Description

J. EGGL CLOTHES BASKET June 8, 1948..
Filed Sept. 27. 1944 I N VEN TOR.
ATTORNEYS Patented June 8, 1948 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CLOTHESBASKET Joseph Eggl, Toledo, Ohio Application September 27, 1944, Serial No. 556,048
1 Claim. 1
The invention relates to a basket and more especially to a clothes, market or other basket.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a basket of this character, wherein the body thereof is made from wire stretches so that it will maintain its original shape, the top rim being wrapped or otherwise covered by reed, cloth ribbon or leatherette gimp to give a smooth and neat appearance to such body as a whole.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a basket of this character, wherein the side stays are locked into the rim at the top of the body of the basket, and this rim can be covered with gimp, so that the stays will be held secure and in place, with resultant rigidity to the body for use as a carrier or article container.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a basket of this character, which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient for the purposes intended, resilient, strong, durable, neat in appearance, readily and easily constructed, and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which shows the preferred embodiment of the invention, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a top plan view of a basket constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a section on the line 2--Z of Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 4 is a sectional View taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 2 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 5 is a side view of one of the side stays of the basket.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, A designates generally the basket in its entirety constructed in accordance with the invention, and comprises a bottom hoop ll] of substantially elongated oval shape, it being preferably made from a metal bar of substantially L-shape in cross-section and such hoop is of endless formation.
Secured to the horizontal lay or flange of this hoop at the under side thereof by welding or otherwise are the terminal tips I I of the downwardly curved hook formations l2 of upstanding side stays 13, each being preferably made from Wire length, selectively spaced apart to effect a body area for holding articles or objects as may be placed therein.
The side stays I3 at their upper ends are interlocked in a channeled top rim or rail I4, its channel being in the under side thereof, and the stays 13 are formed with upper hook ends l5 which are seated in such channel, as denoted at it in the rail or rim M. The rim or rail is of hoop formation and endless.
The bottom hoop 10, top rim or rail l4 and the stays 13, can be Wrapped with cane, reed, oilcloth ribbon or leatherette gimp, not shown, thereby giving a finished appearance to the basket when completed or the body frame of the latter may be enameled, if desired. Furthermore, the open center of the bottom hoop It] can be closed weaving a bottom panel thereto, not shown, and additionally, the sides and ends of the frame creating a body area can be closed by weaving material.
The top rim or rail I4 at opposite ends has rising therefrom strap handles l! for convenience in the carrying of the basket.
What is claimed is:
A basket frame of the type described, comprising a bottom hoop of substantially L-shape in cross-section with one leg thereof extending upwardly and forming the outer periphery of the hoop, a flat top rim having a channel in its under side, side stays having lower hook-like ends, the termini thereof rigidly secured to the under side of said bottom hoop with the hook-like ends extending outwardly and away therefrom to provide supports for said frame, and upper hook ends formed on said stays and engaged within the channel in said top rim.
