provided a movable casing which, regardless of the level of the Water, is enabled, through its operating mechanism, to permit the water to enter the casing through the opening provided in the casing.
From the foregoing, it is believed that the operation and advantages of my invention will be apparent, but it is again emphasized that interpretation of its scope should only be conclusive when made in the light of the s b-join d claim- I claim:
The combination of a fixed turbine, a casing for the turbine which is movable in vertical relation to said turbine and a support for the casing having an inclined upper surface, a sleeve carried by the support, said sleeve having the upper edge thereof corresponding to the inclined upper surface of the support and extending beyond the upper surface of the support, an inlet opening in the casing above the support, a sliding gate on the casing over the opening adapted to vary the diameter of the opening, a pair of racks on the casing, supporting brackets, on said support, an operating shaft carried by the brackets, a pair of operating shafts carried byv the brackets at a right angularly outwardly inclined relation to said first operating shaft, cogs on the ends of said pair of operating shafts engaging the racks on the casing, pinions on the first operating shaft, pinions on the pair of operating shafts engaging with the 4 REFERENCES CITED The following references are of record in the file of this patent:
