  • Another object of the invention is to provide a window structure of the awning type having vertically sliding and swinging sash members which are adapted to be operated by a slide bar at each side of the window frame through the medium of suitable linkage and to providemeans on the slide bar and linkage for initiating swinging movement of the sash members i on their pivot points during the first movement applied to the slide bars to thereby break the joint between the linkage and pivot pin and permit the continued movement of the slide bars to swing the windows to an open position.

Another object of the invention is to provide a window structure of the awning type having vertically sliding and swinging sash members which are adapted to be opened and closed by means of operating mechanism at each side of the window structure, including slide bars and linkage arranged so that upon movement of the slide bars in an upward direction to close the windows, means on the linkage will be engaged by cam means on the slide bars to completely close the vertically sliding and swinging sash members and give an added impetus thereto to force the sash members to their completely closed position. 1
Another object of the invention is to provide an awning type metal window structure, including a series of vertically sliding and swinging sash members which are pivoted at their upper end to the operating slide bars at each side of the window structure in such a manner as to permit a predetermined amount of sliding movement of the slide bars prior to the exertion of a force downward on the pivot point of the sash member so that a projection carried by the slide member and received in aslot in the pivot mem-- bers of the vertically swinging sash members will free itself from said slot during the initial down-f ward movement of the operating slide bars to thereby unlock the pivots of the swinging sash; members and permit the same to swing freely upon their pivots upon continued downwardtravel of the slide bars.
Another object of the invention is to provide a metal window construction of the awning type having a series of vertically sliding and swinging sash members havingthe pivot pins thereof arranged with the slots therein so as to receive the projections carried by the slide bars at eachside of the'window structure during the closing movement of the window sashes and thereby lock the'pivot against turning movement and simultaneously exert a slight closing force ont-he pivot members, so as to exert an additional closing force on the vertically sliding and swinging sash members, and force the same home upon their seats in the window frame.
Another object of the invention is to provide a metal window structure of the above-mentioned type in which the slide bars may be adjusted to space the projections carried thereby various slight distances apart to permit the adjusting of said slide bars and cause the freeing of said projections from the slots in the pivot pins of the sash members in predetermined timed relation and succession.
Another object of the invention is to provide a metal window structure of the awning type having vertically sliding and swinging sash members controlled by means of operating mecha nism at each side of the window, including slide bars and linkage arranged and connected so that certain portions of the slide bar may be disconnected to facilitate the operation of a single window while permitting the remaining windows to be closed.
Another object of theinvention is to provide a metal window structure having vertically sliding and swinging sash members which may be opened to facilitate washing the outer surfaces of the windows from the inside of the building so as to eliminate the need of employing ladders and the like for washing the windows on the,
exterior of the building.

Detailed description of the invention In the drawings, wherein for .the purpose-of illustrating the invention there is shown a preferred embodiment of the same, including the operating mechanism for the sash members and the various parts incident thereto, the reference character 5 will generally be employed to designate a window frame formed from Z-bars or the like including side, top and end bars arranged with their ends connected together in rectangular relationship. Th window frame bars include a web portion 6 and oppositely extending flange portions 1 and 8 (Figures land 7) The window frame 5 may be installed-in a window opening in a building or the like in the usual manner and may be fixed in place by screws, bolts or other fastening means.
The window frame 5 is adapted to be provided with a series of vertically sliding and swinging sash members 9 which are rectangular in construction and also may be formed of Z-bars or other cross-sectional shapes and include a web portion Ill having oppositely extending flanges l2 and 43. Glass window panels 14 are installed in the verticallysliding-and swinging sash membersfi and'are held in place by glazing :or packing strips as at l5.
.Slidably mounted on the web portion 6 of the side window -frame bars is a slide bar l6 having elongated slots ll which are received onrstuds it having their ends :riveted-in place as at H) and being formed with relativelylarge heads 20 to retain the slide bars I6 in position. While there is shown in the drawingsa window opening mechanism for only one side of the'window structure, it is to be noted that both sides thereof will be provided with the same operating mechanism,-and since they are identical in construction and operation, the mechanism of one side only will be described. It isintended to form the slide bars lB-ofconnected sections 21 adjustably-fastened together by means of a screwand l slOt connection 22 and 23 respectively.
Afiixed to each of the window sash members-fl at the upper sides thereof is a pivot pin supporting bracket 24 having a pair of spaced longitudinally extending slots 25 for receiving anchoring screws as at 26. The upper end-of eachpivot pin supporting bracket projects slightly above the top sash framemember and'is fittedwith apivot pin 21. A'depression 28 is formed in the pivot pinsupporting bracket-M for engaging the web portion 10 of the window sash to facilitate adjustment'of'the pivotpin 2! andthetightening and loosening of either one of the fastening screws 26 to thereby adjust the pivot'pin supporting bracket 24 in itsproper position. The pivot pin 21 is secured within an opening in the uppel' end of the pivot pin supporting bracket by being riveted or spun as at 30 (Figure '5) so as to securely lock the pivot pin to the bracket and maintain the same against rotary displacement.
