Bergstrom, Millbury, Mass, assignor to Crompton & Knowles-Loom Works, Worcester, Mass, a corporation of Massachusetts Application March 18, 1946, Serial No. 655,158
This invention relates to improvements in warp beams for looms and it is the general object of the invention to provide an improved supporting gudgeon for the beam so constructed that it can be easily replaced when damaged without injury to other parts of the beam.
warps for looms are wound on a large beam having a cylindrical barrel provided at. the ends thereof with fittings, such as friction heads or attachments for letoifs. The barrel must be mounted for rotation not only in .the loom but also in the warp winding machine, andfor this purpose gudgeons are provided. In the past 1 Claim. (01. 242,424)
beam designated generally at B is provided with a cylindrical tubular metallic barrel in the ends of which may be threaded as at l I to receive the customary warp heads one of which is indicated at H in Fig. 1. The right and left ends of barrel Ill are provided with relatively heavy cylindrical plates or disks l2 and I2, respectively. welded or bolts l8 pass through the web l8. and into these gudgeons have been secured to the beam barrel in such a manner that they could not be removedwithout damaging the barrel or some part thereof. It is an important object of my present invention to provide a warp beam formed with a metallic tubular barrel having secured thereto fittings removably connected to plates or the like at the barrel ends and having centrally located therein. gndgeons which are held in position on the fitting by a driving fit.
into position as at I3 and permanently connected to the inside of the barrel. The right end'of the beam is provided with a fitting, such as a friction head l5, having a web [6 and ahub l'l. Screws tapped holes IS in the plate l2.
Extending through the hub I1 is a gudgeon which has an outer end 2| by means of which the beam can be supported in the loom, an intermediate part 22 which has a driving fit in the hub I1, and an inner end 23 projecting beyond It is another object of my invention to provide the fitting at each end of the barrel with a hub into which a gudgeon is driven in such manner thatthe inner end of the gudgeon projects beyond the fitting and into a bore in the aforesaid plate.
The fitting is held by'bolts or the like to the plate and can be removed together with-the gudgeon when the latter is damaged. The gudgeon can then be removed from the fitting and replaced by a new gudgeon. In a modified form of the invention the fitting has a hub which fits a hearing or bore in the plate.
With these and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, my invention resides in the combination and arrange.- ment of parts hereinafter described and set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein two forms ,of the invention are'set forth,
Fig. 1 is a vertical longitudinal section through a warp beam made according to the preferred form of my present invention,
Fig. 2 indicates diagrammatically the relation of the parts at the right end of the beam as shown in Fig. 1 prior to assembly,
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but showing a modified form of the invention, and
. Referring particularly to Figs. 1 and 2which show the preferred form of the invention, the
the web 16 and into a bore 24 located centrally in the plate l2 and axially of the barrel MI. .The end 23 has a close fit in the bore 24- but. can be slid into and out of the latter when required.
Fig. 2 shows the manner of assembling the right end of the beam B, which is as follows; gudgeon 20 is driven into theright end of hub l1 until it projects beyond the web It and assumes the relationship .with respect to the friction head. l5 as indicated in Fig. 1. The projecting end 23 of the gudgeon is then fitted into the bore 24, after which the screws l8 are turned into the tapped holes Hi to hold the gudgeon and friction head tightly against the plate l2.
v If for any reason the gudgeon 20 should be damaged and require removal, the screws It! will be removed and the gudgeon end 23 slipped out of the bore 2!, thus disconnecting the friction head from the'barrel. The gudgeon is then driven out of the hub ll without damaging the of the beam are assembled, since the assembly and disassembly of these parts is substantially the same as that already described for gudgeon In the modified form of the invention shownin Figs. 3 and 4 a barrel 40 similar to barrel. III has plates 4| and 42 secured thereto much in the same manner as plates I 2 and I2 are secured'to barrel ID. The friction-head H at the right end of barrel 40 has a web provided with a hub 44 having an inner extension 45 which extends into a bore 46 in plate 4|. This extension fits the bore snugly and is centered on the barrel 4!) by plate 4|. Screws 41 similar to screws l8 secure the head H' to plate 4|. A gudgeon 48 is driven into hub 44 and extension 45 and has its inner end located within bore 46.
The left end of barrel 40has a fitting 50 similar to fitting 3| and provided with a hub and a hub extension 52. A flange or web 53 is held by screws 54 to plate 42, and the extension 52 1 fits snugly into a. bore 55 in plate 42. A gudgeon 56 is provided for the fittingifland has a driving fit therewith.
The manner of assembling the fitting 50 is indicated in Fig. 4. The inner end 51 of the gudgeon is driven into the hub El and its extension 52 and the parts are then assembled much in the same manner as that described in connection with Fig. 2. If gudgeon 56 is damaged and needs renewing, fitting 5|) is removed from the barrel 40 by removal of screws 54 and the gudgeon driven out.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a simple construction for warp beams including a fitting attached to aplate in the end of the barrel and provided with a removable gudgeon which extends into a bore formed in the a bore of the plate. In both forms 01' the invention a web or flange is removably held to the plate In a warp beam for looms, a metallic tubular I barrel, a disklike plate fastened permanently to the interior of the barrel at one end thereof and having a bore therethrough concentric with the axis of the barrel, a fitting having a web transverse of the barrel, screw means for attaching said web to said plate and holding said fitting firmly in position on the plate, a hub integral with and the gudgeon is held to the fitting by a driving 40 fit, thereby facilitating removal of the gudgeon if the same is damaged without injury to the fitting or any other'part of the beam.
the fittingextending laterally from the web and having a substantially cylindrical bore therethrough, and a gudgeon driven into the bore of the hub and extending beyond the web and into the bore of said plate'and centering said fitting on the barrel and plate, said fitting being removable from the barrel when said screw means are removedand said gudgeon then being capable of being driven out of said hub.
