UNITED STATES i PATENT OFFICE 1 -JAMEs-I. BEYNoLDs, oFKANsAs CITY, MIssoUR.
LoosE PLLEY FoR sEwlNG-MAcHl-NES.
SPECIFICATON forming' part of Letters Patent No. 244,671, dated July 19, 1881. i Appnafion fiiaapn'i v11, 1881. (Modem i To all whom tt may concern:
Be it known that vI, JAMES I. REYNoLDs, of Kansns City, county of Jackson, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and usefnl Improvements in Loose Pulleys for Sewing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in` which- Figure lis a perspective'view of the parts of my device separated from each other. Fig. 2 is alike view of said parts combined, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same, a portion of thewheel being broken away to show the arrangement of the spring-pawl.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
The design of my iuvention is to enable the driving-wheel ofa serving-machine to be easily and cheaply arranged to revolve loosely upon i its shaft when turned in a backward `direction; and to this end it consists in the construction and combination of the parts of the device, substantially as and for the purpose liereinafter specified. v
In the annexed drawings, A represents the driving-shaft, and B the driving-pulley, of a serving-machine, which pulley is loosely journaled u'pon a rcduced portionat one end of said shaft. The end o'f the shaft A is flush With or extends but slightly beyond the outer face of the hub b of the Wheel B, and npon said end is placed a metal disk or washer, O, which is Secured thereon by means of'a screw, D, that passes axiallyinto` said .shaft through an opening at the center of said disk. A pin,
` a, extends outward from the end of the shaft A intoan opening, c, that is provided inthe disk 0,1ocks the latter to said shaft, and
causes said parts to rotate together independent of the wheel B Upon its inner face the disk O is provided with a circumferential incline, that terminates in ashoulder, c', similar to the tooth of a ratchet-wheel, and is engaged by a pawl, E, which is eontained within a recess, bl, that is formed in the hub b of the wheel B, said pawl being arranged to move longitudinally in a line with the shaft A, and being held with va -yielding pressure outward against said disk by means'of a spiral spring, F, which is placed within said recess, and a-t its outer end engages with a head or enlargement, e, that is formed upon said If, now, the wheel pawl near its outer end. B is rotated in one direction, the pawl E will engage with the shoulder or tooth c' of the disk O and cause the latter and the shaft A to rcvolve in the same direction; but if said .a shoulder or tooth, c', is provided -upon each face of the disk O, and said teeth arranged in opposite directions, while the opening c is lengthened radially, so that to place the mechanism in position it is only necessary the wheel B be loosened upon its shaft A, a round opening, b', drilled for the reception of the pawl E and spring F, and another opening provided in the end of said shaft for the reception of the dovvel-pinl` a, all of which can be done by any ordinary mechanic in a few minutes of time.
I am aware that d riving-wheels or loose pulleys have before been connected with shafts by means of spring-pawls, and therefore do not claim the same, broadly.
Having thus fully set forthpthe nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new As a means' for connecting together the sha-ft A and wheel B,so as to cause the latter to move the former when rotated in one direction, the disk O, provided with the Opening c and shoulder or tooth o', the pin a, projecting from said shaft into said Opening c, the screw D, passingthrough saidv disk into said shaft, and the spring-pawl E,contained within a recess in the hub of said wheel and adapted to engage with said shoulder c', said parts being combined to operate in the manner and for the purpose substantiall y as specified.
Witness my hand this January 24th, 1881.