Each of the window sashes 9 is pivotally secured to the web portion 6 of the window frame by means of pivot links 3| whichhave one of their ends attached to-the web portion- [00f the window sash by means of an enlarged headed rivet 32 while the other end of each ofthepivot links -3l is pivotally attached to an enlarged headed rivet 33 anchored in an opening 34 in the window frame web portion 6. The pivot pin 33 foreach of the pivot links 3! is provided with a guide portion 35 for'slidably guiding and additionall retainingthe slide operating bars I6 in sliding contact with the .web portion 6 of the window frame, The guide portion .35 of each pivot pin 33 operates in an elongated slot 36 formed-in the slide bar". It will thus be seen that the sash frame 5 may be swung about the horizontal axis of th pivot pins 32 and 33 by means of the connecting links 3|.
In order to move the upper edge of the window sash members downwardly and upwardly, a pivot bracket 31 is attached to the slide bar l6 by means of a pin and slot connection Hand 40 to permit relative sliding movement between the operating slide bar It and the bracket 31, during which the links 3| are connected to the sash members l are located well above the mid-points of the side portions l0 thereof, about two thirds of the weight of the sash member I5 is disposed below the pivot pins 32, thereby overbalancing the sash members 50 at their lower portions. This overbalancing effect tends to normally urge the pivot pins 21 upward, thereby extending upwardly the pivot brackets 31 slidably mounted on the upper ends of the slide bars l6.
It is to be understood that the adjustably con nected sections 2| comprising the slide bar 16 may be constructed to accommodate a pair of vertically sliding and swinging sash members in which case a pair of pivot brackets 31 would be afiixed to each section 2| of the slide bar with the joint of the lower section 2| being arranged so as not to interfere with the slide openings for supporting the slide bar l6; As shown clearly in Figure 5, the pivot bracket 31 is slightly offset as at 43 and is slotted as at 44 for a purpose which will be presently fully described.
Mounted on the sections 2| of the slide bar l6 at spaced intervals therealong adjacent the pivot pins 2'! is a series of key members 45. As shown in Figures 10 and 11, the key members are'T- shaped and are provided with reduced portions 41 adapted to bereceived in'square openings in the slide bar sections so as to be riveted therein as at 46. The locking keys 45 are adapted to be received in slightly wider diametrically disposed slots 48 formed in the radial wall of the pivot pins 21 to provide mutually engaging locking and camming members when the slide bar l6 at each side of the window frame is raised to the limit of its uppermost position. It is to be noted in Fig ure 12 that the slot 48 of the pivot pin 21 is at an angle of approximately 7.5 degrees so that when the locking key is projected into said slot 48, it exerts a camming action against the'slightly inclined walls thereof so that the pivot pin 21 will be given a slight movement in a lateral direction to close the sash'upon upward sliding movement of the slide bar It when closingthe window sashes. a
When the slide bar I6 is drawn downwardly as shown in Figure 5, the locking key 45 moves downwardly out of the slot 48 inthe pivot pin 2? and is received in a slot 44 of the pivot bracket 31 and limited against further movement by said slot 44 as well as the pin and slot connection 39 and 40. Thus, the mutually engaginglocking and camming surfaces are disengaged and the window sash 9 will be free to swing outwardly as the upper edge thereof is drawn downwardly by the slide bar at each side of the window frame. on the up-travel or stroke of the slide bar H5 at each side of the window frame, the upper portion of the locking key engages the peripheral edge of the pivot pin 21 and pushes it upward while the sash 9 swings the pivot 2! until the slot 48 therein is in registry with the locking key 45 so as to permit said locking key to enter the slot and exert a camming movement thereto in a lateral direction so as to exert a final closing force on the sash. This mechanism assists a cam device described below in looking the window sash in its closed position when the lockingkey 45 is received in the slot 48 so as to prevent the same being opened by an unauthorized person grasping the lower edge thereof and exerting a pull force The pivot bracket 31 is prevented from thereon. lateral dis-placement when the locking key 45 is received in the slot 48 which provides a two-point connection between the slide bar I6 and the bracket. Similarly, the bracket 31 is prevented from lateral movement relative to the slide bar and the pivot pin 39 when the locking key 45 is in the position shown in Figure 5 or displaced from the slot 48 by reason of the fact that the key 45 i is received in the slot 44- in the offset portion 43 of the bracket.
