UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BERNARD J. RILEY, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
PAD'LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 244,311, dated July 12, 1881.
Application filed February 18, 1881. (ModeL) I To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BERNARD J. RILEY, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Padlocks; andI do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, in which Figure l is a face view of padlock, part of the shell being removed to show interior; and Fig. 2a perspective representation of bolt and bolt-holder.
This invention has relation to an improvement in padlocks, and has for its object to lessen the cost of manufacture and provide a more secure and more easily applied form of bolt and bolt and spring holder than are usually employed.
My invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, having reference chiefly to making the bolt and bolt-holder each of a single piece of metal, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Adesignates the case of the padlock, constructed of the usual or any suitable form, with the openings a a for the pivoted and locking ends of the hasp B, and the holes I) b for a revolving key-post. The latter is channeled for the reception of' a flat key, and this channel, coinciding with a notch in the lower part of the hole 1), forms the keyhole; the key is inserted when the channel and notch are opposite each other.
C designates the bolt, consisting of a Z- shaped piece having a horizontal piece or extension, 0, for the reception of the spiral boltspring (I, and the beveled locking part or head f.
G is the bolt-holder, consisting of a plate having the parts 9 g bent upward to form standards, which are slotted for the passage of the beveled locking portion f and stem 0 of the bolt. The standard 9 is T-shaped, and the lateral extensions or arms h h thereof pass through holes in the walls of the case and serve as studs to keep the bolt-holder in position.
The bolt-holder is fastened to the lock-case by a suitable rivet, z. A depending extension, k, of the plate G serves as a stop to limit the backward play of the bolt, which is bent inwardly, as shown at at, so as to strike said extension. The forward movement of the bolt is limited by the standard 9 of the plate G.
The padlock is self-locking, the bolt being pushed backward by the pressure of the hasp. In opening the lock with the key the ward impinges against the part m, which is bent at right angles to the body of the bolt, and pushes the bolt back without allowing the key to be turned entirely around.
The belt and bolt-holder are each formed of a single piece of metal, and, being cast or struck up of the proper shape, require no special fitting or finishing to adapt them to use.
When the padlock is made in quantities it may be profitably sold at a very low price.
The mechanism is as secure and as proof against picking as necessity demands, and, being very simple, is not liable to get out of order.
My improvements are not confined to padlocks, but may be applied to door and. other locks and used in connection with a suitable hasp or keeper.
'Having described my invention, I claim- 1. In a padlock, the bolt-holder consisting of the plate G, having the bent and slotted standards 9 g and stop-extension k, all made in one piece, substantially as described and shown.
2. The combination of the bolt-holder, consisting of plate G, with slotted standards g g, and stop-extension bolt 0, with beveled end or head f, stem 0, and stud m, and the spiral spring 01, encircling stem 0, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with the lock-case, ofthe bolt-holder, consisting of the plate Gr, having standards 9 g, the standard 9 being T-shaped, with its parts it h fitting suitable holes or seekets in the lock-case, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BERNARD J. RILEY.
