ere n-t olle m rl it a ai s i tl th of which it may move lengthwise of the shoe relatively to the wiper carrier in response to pressure of the upper thereon in. the upwiping operation. It will be evident that in some aspects involving the use of difierent means for performing the upwiping operation and the wiping of the upper inwardly over the insole respectively the invention is not limited in utility to the lasting of shoes of the type herein shown, but is applicable, for example, to the lasting of welt shoes where a portion of the upper is pressed by the wipers against a lip on the insole.
For purposes of this invention also the abovementioned abutment device against which a portion of the lasting margin of the upper is pressed by the wipers is associated with means for positioning the shoe heightwise thereof by engagement with the insole and is movable relativel to this positioning means in directions heightwise of the shoe to permit it to adjust itself to the shoe, additional means being provided for positioningthe shoe lengthwise and laterally. In the construction shown the device is so positioned and controlled as to serve additionally as a holddown for the margin of the insole at the end of the toe to prevent displacement of that portion of the insole in the lasting operation. From its initial position where it serves that purpose it is pushed inwardly lengthwise of the shoe by the wipers against the resistance of a spring until it is positively stopped at the proper distance from the end of the toe to serve as an abutment in the manner above described. In its inward movement over the insole the device has the additional function of a retarder, insuring that the upper about the end of the toe will be wiped tightly and smoothly over the insole by the wipers. In this aspect, in the construction herein shown, the device supplements the action of another retarder which is substituted for the grippers disclosed in the previously mentioned Letters Patent and clamps the marginal portion of the upper outspread on the upwiping plate to apply a pull to the upper and to control it in the upwiping operation.
Since the insole of a shoe of the type above referred to has no lip by engagement with which the shoe may be positioned lengthwise and laterally in the manner disclosed in th previously mentioned Letters Patent, the invention further provides novel means for positioning the shoe in these respects. The construction herein shown includes for this purpose an end gage and side gages arranged to serve as shoe-positioning abutments opposite the end and side faces of the toe-end portion of the last respectively, and also other gages arranged to engage the opposite sides of the forepart of the shoe in locations farther heelward than its toe-end portion. These other gages, as also the toe side gages, areconnected together for equal movements toward or from each other and are arranged to be forced apart by wedging action of the shoe thereon when the sho is presented to the machine, the position of the shoe lengthwise being determined by contact of the end gage with the toe-end face of the last. In the course of the operation of the machine the there toe gages are withdrawn from their operative positions by novel means operated by the movement of the wiper carrier heightwise of the last while the other gages remain in their shoe-engaging positions.

For positioning a shoe heightwi se relatively to the toe-lasting means the machine herein shown is provided with means corresponding generally to the disclosure of Letters Patent No. 2,385,414, granted on September 25, 1945, on an application of mine. That is, there is mounted in a top frame casting 2 a vertical rod 4 which is adjustably movable upwardly or downwardly by a member 6 confined for turning movement on a diametrically reduced upper end portion of the rod and threaded in the frame casting. Formed on the lower end of the rod is a head 6 (Fig. 12) on which is supported a block 18 having fast thereon three downwardly extending pins l2 (Fig. 13) the lower end. faces of which are arranged to engage the bottom face of the forepart of the insole, one of j .thefpins engaging it comparativelynear the'iend "i' oi-the toe and the others farther iroin' the end of the toe in locations spaced apart -widthwis'e' of the shoe." That is, in presenting the shoe to the machine and moving it lengthwise toward the end gage 32 and between the toe side gages 34 the operator tips its heel end upwardly to cause the portion of its forepart which is located farther heelward than its toe-end portion to enter the space between the side gages 88 and to spread these gages.
