UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH THORPE, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO E. & H. T. ANTHONY & OO., OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PHOTOGRAPHIC PLATE-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 244,339, dated July 12, 1881.
Application filed April 20, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, J osEPH THORPE, of Jersey Oity, Hudson county, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Photographic Shield or Plate-Holder, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a double shield or plate holder-in which two sensitive plates may be carried and successively 1o exposed.
This invention consists of a shield or plate holder provided with a central sliding carrier which contains a partition, on each side of which a sensitive plate is carried, as will be 1 5 described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved shield or plate-holder, showing the sliding plate-carrier and one ofthe sliding covers of the shield drawn 2o partially out of the frame. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view ofthe same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the plate slide or carrier and the two sensitized plates thereon.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The shield or plate-holder is a rectangular frame formed of the top and bottom rails,H and J, and the end rails, K and O. The opposite surface of the longitudinal or top and 3o bottom rails, H and J, is provided with a central longitudinal groove, I, for the plate-carrier,
and with grooves at each side of the groove I for the sliding covers M, which are used to shut off the light from the sensitive plates.
The plate-carrier is formed of a partition or septum,A,provided with an end strip,B, and with doublegrooved iianges O O at the top and bottom edges, so that a sensitized plate, D, can be held to each side of the partition A by 4o passing it int-o the grooves of the flanges C.
A spring, E, is attached to each surface of the partition and presses the plate D outward, whereby the same is firmly held in the platecarrier.
A strip of wood, F, connects the flanges O adjacent to the end strip, B, and the edge of this strip F adjacent to the edge of the plate D is provided with a notch or recess, G,to admit the finger to facilitate removing the plate.
5o This plate-carrier fits in grooves I of the plate-l (No model.)
holder frame, one of the end railsfor instance K-being provided with a longitudinal slot ot' sufficient size to admit the plate-carrier, so that the same can slide iu the grooves of the plateholder frame.
The end plate, B, above mentioned, fits closely against the outer surface of the end rail, K, and excludes all light.
The slides M are provided with end strips,
N, and slide into the plate-holder through slots 6o in the end rail, O-that is, the plate-carrier slides into the plate-holder from one end, and the cover-slides slide in from the opposite end.
The end rail, O, is provided with longitudinal recesses containing flat strips P, the inner 6 5 edges of which are pressed outward-that is to say, against the inner surfaceof the correspondin g slide M-by springs. These strips P, with the end strips,N, of the slides M, prevent the light from entering at the slot of the end 7o rail, O.
The operation is as follows: The slides M M are passed into the plate-holder frame from one end, sliding in their corresponding grooves in the top and bottom rails, and the plate-car- 7 5 rier, with the sensitized plates, is introduced from the opposite end, sliding in its groove I in the top and bottom rails. The plate-holder is then introduced into the camera. If the plate D is to be exposed to the action of the light, the corresponding slide M is withdrawn for a short time and then replaced. The plateholder is then withdrawn from the camera, reversed, and replaced in the camera, so that the other sensitive plate may be exposed and a picture taken.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A photographic shield or plate-holder, made substantially as herein shown and described, having a central plate-carrying septum or slide, as set forth.
2. In a photographic shield or plate-holder, the combination, with the plate-holder frame, 9 5 of a central plate-carrying septum or slide, as set forth.
3. In a plate-holder, the combination, with the plate-holder frame, of a sliding plate-carrier, with grooves at each side of the septum, :oo
for carrying :i plate at each side ofthe septum, l or septum A, the donble-grooved flan ges C, and
and of two slides on opposite sides ofthe platethe end strip, B, all oonlbined substantially carrier, substantially as herein shown and del as set forth. scribed, and for the purpose set forth.
4. ln n plate-holder, a sliding plate-carrier, Witnesses: made as herein shown and described, and oon- OSCAR F. GrUrIZg sistingof tllei'ollowng elements: the partition C. SEDGWIOK.
