Substituted for abandoned application Serial No.
560,562, October 27, 1944.
This application April 26, 1947, Serial No. 744,255 7 This invention relates to new, and useful improvements in blood circulating devices in the nature of face'and body massaging articles.
This is a substitute for my abandoned application filed on October 27, 1944, Serial Number 560,562.
More particularly, the invention proposes a new and improved blood circulating device which is characterized by a cup-like member having a hollow stem through which air may be evacuated. It is proposed to connect a rubber tube with said stem. A rubber bulb is connected with said tube and is provided with a one-way valve for discharging air when said bulb is squeezed.
It is proposed that the cup-like member be placed and moved over the surface of the face or other parts of the skin to be massaged. Simultaneously, the rubber bulb is compressed and allowed to expand. Then it is compressed and al-' lowed to expand again, and this operation is continued as the cup-like member is moved along the skin.
The invention proposes modifications in which the cup-like members are of different shapes or designs, and in which an air bleed element is associated with each rubber bulb and is connected with means by which it may be rapidly opened and closed for setting up air vibrations within each cup-like member to facilitate blood circulation.
Another object of the invention is the construction of, a device as mentioned which is simple and durable and which may be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. l is a side elevational view of a face massaging and blood circulating device constructed in accordance'with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary enlarged sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a transverse enlarged sectional view of another portion of Fig. 1 at an area where the bulb connects with the rubber tube.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary enlarged sectional view taken on the line 44 of Fig. 1.
Fig, 5 is a fragmentary enlarged sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 61s a side elevational view of a blood cir- 3 Claims. (Cl. 128-40) culating device constructed in accordance with another form of this invention.
Fig. 7 is an enlarged vertical sectional view through the rubber bulb illustrated in Fig. 6,
Fig. 8 is a fragmentary enlarged horizontal sectional view taken on the line 8-8 of Fig. '7.
Figs. 9 and 10 are side elevational views of other modified face massaging devices constructed in accordance with this invention.
The face massaging and blood circulating device, as illustrated in Figs. 1-5 inclusive, includes a cup-like member ID having a hollow stem ll through which its air may be evacuated. This member In is formed of glass or thermo-plastic material. The stem II has its rear end l2 bent at right angles. A rubber tube I3 is engaged on the rear end l2 of the stem II. A rubber bulb I4 is coupled to the rear end of the rubber tube l3. More particularly, the rubber bulb I4 is mounted upon a metal or other bushing l5 having an externally threaded section Hi. This bushing I 5 also has a stem portion l I upon which the end of th tube 13' is forced. An annular member I8 is rotatively mounted on the end of the tube I3 and is held in a rotative position by and between several collars l9 and 20. This annular member I8 has a pair of fingers 2| provided with threads threadedly engaging the threads'lfi.
The bulb M has an annular net member 22 mounted around its central portion for engagement by the fingers when the bulb I4 is squeezed. The bulb I4 is also provided with a one-way valve 23 arranged to allow the air to freely discharge from the bulb, but to automatically close and to prevent air from entering the bulb. This valve 23 is in the form of a tubular casing 24 set into an opening 25 formed in the end of the bulb l4.
A sheet-like flexible washer 26, preferably of rubber is mounted in the casing 24 and has a central passage 21 for the air, A rigid washer 28 is mounted against the inner face of the washer 26 and is provided with air passages 29 ofiset from the air passage 21. When the bulb I4 is squeezed the air will be forced through the passages 29, the flexible washer 26 will expand upwards and the air will escape through the passage 21. Air can not flow inwards of the valve, because the flexible washer 26 will engage against and close the openings 29.
The operation of the blood circulating device is as follows:
With one hand the cup-like member I 0 is' 2,4&1,868
3 saged. With the other hand the masseur squeezes the bulb l4 and allows the bulb M to expand. The suction created in the cup II] will lift the flesh and breaking the suction will drop the flesh, and then continued operation will lift the flesh-and drop'the flesh, as the cup is moved.
along the: body and as the suction Within the cup is made and broken. This circulates the blood in the vicinity.
In Figs. 6-8 a modified form of the invention is shown which is very similar to theiprior: form;
distinguishing in the fact that the cup-like mem ber 30 is of square shape in transverse crossseotion. It is provided with a tubular stem 31'. The bulb M has its one Way valveoff'setitoone side:
A tubular casing 32 is mounted'at the top of thebulb M. This tubular casing has several air out In other respects this form of the invention is similar to that previously shown and like reference numerals identify like parts in each of the several views.
While I have illustrated and described the preferredembodiments of my. invention, it is to be understood that I' do not limit myselrt'o the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is-reserved to all changes and modifications combodjr, comprisingacup-like member having a let passages 33. A rotating valves l controls the i passages 33. This rotating valve 34 is turned by a stem 35 which is provided with a spur gear 36 meshing with a rack 31 mounted diametrically through and on the'ihteri'oriaceo'f the wallof the bulb Ill. The1rack3'l isslidably mounted in a tubular member 37' which is supported onan opposectpointoi: the Wall"Ofthe-I JHIb 1 i; A spring 38 within the tubular member 38 normally urges the rack 31 outwards. A- bearing strip at is mounted around the tubular member 38 and forms a: bearing for the stem 35 so that thegear 35"is rotatively'supported.
In other respects this formof'the invention is similar to that previously shown andlike reference'numer als identify like parts in eachiof the several views;
The operation of this form'of the invention is similai' 'to the first form in that the cup- 3i?" is moved along ones body, while the bulb is is pressedandallowedto expand, and then pressedagain. However, it di'stinguishesin' the fact that when the'bulb i4 is compressed, the air willdischarge through the one way valve which controls the'passagefi. When the bulb l i is compressed the rack: 31- will be forced into the casing ta'which drives the' stem 35 for turning the'rotary valve 3'4in one'direction; When the bulb t l -is released it automaticallyexpands. The spring 3,9assists the expansion of the bulb and" furthermore forccstlierackfiloutwards. This motion drives the stei'rr 35 which drives theuotary valve 33. The rotary valve 3&3 will" rapidly open and close theair passages 39; Momentum of'the stemlwill maintain rotation While the valve 3 3 passes closed spots in the casing 32; so tha't there is a steplike entrance of air into the bulb is: Thisvibrates or oscillatestheair'containe'd inlthecuplike member 30'; Thevacuum will'be broken in' ing within the scope of the invention as defined inthe appended'claims. 7
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as. new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent, is:
1. Apparatus for massaging portions of the hollow'stem through which its air may be evacuated; a rubber tube connected with said stem, and a rubber bulb connected with said tube having alone-Way valve fordischarging air when said bulb is squeezed, an air bleed element for" said rubber bulb,rand. means for rapidly opening and closing saidair bleed element for setting up: air vibrations within said cup-like'member;