After the shoe has been clamped against the pins I2 by the toe rest 30 in the position determined by the pins and by the several gages, and after a heel rest (not shown) has been moved into engagement with the heel-end face of the shoe as disclosed in Letters Patent No. 2,160,846 to assist in holding the shoe against lengthwise displacement, the toe end of the shoe is lasted by means which will now be described. For wiping the lasting margin of the upper inwardly over the insole the machine is provided with a pair of wipers II4 (Figs. 2 and 3) supported on wiper holders I I6 which are guided for movements in curved paths on a wiper carrier II 8 to close the wipers inwardly widthwise of the shoe as disclosed in the last-mentioned Letters Patent. As also therein disclosed, the wiper carrier is supported for movements to advance and retract the wipers lengthwise of the shoe on a pair of swinging links I28, these links being spaced apart widthwise of the shoe and being pivotally connected at their upper ends to the front end portion of the carrier, and on the upper end of a lever I22 pivotally connected by a pin I24 to the rear end portion of the carrier and mounted between its upper and lower ends on a fulcrum pin I 26. The upper arm of the lever I22 thus serves, in effect, as a link substantially parallel to the links I20. The two links I20 are pivotally connected at their lower ends to arms I28 fast on a rockshaft I30, and also fast on this rockshaft is an arm I32 provided with a roll I34 which lies in a cam track I36 formed in a cam member I38 fast on a cam shaft I48. Through this mechanism the wiper carrier I I8 is swung upwardly about the pin I24 for wiping the toe end of the upper heightwise of the last, this upwiping operation in the machine herein shown being performed by means other than the wipers II4, as more particularly hereinafter described. To advance and retract the wiper carrier lengthwise of the shoe the lever I22 is swung about the pin I26 by a cam track I42 formed in one side of a gear wheel I44 through which the cam shaft I48 is operated, the lever carrying a roll I46 which lies in this cam track.
For operating the wiper holders H6 to close the wipers widthwise of the shoe the holders are connected by links I48 to a slide I50 guided for movements lengthwise of the shoe on the wiper carrier H8, and as more fully disclosed in Letters Patent No. 2,160,846 this slide is operated through means including yieldable spring mechanism I52 (Fig. 3) by a bell-crank lever I54 (Fig. l) pivotally mounted at I56 on the wiper carrier. The bell-crank lever I54 is connected by a link I58 to an arm I68 fast on a rockshaft I62, and also fast on this rockshait is an arm I64 provided with a roll I66 lying in a cam track I68 formed in one side of the previously mentioned gear wheel I44. It will be understood that the spring mechanism I52 is yieldable in response to resistance encountered by the wipers, as hereinafter more fully explained, at the end of their inward wipe on the upper.
The cam tracks I42 and I68 by which respectively the wipers are advanced lengthwise of the shoe and are closed widthwise of the shoe are shaped differently from the corresponding cam vvicle room for this member.
tracks shown in the last-mentioned Letters Patent, mainly for the purpose of eliminating the partial retractive movements and the second advancing and closing movements of the wipers provided for by the earlier construction in the wiping of the upper over the insole. For reasons which will hereinafter appear the cam track I42 is so shaped as to impart in the same manner as heretofore a preliminary advancing movement to the wiper carrier toward the shoe prior to the upwiping operation, the wipers, however, being maintained in their fully open positions by the cam track I66 until after the upwiping operation.
To perform the upwiping operation there is provided a wiping plate I10 (Figs. 2, 3 and 4) formed to embrace the upper about the toe end of the last and having a wiping edge I12 curved to conform substantially to the curvature of the upper opposite the edge face of the toe end of the insole. The plate I10 is supported partly by the top faces of the wipers H4 and partly by a controlling member I14 having a rearwardly extending arm I16 on which a rearwardly extending portion of the plate rests, the wipers and their holders H6 having suitable slots therein to pro- The position of the plate relatively to the controlling member is determined by a pin I18 extending upwardly from the controlling member into a hole in the plate and by another pin I extending upwardly from the rear end of the arm I16 into an open slot I82 in the rear end of the plate. A diametrically enlarged portion I84 of the pin I18 is mounted in a guideway in the member I14 and by means of a pin I86 extending forwardly thereirom may be moved downwardly against the resistance of a spring I88 to release the plate I18 when it is desired to substitute a plate of different contour. The controlling member I14 is mounted for movements in directions lengthwise of the shoe relatively to the wiper carrier H8 along guideways provided by members I90 secured to the lower face of the wiper carrier. A spring I92 extending into a socket in the member I14 and abutting at its rear end against a block I94 secured to the wiper carrier holds the member normally in a position determined by the engagement of shoulders thereon with stops I95 fast on the front ends of the members I90. Further to assist in controlling the plate I10 there is secured to the lower face of a cover plate I98 on the wiper carrier a member 200 provided with a slot 202 into which the upper end of the pin I88 extends. By engaging the rear end portion of the plate I10 the member 280 prevents the plate from tipping in the upwiping operation. It will thus be seen that when the wiper carrier is moved preliminarily lengthwise of the shoe toward the toe prior to the upwiping operation the upwiping plate I18 is carried thereby into position to render it effective on the toe end of the upper in the upward swinging movement of the carrier. In order to prevent the plate from being carried too far under the end of the toe in the operation of the machine on shoes of some styles, with the result that the plate would thereafter apply'too much pressure to portions of the upper in the upwiping operation, mechanism is provided'jor 9 adjustably limiting the movement of the plate toward the-shoe- This mechanism comprises a stop lever 2M pivotally mounted at 2% on a bracket BtSwhich is fast on a portion 2 it of the frame of the machine, the lever having on its upper end a roll 2:12 arranged to be engaged by an arm 2M extending downwardly from the controlling member illi. position of the lever 294 -is determined adjustably by a screw 2 it which is threaded therein and engages the bracket 268. A spring 258 connected to the lever and to the bracketholds'the screw normally against the bracket. It will be understood that when the wipercarrier is moved toward the shoe prior to the upwiping operation the arm 2M is carried into-engagement with the roll 262 which limits the movement of the member Hi l and the plate Il-toward the shoe while permitting further movementof the wiper carrier against the resistance'of the spring 532. In the course of the upwiping-operation the spring E92 may yield to permit the plate llfi the member lid to move relatively to the wiper carrier in response to pressure of the upper at the end of the toe on the-plate if the contour of the toe is such as to produce this result.
