The present invention relates to so-called valve bags, preferably multi-ply paper bags, sealed at both ends but having at one corner a filling valve, formed by folding in said corner, in which is attached a tube of paper or the like extending into the bag beyond the valve. The bag is filled through this tube and, for the purpose of sealing the valve, that portion of the tube which extends into the bag beyond the valve is folded inside the bag, and the top wall of the tube is provided with a bendable stiffening insert of metal Which is bent in the folding of the tube and afterwards retains the bent position for retaining the tube in the folded position. According to the invention, the said stiffening insert consists of a metal wire or the like, preferably an iron wire, bent forth and back to form a few stems, interconnected by bends, the said stiiiening insert being in addition constructed and applied in such a way that the stems run substantially in the longitudinal direction of the tube and end in bends at the inner end of the tube. The inner bends of the stems next to the lateral edges of the tube are curved in the direction away from these lateral edges, and said stems are spaced from the said lateral edges a distance which is approximately as great as the distance between the stems. By this construction and application of the stiffening insert considerable advantages are gained. Firstly, the stiffening insert constructed in accordance with the invention is very readily and cheaply manufactured and applied. Further, this construction effectively eliminates the disadvantage often present in previous constructions in which the insert causes the folded inner end of the valve tube to be obstructed by the bag walls near the valve corner, so that it is more or less returned to the starting position when the valve corner of the bag straightens again after such deformation as it is subjected to when the tube is folded by bending the insert over upon itself to seal the filled bag. Further the risk of the stiifening insert coming loose or the tube being damaged by means of the stiffening insert in the bending thereof is minimized, and consequently, the risk of the stiffening insert coming into direct contact with the contents of the bag is also practically eliminated.
The invention will be more fully described in an embodiment thereof with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a vertical section, and
Fig. 2 is a top view of the corner provided with the filling Valve of a valve bag, the valve in Fig. 1 being shown in the expanded position it is occupyingr when -the bag is being filled through the valve opening.
Fig. 3 is a section corresponding to that of Fig. 1, the valve being in the flattened position and the sealing tube in the folded position they are occupying after the bag has been lled and the valve has been sealed.
Fig. 4 is a section illustrating a step in the sealing of the valve.
Fig. 5 is a plan view on a smaller scale of a spadelike auxiliary tool for folding the sealing tube.
Referring to the drawings, I denotes the bag preferably constructed in the form of a multi-ply paper bag, one corner of which is provided with a lling valve constructed in the known manner and formed by folding in a portion 2 of the bag wall in the corner of the bag. In the valvethere is attached by means of gluing, sewing or in any other manner a tube 3, preferably of multi-ply paper or the like, through which the bag is filled. This tube which need not project beyond the bag, has its outer end connected to the valve and its inner end extending beyond the valve into the i' bag. The top wall of the tube 3 is provided with a bendable stiffening insert in the form of a metal wire 4 or the like, preferably an iron wire, bent forth and back to form a few preferably parallel stems interconnected by bends. This stiffening insert is constructed and applied in such a way that the stems run substantially in the longitudinal direction of the tube and end at the inner end of the tube in bends. The bends at the inner ends of the stems next to the lateral edges of the tube `are curved in a direction away from these lateral edges and are spaced a distance therefrom approximately equal to the distance between the stems. The sealing of the valve after the bag has been filled is effected by folding the inner end, projecting into the bag, of the sealing tube 3 preferably just inside the inner end of the folded in valve, so that the previously flattened sealing tube is folded over and bent back upon itself about the inner edge of the lower wall or bottom of the folded in valve. In this folding of the tube the bendable stiffening insert 4 applied to the top wall of the sealing tube is also folded or bent and afterwards remains in the bent position and retains the sealing tube in the folded position in which the sealing tube effectively seals or closes the valve, as shown in Fig. 3.
The folding of the end of the sealing tube extending beyond the valve in the bag may be carried out by bending from the outside of the bag even directly with the hands the corner of the bag at which the valve is provided.
