The invention relates generally to hone structures and primarily seeks to provide a novel cylinder hone which is simple in construction and can be manufactured at low cost, and in which the cylinder wall engaging stones are mounted in a novel manner enabling them to readily conform to and efliciently hone cylinder surfaces which are not entirely true and uniform.
Cylinder honing devices are known in which there are included a shaft insertable axially into a cylinder, and cylinder wall honing elements carried by the shaft and effective as the shaft is rotated to engage and hone the cylinder walls.
In some of these known devices the honing elements are sWingably mounted at longitudinally spaced points on a rigid carrying shaft, and in such devices it is impossible for the honing elements to conform to cylinder wall surfaces engaged thereby and which are not true and uniform. This is due to the fact that the rigid shaft mounting causes the swinging honing elements 6 Claims; (Cl. 51-1842) always to remain in parallel relation to the axis of the rigid shaft. Therefore, it is an object of the present invention to provide a novel cylinder honing device in which the honing head including the honing elements and the swingable mountings therefor is so constructed as to be capable of flexing in two planes, one along and one across the axis of the head, thereby to permit the honing elements to properly engage in honing contact with cylinder walls that are not true and uniform.
An object of the invention is to provide a honing device of the character stated including a shaft insertable axially into a cylinder to be honed and having longitudinally spaced thereon two support members, and a plurality of honing elements swingably mounted on the support members and adapted to engage and hone cylinder wall surfaces as the shaft is rotated, said shaft having a flexible section between the longitudinally spaced support members capable of flexing about and along its axis in a manner for enabling the honing elements to conform to cylinder wall surfaces that are not true and uniform.
With the above and other objects in view that will hereinafter appear, the nature of the invention will be more clearly understood by reference to the following detailed description, the appended claims, and the several views illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating a hone structure embodying the invention, parts being broken away and in section.
Figure 2 is a vertical cross section taken on the line 2-2 on Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a somewhat diagrammatic vertical sectional view illustrating the improved hone structure in the process of honing a cylinder wall which is slightly tapered the arm engaging springs and the spring covering cap being omitted for purposes of clarity.
Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 3 illustrating the manner in which rigidly mounted honing elements engage a slightly tapered cylinder wall.
In the example of embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, the improved hone structure includes a flexible shaft 5 having a head 6 brazed or otherwise secured on one end extremity thereof, and a driver head i brazed or otherwise secured on the other end extremity thereof.
The head 6 has an end face 8 forming part of a sphere, and its upper face 9 is disposed perpendicular of the axis of the shaft. Three pins ill project from the face 9 in equidistantly spaced relation and with their axes paralleling the axis of the shaft 5.
Spaced a distance above the head face 9 is a disk I I, said disk being brazed or otherwise secured to the shaft 5. If desired, the edges of the disk may be cut away or notched in the manner clearly illustrated in Figure 2, and three pins 12 project from said disk toward the driving head I, or in other words in the same direction of projection as the pins l0 and in axial alignment with said pins.
Three U-shaped stone carriers generallydesignated I3 are provided and each thereof comprises a U-b ase l4 and two arms l5, the latter being disposed perpendicular to the axis of the shaft 5, and the base M being disposed in parallel rela tion to the axis of said shaft. Each carrier member base I4 includes a channel or groove l6 ex,
tending throughout the major portion of its length between the arms l5, and in each channel is secured a honing stone ll. It will be apparent by reference to Figure 2 of the drawings that the outwardly projected portion of each honing stone is convexly curved as at I8 and projects slightly beyond the edge portions of the channel in which it is mounted. a
Each carrier arm I5 is provided with an aperture 19 to fulcrum on one of the pins ill or 2, and inwardly of each said aperture, each arm disposed to overlie the plate H is equipped with a headed stud 20. A retractile spring 21 is connected at its ends to each adjacent pair of the arm studs 20, and it will be apparent by reference to Figure 2 that the springs constantly tend to force the stones ll outwardly.

I claim:
1. A honing device as defined in claim 1 in whichthe honing elements include U-shaped carriersthaving armszfulcrumed on pins projecting in like direction from both support members and' paralleling the axis of the shaft, and in which there is included a cap slidable along the shaft and removablyvsecured: thereon in position for retaininggthe carrier arms on thepins;