Instead of the grippers shown in Letters Patent No. 2,160,846ior pulling the upper and for controlling it during a portion of the lasting operation/the machine herein shown is provided with a retarder identified generally by the reference character 223 (Figs. 9 and 18) for yieldingly clamping the marginal portion of the upper outspread on the upwiping plate Hi} to cooperate with the plate in applying a pull to the upper in the upwiping operation. This retarder is in many respects similar in construction to a retarder shown in LettersPatent No. 2,349,815, granted on May 30, 1944-, on an application of F. C. Eastmans,- but differs therefrom in some respects,
partly to avoidinterference with the end gage 32.-
It includes a pair of upper-clamping members 222 each arranged to engage the upper along one side and part way around the end of the toe.
Upwardly extending portions 22 of these memberssin the construction shown, are mounted on pins 225 projectingin directions widthwise of the shoe from the lower ends of a pair of links 228 the upper endsof which are rotatably mounted on a rod 239 secured midway between its opposite endsin an upwardly and downwardly extending bar 232 controlled as hereinafter described. The members are thus supported for adjusting movements toward and from each other along the pins 226'." The retarder further includes a central upper-clamping member 523 5 arranged to bridgellany space between the two members 222 at'the end of the toe and provided with ears 236 mounted on cylindrical projections 253$ on the links 228. 'Themernber 23 overlaps flat faces on the members 222 in such manner that all three members maintain a fixed relation to one another with respect to movement about the axes of the pins 225. The links 223 engage opposite side faces of the bar 232 are held against these faces by plates 24?} secured to the bar by screws 242. Extending through holes in the plates are sleevesfi l l'formed on the links and mounted to turn on these sleeves are the hubs 2 16 of latches M8 which extend into grooves formed in the-upwardly extending portions 22 3 of the retarder 'rnembers Threaded on the rod 23!) are'thumb nuts provided with flanges 252 which lie in grooves formed in the hubs t t e, so

After the upwiping operation, at a time when a rise 1) on the cam 294 arrives in position to engage the roll 292, the retarder is moved upwardly to its initial position away from the plate I'Hl.
In order that the upwiping plate I10 and the wipers H4 may perform the required operations on the upper it is necessary that the end gage 32 and the two side gages 34 be withdrawn from their operative positions. The previously mentioned gage-controlling member 44 which is secured to the vertically movable bar 33 of the end gage has fast thereon a plate 304 (Figs. 2, 5 and 6) which extends into grooves formed in spools 306 secured on reduced upper ends of the rods 53 of the side gages 34. By this plate, therefore, connection is maintained between the end gage and the side gages in all positions of adjustment of the side gages. The member 44 is connected by a link 308 toan arm 3Ill fast on a rockshaft 312 which is mounted in bearing members 3! secured to the frame casting 2. Also fast on the rockshaft is another arm 3H5 provided with a pin 3l8 which extends through a slot 326 (Fig. 2) formed in a link 322, this link being pivotally connected at its lower end to a block 324 fast on the cover plate I 98 of the wiper carrier I [8. A spring 326 connected to the pin 3l8 and to the link 322 holds the pin normally at the lower end of the slot 320, so that the normal positions of the gages 32 and 34 are determined by the wiper carrier. When the wiper carrier is swung upwardly after the shoe has been clamped against the pins [2 by the toe rest 30 it acts through the link 322 and the arm 3 I 6 to turn the rockshaft 3|2 and thereby to impart upward movement to the arm 3"] to withdraw the gages from their operative positions. The slot 320 is provided in the link 322 to avoid any danger of damage through possible contact of the gages with the shoe in the return of the parts to starting positions.
