I. MOORE. MUSIC LEAP TURNER.
110. 244,281. Patented July 12,1881.
w: ,Y 1:11 1 1' ga; l 1 l OES FIIIIIIIIIHI ll- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
IRA MOORE, OF LEAVENWORTH, KANSAS.
MUSIC-LEAF TURNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 244,281, dated July 12, 1881.
Application filed April 18, 1881.
To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, IRA MOORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Leavenworth, in the county of Leavenworth and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Turning the Leaves of Music; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appcrtains to make and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, and to thelet.- ters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specication.
My invention relates to an apparatus for turning the leaves of music while the notes formed thereon are being played; and the object of my invention is to provide certain novel devices for such purpose; second, to provide novel combinations of devices for producing theresultshereinafterdescribed. Iaccomplish these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view, showing a plate of metal to which the other parts are secured, sliding bars having cogs upon portions of their upper surfaces, guides for such bars provided with anti-friction rollers, oscillating arms having geared wheels or parts attached to them, and also leafturners or clamps, handles for moving the sliding bars, and strips of metal which constitute a rack for holding the sheets of music before being placed in the leaf-turners. Fig.2 is a plan view, showing the parts above enumerated; and Fig. 3 is a front elevation, partly in section, the leaf-turning arms and clamps being omitted for the purpose of showing the grooved anti-friction rollers.
Similar letters refer to similar parts in the several gures.
In constructingleaf-turners of this character I provide a plate of metal, A, or it may be of any other suitable substance that will support the other parts ot' the apparatus. This plate may be provided with holes for the passage of screws for securing it to the instrument upon which it is to be placed, and it is also provided with projecting studs or pins A A', for a purpose soon to be explained.
(No model.)
At or near the center horizontally, and near the lower ed ge ofthe plate A,there are secured two projecting ears or flanges, A2 A2, between which there are placed, and to which there are pivoted, two arms, B B, the oftice ot' which is to turn the leaves of sheet-music when said arms are properly manipulated. The inner or pivoted ends of these levers are attached to geared pinions or wheels B2 B3 5 or, if preferred, cogs may be formed upon the ends of the arms, an enlargement being formed thereon for that purpose. These arms and their wheels are piv oted between the projections A2 A2, secured to the plate A in such manner that theycan turn or oscillate freely, and yet be held in position by said projections.
To each of the arms or leaf-turners B and B' there is attixed a sliding` clamp, G, the lower end of which consists of a piece of metal having in it a slot or groove for the passage of the arm, and upon one side thereof' a spring for holding the clamp in its adjusted position on the arm.
For the purpose of holding the sheets to be turned in their proper position there is aiixed to the slotted portion of .the clamp a slotted standard formed of wire or other suitable substance, between the two arms of which the sheet to be turned is to be placed, so that as the positions of the arms are changed the leaves will be turned and have their opposite sides presented to the performer.
For the purpose of moving the arms B B', as above described, there is provided as many sliding bars D as there are arms, of which there may be any required number to enable the operator to turn as many sheets as may be necessary to be used in playing one piece of music. These bars, near their inner ends, are provided, upon their upper surfaces, with cogs, which mesh into those formed upon the arms B and B', or the wheels to which they are attached. The inner ends of the bars D pass between the projections formed on plate A, their outer ends being held in position by guides E E, which are secured to plate A, and carry at each of their ends anti-friction rollers E E', which bearupon the upper surfaces of the bars and keep them in position. The inner one of each of these pairs ot' rollers has formed in its periphery a groove, in which the arms B B rest when in the positions shown in Figs. l and 2.
Attached to the outer ends of sliding bars D are pivoted handles D D', they heilig pivoted to said bars and provided with stops D2 D2, which, when the sliding bars have been moved far enough to cause the leaves to be turned, come in contact with the studs A A of the plate A, and thus prevent said bars from bein g moved too far.
For the purpose of providing a suitable rest or rack for holding the music upon the instrument when it is not desirable to place it in the turning-clamps, there is placed upon the plate A a shelf, and at its ends strips of metal, which project upward to or above the upper surface of the plate A, and thus hold the sheets in po. sition to be read and readily turned by hand.
The operation of this apparatusis as follows: When it has been secured in its position on the musical instrument, the sheets to be turned A are placed in the slotted portion of the clamps C C, the arms which carry them having been previously turned so as all to pointin the same direction when more than one sheet is to be turned, when, by applying the requisite force to the handles D D in succession, the arms or leaf-turners B B will be carried toward the opposite end of plate A, and thus the leaves will be successively turned as fast as the performer desires, such turning being done by the person playing the instrument, 0r by an attendant.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In an apparatus for turning the leaves of sheet-music, the combination of the oscillating arms, each provided with an adjustable sliding clamp for holding the leaves to be turned, and sliding toothed bars for giving motion to the arms, with suitable mechanism for operating them, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination ofthe plates A, the oscillatin g arms B B', the sliding` geared bars D D, the handles D D', guides E E, and stops D2 and A', the parts being arranged for joint operation substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence ot' two witnesses.
IRA MOORE.
