I CABINET COMPRISING SPACED INNER AND OUTER ENCLOSURES AND MEANS FOR CONNECTING SAME TO A BASE Filed April 30, 1945 [WWW];
INVENTOR. BY IVcY/bwz; fl/oofmfy Patented May 25, 1948 CABINET COMPRISING SPACED INNER AND OUTER ENCLOSURES AND MEANS FOR CONNECTING SAME TO ABASE William W. Montgomery, El Paso, Tex. Application April 30, 1945, Serial No. 591,188
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in cabinets. More particularly, the invention relates to a radio cabinet. As such the invention has as its principal object the provision of a transparent outer enclosure within which is arranged an opaque enclosure and in which the opaque enclosure may be of any suitable color or combination of colors and designs, which when reflected through the transparent enclosure will present a pleasing and appealing efiect to the eye.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a radio cabinet comprising an inner and outer enclosure, with the enclosures so related with respect to each other as to allow removal thereof to permit substitution for the'inner enclosure, which inner enclosure is of a colored opaque material, designed to be reflected through the outer enclosure which is preferably of transparent material.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a radio cabinet having an inner and outer enclosure connected together by a means which, by a simple operation, may be removed to permit removal of the inner and outer enclosures.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings showing the preferred form of construction, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a radio cabinet embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a cross sectional detail view of the same;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional detail View showing the manner of connecting the inner and outer enclosures of the cabinet together; and i Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a radio cabinet of a design different from that ShOWn in Fig. 1 and with which my invention may be associated.
Referring more particularly to the drawings in which the preferred form of construction of my invention is illustrated and by which the several objects of the invention are accomplished, a radio cabinet is indicated at ID. This cabinet includes the usual speaker opening H and a dialviewing opening I 2, preferably formed in the front wall l3 thereof or in such other place in the cabinet as will best serve the purpose. Within the radio cabinet I is a mounting base l4 upon which the radio apparatuses I5 are mounted 2' Claims. (01. 312-7) and which apparatuses include the usual tuning and'switch dials l6. To this base I4 is detachably connected my improved radio cabinet.
This radio cabinet I ll includes an outer enclosure preferably formed as a complete unit and of transparent material and having its longitudinal edges 13 provided with an enlarged bead I9. This bead I9 is adapted to bear upon a flange 20 formed as an integral part of an inner enclosure, 2|. This flange 20 preferably sits in a recess 22 formed in the edge portion 23 of the mounting base M. This inner enclosure is preferably formed of opaque material and is of a color or combination of colors or designs so that when viewed through the transparent outer enclosure ll, a pleasing efiect will be conveyed to the eye of the observer.
Inwardly of the flange 20 is a horizontal flange 24 provided by the inner enclosure 2i, and this flange 24 rests upon the top surface 25 of the mounting base I l.
The bead l9 and flange 20 are connected to the marginal edge 23 of the base M in the manner shown in Fig. 3 by a spring strip 26 which extends completely around the base I l and serves, in addition to attaching the inner and outer enclosures to the base M, as an ornamental strip.
In the drawings I have shown in Figs. 1 and 4 two forms of radio cabinet. It is to be understood that these cabinets may vary in shape and design, as the essential feature in the present invention is the provision of inner and outer enclosuires, the outer enclosure being of transparent material and the inner enclosure of an opaque material having a color or combination of colors or designs.
By constructing the radio cabinet in the manner herein-before set forth, it is manifest that by a simple operation the spring strip 26 may be removed and the radio enclosures 1i and 2| removed and, if desired, an inner enclosure of a different color or combination of colors or designs may be substituted for the enclosure 2|, without any change in construction or manner of attaching the enclosures to the base [4.
In employing a radio cabinet constructed in accordance with the foregoing description, it is clear that in manufacturing there may be any number of inner enclosures similar to 2|, each varying in color or combination of colors and designs, 50 that the purchaser may from time to time by simply removing the resilient attaching strip 26, change the inner enclosure so as to give the radio cabinet a different color effect. In this manner the appeal of the radio is greatly increasedand the monotonyrof having a radio 'cabia net of a uniform color is eliminated. w
While I have illustrated and described the pre- 7 ferred form of construction for carrying my in- .vention into effect, this is capable of variation 5 variations and modifications as come within 10 the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to protect by Letter f."