To facilitate the trimming of the toe end of the upper to remove the surplus marginal portion of the upper materials after the shoe leaves the machine, there is provided a plate 328 (Figs. 11, 12 and 13) having a downwardly extending rim 330 arranged to engage the bottom face of the toe end of the insole and an abutment face 332 curved to extend in substantially parallel relation to the edge of the insole and against which'a portion of the lasting margin of the upper is pressed in upstanding relationto the shoe bottom by the wipers H4 when the wipers are at the limits of their inward wiping movements over the insole. the wipers being so shaped that their wi ing edges conform substantially to the curvature of the portion of the upper pressed against the abutment face 332. The plate 328 is provided with a slot 334 through which the shoe-positioning pin l2 nearest the end of the toe extends and also has a tail portion 336 arranged to extend lengthwise of the shoe between and in engagement with flat faces (Fig. 16) on the other two pins l2. The plate is supported by a latch 338 which extends downwardly through a slot 340 therein and under a shoulder 342 on the plate, the latch being formed on a bar 334 which is movable in directions lengthwise of the shoe along guideways on the block l3. Extending into a slot 346 in this bar is a flange 348 formed on a knob 350 which is fast on the front end of a pin 352 movably mounted in the block 13 and held normally in the position shown in Fig. 12 by a spring 354. By means of the knob 350 the operator may move the pin 352 against the resistance of the spring 354 to cause the latch 338 to release the plate 328 when it is desired to substitute a plate of different contour. The plate is engaged on its top face near the end of the toe by a presser member 353 vertically movable in guideways in the block Ill and pressed downwardly by a spring 358 which abuts at its upper end against a pin 36!] in the block, the pin extending through a slot 362 in the presser member. Also engaging the top face of the plate 328 in locations farther from the end of the toe are two pins 363 spaced apart widthwise of the shoe and pressed downwardly by springs 366. The plate is therefore movable upwardly against the resistance of the springs 358 and 366 by pressure of the shoe thereon when the shoe is forced upwardly by the toe rest 30 into engagement with the shoe-positioning pins 92, and since it is thus movable relatively to these pins and may also tip longitudinally of the shoe it is permitted to adjust itself to the bottom of the shoe. The plate is so positioned initially lengthwise of the shoe under control of the spring 354 that it serves as a holddown to prevent displacement of the margin of the insole at the end of the toe in the upwiping operation. As the wipers H4 wipe the upper inwardly over the insole they act through the upper to force the plate inwardly lengthwise of the shoe against the resistance of the spring 354 until the inward movement of the plate is stopped by the end pin l2 which extends through the slot 334 in the plate, the plate being guided in its inward movement by the three pins l2 and the latch 338 moving with the plate. After its inward movement the plate is controlled positively by the end pin l2 and serves as an abutment against which a portion of the lasting margin of the upper is pressed by the wipers at the end of the toe and also along the sides of the toe.
The manner of operation of the machine, in so far as it is of interest with reference to the present invention, will now be briefly summarized. In presenting a shoe to the machine the operator moves it lengthwise toward the end gage 32 to bring the toe-end face of the last into contact with that gage while forcing the two side gages 34 apart by wedging action of the toeend portion of the shoe thereon, the bottom of the toe end of the insole engaging the plate 328 which at that time extends downwardly beyond the lower ends of the pins I2. At the same time the operator swings the heel end of the shoe upwardly to cause its ball portion to enter the space between the two other side gages 88 and to force these gages apart by contact with their inclined faces H2. It will be understood that before the shoe is thus presented suitable cement will have been applied to the margin of the toe end of the insole and between the different layers of the upper materials. For convenience the drawings show only two such layers, but it will be understood that the toe end of the upper materials will usually include three or more layers.
After having thus presented the shoe the operator starts the power operation of the machine, whereupon the toe rest 30 is moved upwardly to clamp the shoe against the lower ends of the pins l2, the plate 328 being lifted by the shoe against the resistance of the springs 2,44ogsso: 1