Each of the pivot links 3| is formed of a pair of sections 50 and 5! which have their inner ends overlappedand weldcd or otherwise secured together (Figures 8 and 9) and one edge of the sec-- tion 5| is beveled and undercut as at 52 to provide a cam surface to initiate swinging movement of thesash members 9 during the initial travel of the slide bar It to open the window. Welded to the section 5|] of each sash frame pivot link 3| is a cam plate 53 having a beveled surface 54 which is undercut and extends parallel with the beveled undercut surface 52 formed on the upper edge of the section 5|. The cam surfaces 52 and 54 are ,adapted'to interlockingly cooperate with a cam plate 56 disposed obliquely on the operating bar IS in such a manner as to exert an outward force on the pivot links 3| during the initial opening movement of the slide bars IE to thereby break the joint between the pivot points 2 l, 32 and 33.. The cam plate 56 is provided with beveled undercut cam surfaces 51 and 58 so as to interlock with the cam surfaces 52 and 54 and lock the sash members 9 to prevent them from being openedby an unauthorized person grasping the lower edge thereof I and prevent lateral displacement during the initial opening or closing movement of the slide bar Hi and sash members 9. It is to be understood that each pivot link 3| for the respective sash members will be provided with obliquely disposed cam surfaces 52 and 54. Obliquely disposed cam plates 56 may be arrangedon the various sections 2| of the slide bars It at each side of the window frame in spaced apart relation so as to initiate the opening movement of the window sashes during downward travel of the slide bar l6 and force the window sashes to their seated position against the window frame during upward travel of the slide bar it thereby effecting the main locking actiono the sashes 9.
Suitable means will be provided for raising and lowering the slide bars l6 and said means may include a horizontal shaft at the lower end of the window frame having crank arms at the ends for connection with the slide bars l6 and anism, including the gearing, will hold or lock the slide bars-tw'agamst movement so thattheseries ofswindow sashes maybe-held inwarious-positiQns of adjustment. A1so,=a lower normal. tyvpe sash member may be employed-as-an operatonfor the sash members there-above with the lower sash member connected andarrangedto operate the upper. sash members in tandemwhen the'lower normal sash is operated manually.
Operation of the invention -In the position of the relative parts shown in Figure l, the windowsash 9 is in a fullyclosed position and is locked against-unauthorized"opening by means of the interengaging cam surfaces 52, 54, 58 and 51 respectively. In this position, the slide bars lfiarein their fully raised-position andthe window-sash 9 is completely closed relative tothe frame 5.
Should it be desired to open the Window sashes fi, the slide bars at each side of the'window frame maybe moved downward in a vertical directionby manipulation of the above-mentioned manual operating mechanism (not shown) so thatsaidslide bars-will move relativeto the sash members a slight amount during their initial After the key members 45 have been disengaged fromthe slots-48 in the pivot pinsZ'l, the cam surfaces Stand 58 will cooperate to exert-an outward movement on the pivot links 3| and cause the same to swing about their fixed pivotal points 33. This outward 'movementbreaks the joint between the links 3i and sash member by urging the'free swinging ends of the links3l outward away from the window frame. In so doing, the window sash members are given a rotational movement about their pivot pins 21 and from the initial movement of the slide bars Hi, the key projections 55 will havebeen disengaged from the slots Mi of the pivot pins 21 and the connecting pin:39 of'the bracket 3! will have reached the limit of its movement in the slot 40.
Continued downwardmovement of the slide bars? it exerts a direct downward pull force on the pivot pins 21 and causes the upper ends of the sashmembers to be like-wise drawn downwardly and thereby rock the sash members on the. pivotal connections between the pivot links and sash members. The cam surfaces 52 and will cooperate to exert an opening and outward movement on the pivot links and sash members until they have become disengaged as shown in Figure 2, whereupon further continued movement of the slide bars l6 will swing the sash members to an open position until they reach a horizontal position.

A window operating mechanism for a window structure havingwa supporting frame and sashmember, link means pivotally connecting, said sash and frame members, a sliding operating member pivotally connected to the sash main bar, cam means on the link means and sliding op erating member for exerting a push and pull force on said sash member when the same lSODEI16dQ and closed respectively, and interengagea'ble cam means connected respectively to said link means and sliding operating'inember for locking said sash in a closed position.
5. A window operating mechanism for a win-- dow structure having a supporting'frame and sash member, link means pivotally connecting said sash and frame members, a sliding operating member pivotally connected to the sash member, cam means on the link means and sliding operating member for exerting a push and pull force on said sash member when the same is opened and closed respectively, and interengageable cam means connected respectively to said link means and sliding operating member for locking said sash in a closed position, said last-named means including mutually engaging surfaces movable relative to one another and controlled by the movement of the operating sliding member.
6. In a window structure having "a, window frame and a sash frame arranged for'vertical sliding and swinging movement, link means ateach side of said frame connecting the sash frame to the window frame, a vertically movable operating member pivotally connected to the upper end of said sash frame, and means on the linkmeans for exerting an outward and inward pressure on the sash frame to swing the same about its pivotal connection when the operating member is moved downwardly and upwardly respectively.
7. In a window structure having a window frame and a sash frame arranged for vertical sliding and swinging movement, link means at each side of said frame connecting the sash frame to the window frame, a vertically movable operating member pivotally connected to the upper end of said sash frame, and means on the link means for exerting an outward and inward pressure on the sash frame to swing the same about its pivotal connection when the operating memberis moved downwardly and upwardly respectively, said last-named means including interengageable camsurfaces on the link means and operating member respectively.
