(ci. 1st-asv) 4 Claims. 1
This invention relates to improvements in cigarette extinguishers. It is an object of the invention to provide a cigarette extinguisher including two resilient perforate members arranged in overlapping relation so that the openrings in the two members move in and out of registry with one another and thus cut oii' any ash or burnt end on a cigar or cigarette extending through the apertures when the members are distorted and moved relative to one another by pressure exerted against them; moreover the resilience of the members is such that they rea'ssume their normal positions when the pressure exerted against their overlapping portions ceases.
Another object of the invention is to provide a cigarette extinguisher including two resilient perforate members which extend toward one another and have overlapping extremities which form -a centrally raised arch-like structure. Thus when downward pressure is exerted upon the overlapping portions of the members and the arch-like form is depressed the apertures in the members move into and out of registry with one yanother due to the relative movement of the two plates.
Having thus broadly and briefly stated some of the objects and advantages of the invention I will now describe it in detail with the aid of the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side view, partly in section, of the invention, and
Figure 2 is a plan view.
Figures 3 and 4 are sections on the lines 3--3 and 4-4 respectively of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing, l and la designate two opposed walls located adjacent opposite sides of an ashtray 2. These walls, in this instance, are integral with an annular frame 3 adapted to rest upon the base of an ashtray 2.
Projecting at an upward inclination from the wall I toward the wall la, is a resilient perforate member 4 having guide Eclips 5 secured to its opposite outer margins; and projecting at an upward inclination from the wall la toward the wall l is a similar resilient perforate member 4a having guide clips 5a secured toits opposite outer margins. The clips -5 and 5a engage the members 4a and 4 respectively intermediately of the length of the latter so that the outer portions of the two members are retained substantially contiguous to one another in overlapping relation and together assume a centrally raised arch-like contour. It will also be noted that the clips 5 and 5a permit relative movement of the two members so that when downward pressure is exerted upon the upper member 4 substantially centrally between the Walls I and la by the burnt end of a cigar or cigarette the arched form. is flattened and the outer extremities of the members 4 and 4a assume the positions indicated at 4 and 4a' and move nearer to the Walls la and l respectively. During this movement the apertures formed through the said members move in and out of registry with one another so that any portions of a cigar or cigarette which extend down through the apertures in both plates are cut off and drop onto the base of the ashtray 2.
In the arrangement shown, the resilient perforate members 4 and 4a each consist of a single piece of resilient sheet through -a plurality of suitably shaped apertures as shown at 9 are formed. Provided in the inner faces of the walls l and la are downwardly inclined slots Ill and 10a of substantially the same width as the members 4 and 4a respectively the inner ends of which are supported in the said slots. The guide clips 5 and 5a are secured to the resilient sheets which constitute the periorate members 4 and 4a respectively.
While in the foregoing the preferred embodiment of the invention has been described and shown, it is understood that alterations and modiiications maybe made thereto provided they fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A cigarette extinguisher including two resilient apertured members, means supporting each member at one extremity so that said members extend toward one another at an upward inclination from their supporting means, the unsupported ends or said members overlapping, means retaining said overlapping ends substantially contiguous so that said members extend substantially in the form of an arch between the supporting means, and said members being movable relative to one another when downward pressure is exerted upon their overlapping ends whereby the apertures in one member move into and out of registry with the apertures in the other member.
2. A cigarette extinguisher including two opposed walls, a resilient apertured member supported by and projecting 4at an upward inclination from each wall, the outer portions of the two members overlapping, clips holding the said overlapping portions substantially contiguous to one another whereby they together extend in the form of an arch, and said mem-bers being mounted for sliding movement relative to one another by said clips whereby downward pres- 4. The combination in claim 1, wherein each member consists of a single sheet of resilient ma.:
terial having apertures therethrough, and each u wall is slotted at a downward inclination from its inner side to support the inner extremity o1 one of the sheets.
