An object of theinvention is to provide an internal combustion engine having a -unique valved piston arrangement whereby the power of the engine is greatly increased during the operation thereof.
This invention is adapted for use with internal combustion engines of the radial, V type or in line type, and may also be used with engines employing the double acting, double piston construction, or may be used with various types of Diesel engines.`
Another object of this invention is to provide a'valved piston in opposed relation to the main piston, which is actuated by cam means on the crankshaft or cam shaft of an engine, such cam means having a spring pressed arm for engagement therewith, which through a linkage system connected to the Valved piston, causes the operation thereof.

tages in view, the invention consists of the novel details of construction, arrangement and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described, claimed and illustrated in .the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a vertical, sectional view of an engine embodying the invention;
Figure 2 is a front view of the cam wheel;
Figure 3 is aperipheral view thereof;
Figure 4 is a diagrammatic view of the engine in ring position;
Figure 5 is a diagrammatic view of the relative position of the cam wheel when the engine 4is in the position shown in Figure 4.
Figure 6 is a diagrammatic view of the engine in exhaust and intake position;
Figure 7 is a diagrammatic View of the relative position of the cam wheel when the engine is in the position shown in Figure 6;
Figure 8 is a diagrammatic view of the engine in transfer position;
Figure 9 is a diagrammatic view of the relative position of the cam wheel when the engine is in the position shown in Figure 8;
Figure 10 is a diagrammatic view of the relative position of the engine in compressed position and Figure 11 is a diagrammatic view of the relative position of the cam wheel when the engine is in the position shown in Figure 10.
Referring more in detail to lthe drawings, the reference numeral 20 designates the motor block or cylinder which has secured thereto, in the conventional manner, the crank case 2|. Journalled in bearing 22 in the sides of the crank case 2| is the crank 23 for the piston rod-24 of the piston 25 connected thereto by the wrist Din 26 and the block is provided with the intake connection 21 for connection to the intake'manifold, and the exhaust connection 28 for connection to the exhaust manifold. The intake valve 29 is mounted in the block adjacent the intake 21, and the valvemay be operated in any conventional manner. The elements of the engine previously described are somewhat conventional, and can be arranged to include radial V type or in line type of engine, as well as engines using the double action, double piston construction.
The invention contemplates extending the crank 23 to provide the portion 30 On'which is keyed the wheel 3| having the camV 32'on .one face of the rimthereof, and the cam has a degree rise, and a 45 -degree incline,lmaking a total cam surface of 90 degrees.
A bracket 33 secured' to the'block 2U and crank case 2| is provided with a bearing 34 for slidably mounting the rod 35 which is providedat one end with a fork 35 for journalling the pin axle 31 of Ithe roller 33 which'is mounted vat right angles to the wheel 3|, and is forced intoengagement therewith by means of a coil spring 39,r coiled about the rod 35, and interposed betweenv the fork 36 and the bearing 34, and the reduced portion A45 `of the bearing extends into the spring as shown in Figure 1. Pivotally -connected to the opposite end of the rod 35 by a pin 4| is a link 42 which is pivotally connected to a rocker arm 43 by a pin 44, yand the rocker arm is pivotally mounted on a pin 45 journalled in the extension arm 46 on the bracket 33.
At the upper end of the rocker arm 43 a pin- 4l pivotally connects the arm to a link 48 which is pivotally connected by a pin 49 to the piston rod 5i) of the piston 5|, which is mounted in the block in opposed relation to the piston 25 and both pistons are provided with conventional rings 52.
The link 48 is fitted on the pins 41 and 49 respectively, so that the link is free to oscillate on either pin. This construction allows the rocker arm 43 to force the rod 50 downward through the link 48 without causing the rod to bend or causing excessive side thrust on the rod 50.
The piston 5I is provided with` a spider 53 `forming ports 54, and the spider is provided with a central threaded bore for connection with the screw threaded end 56 of the rod 50.
The rod 53, at its threaded end, is provided with a cavity 56 which is partially threaded to receive the apertured, threaded insert 5l, and the valve stem 58 of the valve 59 is mounted in the insert 5'! and bore @il in the rod 50. Coiled about the stem 55 is a coil spring 6l which is interposed between the insert 51 and a collar 62 formed on the stem, and the spring forces the valve closed at all times except during the transfer period, the operation of which will be later explained.
While the block is provided with a conventional intake valve, the exhaust of combusted gases is accomplished by means of an annular row of exhaust ports 63 which are formed in the block and communicating with the exhaust connection 2 The skirt of the piston 25 extends below th se ports to keep them closed 4at 'all times exc pt when the engine is in exhaust posie tion.
The engine operates as a two cycle engine, and in Figure 4, the engine has flred, valve 29 is closed, piston 5l is at the top of the cylinder, and piston 25 is travelling downward. The roller 28 is just starting to engage incline of the cam 32. In Figure 6, the piston Z5 is at exhaust position, ports 63 are open, the roller 38 is at the peak of the cam 32, the intake valve 25 is open,
and the piston 5l is at its lowest point of decline. In Figure 8, the piston 25 is rising, the roller 38 has left the cam, and piston 5I is at its top position. This is called the transfer position, and the charge is forced through the open valve 59 into the cylinder when it is compressed as shown in Figure 10. In this position, the piston 25 is at top dead center, valves 2Q and 59 are closed, the roller is on the wheel in opposite relation to the cam, and the charge is ready to be ignited to start the cycles as previously described.
The igniting means for either an internal combustion engine or a Diesel engine would be mounted in the cylinder in position to ignite the charge in the conventional manner.
Thus an engine has been provided `that will re on each stroke, will double its operative power, `so that one cylinder will accomplish the work of several.
It is believed that the above description will fully explain the operation of the invention, and it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, arrangement and combination of parts may be resorted to, 'providing they fall within the spirit of the invention and the 'scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. An internal combustion engine of the type described, comprising a cylinder block, a piston in said block, means for operating said piston, a Ysecond piston in said block in opposed relation to said iirst piston, a piston rod for said second piston, a valve in said second piston, means for operating said second piston, said means comjprising a link connected to said rod, a rocker arm connected to said link, a second link connected to said rocker arm, and a spring pressed `rod connected to said last mentioned link, and means for'mounting said rod at right angles to said cylinder block, and means coacting with the meansfor operating said first piston connected to the means for operating said second piston.
